22 Carnival Cruise Passengers Robbed in Puerto Vallarta

The first report says a lone gunman robbed some people on a trail. The second report makes it sound as though people were robbed on a trail AND late more people were robbed on a bus coming back from a trail.

I'll bet the first account about the trail is closer to true and the second one aobut the masked gangg was the rumor central report that everyone decided must have really been what happened.

Can we get any actual facts. When I go zip lining I want to know when to be on guard.

The CBS story is just plain sloppy. They are quoting a passenger that was not on the excursion but talked to somebody else who was (second hand info). Then they quote the Mexican media reports that it was a group of people.

We did the Splendor Cruise in July 2011, It was a great cruise but the itinerary is not so good! 2 Days in Cabo is 2 too much! I love PV and will return there but not via a cruise. (The Splendor is a beautiful ship!)

It's heartbreaking to hear about the robbery, and I am happy no one was hurt! But I have to say this could happen here (California) or any other place! The economy is bad, people are moved to do bad things so they can eat and live. It's tough times.

I just cruised in Cozumel, Costa Rica, and Panama and it could have happened there too! You just don't know, but whats the other side, stay home? I will take my chances and still travel. :o

So they got robbed on a hiking trail and NOT on a bus? I just want facts, I hate rumors.

While I certainly would not want to experience either, a single guy on a trail with a gun is a lot less menacing than a group blocking and robbing an entire tour bus using automatic weapons as was originally reported.

Im sure the Morning news shows will be doing interviews with the passengers.

As long as it is the actualy one on the tour,,not the "I heard from Miss x who knew Mr y who was told my Mrs z that blah blah",,I want to hear from one of the 22. And Carnival should release a real statement too.

So to anyone that has been there,,is the Los Veranos canpy tour in a different area then the Nogalito one? I would be willing to change locations if they are in fact different.

Unreal that CBS actually reported facts based on speaking to a passenger that got their info from somebody else. So sloppy!

I think the only way we are going to get the "true" facts is if we're lucky and one of the 22 robbed are CC members and they come and post here.

An watch,,someone that was on that cruise will post a review and it will either be the best cruise ever,,or the cruise was great but the food stunk,,or chogs or smoking. But will note nothing aobut this.

Somebody already posted on here because they got off the ship and knew absolutely nothing until the reports started asking questions this morning.

My itinerary already has 2 days in Cabo. What are they going to do now? Take out PV and make it a 3 day cruise to Cabo?! I hope not.

Btw, we live in a very affluent part of South Orange County, CA. DH's store was just robbed at gunpoint last night around 8pm. Bad stuff happens everywhere.

My daughter and SIL have vacationed in Cabo twice. The last time they were there, they asked their taxi driver about the Drug Cartels and if Cabo was safe. He replied that, yes, it was safe, and that the Drug Cartels ONLY had their storehouses in Cabo

I don't agree with you. Times have changed, for sure. We recently were on a Med Cruise. Our shore excursion in Tangier, Morocco had several layers of safety. We had an undercover guy riding shotgun on our tour bus. Morocco also has numerous military/police checkpoints on their highways, and when on the walking portion of our tour, our guide was in the front and a local guide was hired from the area (Tetuoan) to stay in the rear and to keep his eyes open. I also noticed another individual who traveled along with our group a bit on the "outside". He seemed to be a security lookout. I felt completely safe there!

Even on our ship's shore excursion to Cairo, we had an armed guard on the bus and security to escort our convoy of buses. When the buses were stopped, armed security were there to guard them. And at the Giza Pyramids there were Egyptian police who intervened if the the vendors became too aggressive.

Sorry, if security had been appropriate, this would not have happened. It is far different and more serious event for robbers to have the ability to stop and rob an entire busload of tourists on a planned excursion. This should not have happened. If the cruise lines continue with these sorts of trips, they will have to provide the proper security and Mexico will need to work with the cruise lines or say bye bye to their cruise tourism.

I am sure that nothing "official" was said to the passengers. When we were on Liberty in 2007, nothing was said about the incident in Costa Rica. We heard about it from other passengers who knew the people on the tour. And then, on the last sea day, we saw a story about it on the ABC morning news. That was just plain weird, watching a story about our cruise while we were still on the cruise.

The thing is that I am a traveler and I see people over-reacting to Mexico and I don't get it. They have some kind of false sense of security in the Caribbean ports where they actually have a similar or greater risk of something happening to them.

I agree, there are a lot of posters on this board who have their heads in the sand if they think that Jaimaica and some of the other Caribbean ports are much safer. I guess all it takes is turqoise waters and some lush foliage to put people at ease....

That being said, the chances of this type of thing happening to you on a cruise (much like the norovirus or going overboard) are remote given the thousands of cruises that go off without incident. But leave it to the media to sensationalize things:cool:

It can happen anywhere. We stayed at an AI in Jamaica for 10 days a few years ago and I'll never go back there, way too scarey, guys at the golf course with machetes, swinging them towards us, fires of used tires in the roads protesting various things and stopping our van, etc, etc....Never had anything like that happen in Mexico!

Gracias!:D

I understand the worry, I'm just trying to get others to understand, tourist areas are safe and please, please, please, keep coming.:D

Tourist areas are safe? If so, then why don't they rob each other? That was not even close to a thoughtful comment. Tourists have things of value.

I'm sorry, Mexico is not a safe place to be at this point in time and Carnival should realize this and react accordingly and keep all the robbery onboard like it's supposed to be.

Just to add to the confusion

This article says they were on the bus

Also is this tour normally done in the morning or is the mayor CYA??

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/02/hooded-gunmen-robbed-carnival-splendor-cruise-guests-on-bus-in-mexico.html

The gunmen boarded the bus about 5 p.m. on Thursday and took cameras, money, watches and other valuable items, according to the newspapers El Norte and La Jornada. The gunmen then fled toward the hilly countryside. None of the guests were hurt, and all made it safely back to the cruise liner, Carnival said in a statement.

Local authorities criticized the tour operator for failing to follow recommended security procedures, and Puerto Vallarta Mayor Salvador Gonzalez Resendiz said these kinds of tours in the countryside are supposed to be conducted only in the morning. The mayor said a security guard or police officer should accompany the tours.

I would certainly be interested in your sources for this comment so I can plan my vacation accordingly.

It looks like you're reading this thread. The links for this happening in St Kitts, Naussau etc are already posted on here, so I won't do it again, but, yes, it has happened before in the Caribbean.

My guess is the bus is the correct answer,,and the specualtion will alwyas be,,is the driver in cahoots. Unless one of the "SPLENDOR 22" comes forward,,we can guess all night long.

If one of these news outlets reporting the story had a real witness we would know the truth.

I know something similar has happened on St. Lucia while the tour was at the waterfall area of the botanical gradens. I remember because we were at the same spot about a week prior to the robbery.I'm awful with dates but this occured about 3 or 4 years ago.

Our last trip to St. Lucia our tour driver was an off duty police officer. He told us that several of the tour operators hire police as driver because it deters crime.
