Thomson Majesty

Recommended Posts

OK, we have this alleged additional ship for the Thomson fleet.

So what is wrong with it and can it be fixed? Or will the corporate bean counters conspire to spoil the ship for the sake of 2 ha'porths of tar

My take is

2000 new high quality mattresses

new pillows

new bed linen including valences

new towels

new shower curtains

A deep, deep, DEEP clean.

Thomson ways of doing things instead of Louis

A complete crew re-train, they will have bad habits.

Working aircon and plumbing

If Tui spent 30 million euros on Mein Schiff I think half that on Majesty would be reasonable.

Ooops, am i seeing flying pigs.

Reviews of Louis Majesty aren't very good, with most complaining of tiny cabins, small buffet restaurant and air-conditioning problems. I think really they should have saved there money on the charter of this ship and waited and then went for a slightly better ship. Considering most of the other ships are ex-HAL, I would have thought the next step-up from Dream (think it's Statendam fleet) would have been better. Holland America probably though don't want to sell or lease them yet.

If they spent just that little bit more money on their ships by upgrading their existing fleet I think their operation could be near perfect. As there recent awards have said, they have excellent service, entertainment and itineraries. Or they need now is to have a fleet to match.

According to ships monthly in Aprils edition thomson cruises may acquire the Pacific Sun currently being run by P&O oz, supposed to be selling it on next year?

Louis Majesty

As you sail between ports, take advantage of the Louis Majesty's seemingly endless list of leisure facilities including two swimming pools, two hot tubs, a sun deck, fitness center, spa and sauna, theater and more. Try your luck at the Monte Carlo casino, dance the night away at the disco, or reflect on your travels as you watch the sunset from the Observatory lounge

If you've taken a few cruises before, you may be accustomed to large, luxurious ships appointed with every possible amenity. Ships (including those of Louis Cruise Lines) are generally smaller and more agile, better suited for navigating the shallow waters and small ports of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. These mid-sized ships are practical, comfortable, and equipped with all necessary modern conveniences. But they may offer more basic cabin amenities, less on-board entertainment, and fewer dining options than larger ocean liners. Some meals may feature buffet style service and limited a la carte selections. Think of these ships as good 3-star hotels providing convenient and comfortable transport

There was rumours regarding this earlier this year from another website. Apparantely though the ships been sold to a Chinese company. Did the article say anything else or mention the possibility of any other ships?

I read that report, I can't recall any mention of any other possible ships, shame i'd rather have pacific sun than majesty.

Think I'd agree with you there. Even though Pacific Sun seems to not come without its problems, in terms of the overall decor of the ship and especially sizes of cabins, it does seem like the better option. I just read on another site (can't find it though now) that apparantely whoever they have sold it too won't be operating it until summer 2013, which may mean it could be sailing for Thomson. Also, when cruiseman put the itineraries up for next year, there was the obvious omission of Thomson Destiny and Island Escape itineraries. Could it be because they're still finalising a deal for a replacement?

With the (kind of) confirmation now of Louis Majesty, I would have thought though that that would be it for next year in terms of ship changes. I suppose in terms of the business, it kind of made sense to go for the Majesty as they already have deals with Louis Cruises and have done for many years. Lets just hope that they manage to improve the ship a bit as the itineraries on it for next year look really good!

My OH looked on facebook for Ross Roberts (Ross is booked to go again) and he is saying its the farewell tour this year for Island Escape.

Just had a look for him and read that too. Does seem to be suggesting that that's it for Island Escape this year. Although it's booked in for next summer, I'm guessing Thomson Destiny's going to replace it's itineraries.

Since the merger of Thomson and First Choice I think they've always been trying to get rid of the Island Cruises brand. I think when they had to get rid of Island Escape's itineraries last winter because of lack of demand, I think that kind of sealed its fate. It's a shame as I remember when you had Thomson, Island and Ocean Village operating from Palma, all offering affordable, informal cruises. Now we're left with one. I suppose they want to put their money on strengthening the Thomson brand instead.

I also read on another thread that the majesty isn't going to be a bare boat charter unlike the others Thomson have, that got me thinking is the deal for majesty only a short term one, and possibly they are sorting out a deal for a different ship on a long term bare boat charter deal?

Thought that too when the basis of the charter were mentioned. It seems that Thomson Destiny is replacing Island Escape's itineraries, which means for now they need Majesty to replace Destiny's itineraries. If it was say only a year charter, that would mean Majesty, Spirit and Destiny's charter would all run out in 2014 - all being chartered from Louis Cruises. If they are looking at purchasing newer ships, perhaps they'll move away from doing charters from Louis, as they seem to get a lot more freedom with charters from other companies. If they were in an article stating that they want to 'modernise their fleet', then surely they are looking at some interesting future plans. Majesty doesn't really fit into the 'modernising' plan.

I still think that Holland America's Statendam fleet would be perfect for them. Like Dream and Celebration, they're ex-HAL, are only slightly larger than the Dream but have more balcony cabins, two-storey restaurant and overall a more modern feeling to them.

2014 seems to be about right. Is it just a coincidence that the new TUI ships are due in 2014 leaving the existing ones looking for a crew and passengers.

I wonder?

In some ways I hope so as Mein Schiff 1 & 2 are great ships! However, been looking at some prices on their website and it does work out considerably more than what Thomson charge on a similar itinerary. I suppose the better the ships are, the more they'll charge. When they purchased Thomson Dream I remember the director saying that as this is a better and larger ship, people would be willing to pay more for it, so they increased the prices on these itineraries. Perhaps it might be better then to stick with something else.

I think the Island Escape will go independent ;)

Possibly. Perhaps without TUI or Thomson involved they'll do better, as they have always seem to concentrate their efforts on the Thomson Cruises operation instead of Island. One down-side they'll have though is no in-house airline.

Take your pick of Cruise liners for sale

Plenty of well know ships in this list ;)

Island Escape $65m

Thomson majesty $135m

Costa Allegra? $45m Sold, it looks like the Allegra, unless she has a sister ship.

Just to name a few :D

Think that's Costa Marina, but also says that her sister is available too.

How about The Calypso or The Emerald?

Four Seasons - 116 seats

Seven Seas - 294 seats plus captains table

Le bistro -120 seats

Cafe Royal buffet - 64 seats, 64 seats

Looks a bit tight to me.

The ship was designed for freestyle casual cruising and in NCL days they converted the Royal Observatory in the evenings into a Trattoria and served snacks in the bars and casino.

So if they continue with formal night how the heck are they going to fit everyone into 2 sittings

732 cabins at double occupancy equals 1464 passengers so with 2 sittings on formal night 644 cruisers are not going to get any din dins :D

I heard the Costa Allegra was going to be scrapped now. Initially thought it would become a Thomson Ship!

Replacing the Island Escape ... replacing like for like??? Ex container ship for an Ex Car Ferry :D

Will edit that :D

The 1,000-passenger Costa Allegra will not return to service after a fire broke out and stranded the ship in the Indian Ocean earlier this month.

On Carnival Corporate earnings conference call this morning it was said that cost of repairs far exceed the value of the ship and that they’ve had the ship for sale for some time.

Earlier this week it was announced that the 927-passenger Costa Voyager will replace the Costa Allegra’s itinerary, canceling Voyager’s Red Sea itineraries.
