Rare LHT28 Posted March 18, 2015 #52 Share Posted March 18, 2015 Yes, start bidding now. I always start bidding about 5 months before my expected arrival dates. If you are looking for a hotel convenient to Centraal Station (for train to Schipol), then I would concentrate on only zone #3. Have you seen the new zone designations?? Zone 3 is across the river the new zone is #15 or #6 for near Centraal Station
dogs4fun Posted March 18, 2015 #53 Share Posted March 18, 2015 Have you seen the new zone designations??Zone 3 is across the river the new zone is #15 or #6 for near Centraal Station Thanks for the catch LHT! I just reread my previous post and you are absolutely correct! I meant to write choice #3 (Royal Palace - Central Station - Dam Square) , not zone #3. Zone #15 is the zone that the OP wants for Royal Palaca - Central Station - Dam Square
Ine Posted March 18, 2015 #54 Share Posted March 18, 2015 Thanks a lot for the tips dogs4fun. Am kind of diffident about this, concerned I'll get something which doesn't suit us. I just booked a Hotwire ED for a Saturday in August and got the Okura at $129. The hotel is said to be good and the price too I think, especially since for the Sail AMS weekend, but we have an early flight out the next morning and the hotel location isn't very convenient for the bus/train to Schipol. How far ahead do I need to start bidding for June, we'll be there 9th-11th. I have been following the long threads on Trip Advisor, but need to look up Betterbidding also before getting started. Thanks again, really appreciate it:) Since you are in Amsterdam during Sail the location of Okura is fine. You will be in the southern part of the city, away from the crowd. In case you want to go the centre or Sail it is a simple tramride away. Re going to the airport, the station Amsterdam Rai station with frequent trains to Schiphol is very close and not that busy as Centraal station. For traindetails check: http://www.ns.nl/en/travellers/home Also the airport is closer to your hotel then hotels in the centre.

Thanks all, will get started reading up Betterbidding tips and try my luck. I have 3 rooms at the Brouwer as a stand-by, 126 euros/night with breakfast, which I think is not bad at all. That's why I was in two minds about trying NYOP. Ine, I also told myself that the Okura was probably ok during Sail AMS. Thanks for the link to trains to Schipol, will check it out. Was also thinking of trying Tinker. BTW, will they pick me up from the cruise terminal, not the regular one but the container terminal away from the city? Thanks again:)

I am sure regular cabs will available, but in case you want to prebook or check rates: http://www.tcataxi.nl/en/home.html or http://www.taxielectric.nl/en/ Recently Uber started but there are some problems with the regulars cabdrivers. https://www.uber.com/nl/cities/amsterdam Edited March 19, 2015 by Ine

The Brouwer has an elevator, albeit a small one, so carrying our bags to our rooms won't be a problem. I donot think so, as far as I know tinker only does to and from the airport. nojoke Posted March 19, 2015 #59 Share Posted March 19, 2015 I did not know you could bid on the Express deals or are you saying you just checked the hotels then did the NYOP? Sorry to mislead you. I looked up the Express Deal for 4* Museum area. It showed the price of $140 which was 24% savings--so I figured the original price must be about $180. Then I noted that the customer rating was 9+. I then went to the standard priced hotels and looking through all the 4* Museum area hotels saw that the Park Hotel was the only one that fit that criteria. There were others with 9+ ratings, but not the correct price. I was afraid to actually bid for fear of getting a hotel I didn’t want. I had originally wanted to stay in the Central Station/Palace area--but, the hotels’ ratings discouraged me. It’s a bit time-consuming, but also fun getting the “one” you want or maybe even better (hopefully not worse!). Good luck!

Ok got it now I usually watch the better bidding site then bid the same rate for the zone I want usually a 4 or 5* it has worked both times for Amsterdam Got the hotel I wanted If I am not sure about it I just book direct with the hotel sometimes surprises are not good :D Lyn
zoicca Posted July 15, 2015 #61 Share Posted July 15, 2015 I used Priceline for an Amsterdam hotel in April. I ended up with a hotel behind the main train station, about a 15 minute walk, but they had a shuttle. I kind of felt like I was in no-mans-land. Too far and inconvenient to just go for a quick stroll. The hotel was superb, however. Just the location wasn't great. So, I highly recommend avoiding that area if you can. This might help. It's a list of known Priceline hotels in Amsterdam. http://www.hoteldealsrevealed.com/hotelinventory/priceline/netherlands/amsterdam Remember to bid low and work your way up.
