Hello all

We will be on the mariner of the seas from may 28.

On june 8 we will be in Napels docking at 07.00 am. We want to go by train to Pompeii and afterwards via Sorrento to Capri by fast ferry.

After Capri by fast ferry back to Napels. Our ship will depart at 18.30 pm.

Can we do this intinary on one trip or is this to much considering time ?

We do not have mobility problems.

Hope to hear from people who did a intinary like this.

Thanks for your answers.

Yes, it can be done without much difficulty. Do remember to purchase your return ticket from Capri back to Naples when you arrive on Capri rather than waiting until you are ready to leave.

Your on-board time will probably be at 18:00 (6 PM), so you'll have several ferries to choose from at 4:30, 5:05 and 5:10 (I would only look at this as a fallback option and plan to be on one of the earlier ones).

We planned to catch the early train to Naples and arrive in Pompeii when they opened. You do need to release how LARGE pompeii is, it would be very easy to spend the entire day and still not see everything. We limited our time to 2.5 hours, so we would catch the train onto Sorrento. We walked a little through the town on our way down to the ferry area (I am very glad we were going down instead of up, it was quite a few stairs to get down to that area). There was a restaurant not too far from the ferry area, we grab a pizza to go, bought our ferry tickets and caught the 1pm ferry.

We did get our return tickets when we arrived, the tickets were right next to the funiclar tickets. We took the 5:10 ferry back as our ship was right next to the ferry dock, maybe 200 yards away.

It was a great day, so glad we did fit all three into the day. Great memories, enjoy your trip.

We think Euro posted good info but you might want to simply follow our personal rule of independent travel and keep flexibility in your plans. Many are surprised at how long it can take to see Pompeii (and you will not see it all) and you will have to rush Pompeii to combine it with Capri. Once you leave Pompeii you would have to allow a little time to walk over to the train station (pretty close to the ruins) and wait for the next train (every 30 min). Once you get to Sorrento you then need some time to get fromt the train station down to the ferry pier and, or course, a lot depends on how long you must wait for the next jetboat/hydrofoil. Once you are on Capri you also need to allow for the time it takes to get up to Capri Town (on the funicular). And at this point you are only just beginning to explore the island (our favorite thing is to take the chair lift from Anacapri to the top of the mountain). If Capri is crowded you will need to allow lots of extra time to get back down to Marina Grande for your boat back to Naples (there can be long lines for the funicular in mid to late afternoon). Bottom line is you can do it...but you will be rushed on Capri and probably not have much time to do more then walk around Capri Town. You might also want to keep in mind that none of this is real cheap since the boat from Sorrento to Capri is about 15 Euros and then its another 17 Euros (might be more now) back to Naples.

In regard to the prior post about taking the 5:10 ferry (back to Naples) our forty+ years of independent travel have taught us not to cut things that close. Ferries have been known to be delayed, break down, get delayed if seas are a bit high, etc. Most of the time you can set your watch by the jetboat/hydrofoil schedules....but there are exceptions. If you do take a late boat always have a "Plan B" which is how to catch-up to your ship the next port :)

In my opinion seeing both Pompei and Capri in one day is too much. Both places can easily take a full day to fully appreciate. It depends on your travel style I guess but I look for quality over quantity. Weather or rough seas could also be factors so make sure you have a plan B.
