Southampton pub recommendation??

Following the discussion elsewhere here regarding a good pub in Windsor - I am reminded that we will have a need for a "good pub" in Southampton in a few weeks time.

All the usual requirements - like good local ambience, character of the building, good pub grub - both lunch and dinner, and good ales :) can be either close to Southampton docks or further away outside the main urban area.

Thanks for any thoughts

Hi Barry,

Close to the docks consider:

http://theredlionsouthampton.com/

www.platformtavern.com/

http://www.thegrapessouthampton.co.uk/

Avoid any pubs which mention a student clientele

Country pubs (needs a car)

Here's a selection, there's plenty of others which don't have websites/photos which makes them kinda difficult to recommend.

http://www.theoldforgeotterbourne.co.uk/ - a favourite of ours

http://www.vintageinn.co.uk/thefisherspondeastleigh/ - another favourite, esp eating outside by the pond

http://www.highcornerinn.co.uk/home.php - deep in the New Forest

http://jollysailoroldbursledon.co.uk/ - lovely spot overlooking yachting river, difficult parking weekends

http://www.vintageinn.co.uk/thetitchfieldmillfareham/ - inside or out.

http://the-ship-inn-owslebury.co.uk/ - very traditional village pub

Well, JB...

Duke of Wellington looked interesting, and then I read "...roaring log fire..."...since we will be in Southampton July 5th through the 7th this year, I am guessing a roaring log fire won't be an attraction for us!! icon7.gif

We are likely turning back the hire car when we get there, so keeping it to walking distance from the Holiday Inn, I am wondering if any of these for might be a good choice for dinner one of our nights? Any decent Fish 'n' Chips? (My wife loves Fish ' n' Chips) ...Last visit, we just had some at Harry Ramsden's in the Mall...seems like a pub would be a little more enjoyable ambiance...

Well, Steve, there's a Harry Ramsden's not ten minutes from H.I., in the West Quays Mall. But it's not quite olde-worlde :D

I don't go in for fish-n-chips restaurants, they're best eaten out of paper sat in the park.

But it's all very old-hat these days, the country is awash with kebab & pizza joints, KFCs, BKs & MaccyD's :(

We don't live or drink in town, we usually head for local watering holes in the countryside & I'm quite a connoisseur of their sunday lunches, but I'm no expert on Southampton pubs.

JB :)
