The origin of the term lies with Dorothy Parker, long before a 1939 adaptation of a movie.

 

Sorry I disagree. This is an essay and as such is someones opinion. It is no more reliable than Wikipedia - in fact the author himself indicates "Let me give you a perspective on how I see it......", "this is my personal understanding", and "I am fairly confident".

 

Interesting for sure but no more valid than any number of other 'theories.'
