Tips for luggage porters

Recommended Posts

It seems to vary by port. In Miami, we handed the porter $10 for our 4 bags. He told us with a straight face that "the standard rate is $10 per bag. You know sometimes things happen to bags destined for ships."

Felt very much like extortion to me. I wondered what would have happened had we just walked away? Sunken suitcases, loaded on the wrong ship, what?

I would have taken his name and made a few phone calls when I returned home. That is total BS on the porters part.

Thanks for the advice about tipping. Took the Jewel of the Seas from Harwich and when we got into the car park we had to load our cases onto a trolley with all the other cases and then catch the shuttle bus to embarkation. We did not see our cases again until we found them outside our cabin door. In Majorca we just left our cases with all the others on the dock and they turned up outside our door. We are sailing on the Freedom from Fort Lauderdale in December, will someone actually come and take our bags from us? There will be 5 of us so how much should we tip? We Brits are not used to tipping.
