Dumb question- Mobile phone & Library books

I know mobile phones don't work out to sea, but why don't they?

--Enquiring minds want to know ...and I know, I know, its a dumb question --- but I just have to ask.

Also, are at least some of the books in the QM2 library not maritime, ship related

I need a couple hours of Elizabeth George, Harlan Coben, Val McDermin, James Patterson .before going to sleep... and have to know if I should pick up a couple pocket books before getting on board.

Re non-maritime books. On the maiden crossing I was browsing the library and came across the most unusual book. The sort of book that everyone must have access to while on holiday. A workshop manual for a Land Rover! What it was doing there, I have no idea.

Regards, Colin.

Yvonne,

You will find a wonderful variety of books in the library on the QM2. It is an excellent place to spend some time during your sea days. It was usually busy during our visits. Hopefully you will find many books that will be of interest.

Thanks much on the book responses ...

As to the phones - its a bit much for me to think of cell phones working from any two points in the worlds, over water, from the skies, but then add something like a little ship on a little ocean and it won't

Never heard about a satellite phone... hmmm that m ight be interesting to look up

Thanks folks

Two types of satellite phones were offered for rental in a thick Cunard voyage document that I received a few weeks before our crossing. In my opinion, the email options are much better and cheaper if you absolutely need to stay in touch. I used both the in-cabin TV email for $1.50 per message (to multiple recipients) and the internet email services offered at the various computer centers onboard. The services worked fine and seemed to be very reliable.

I just remembered this! In the Cunard Voyage Information booklet that was sent precruise, there is an advertisement for Satellite Phones. The company is Global Phoneworks and they offer satellite and global cell phones. On a transatlantic voyage you would need the satellite phone. The contact information is 1-800-556-0530 or http://www.globalphoneworks.com/cunard. There is an order form on the back of the advertisement. I'm sure there are other companies that offer this service, also.

My husband has to be available for his elderly clients (most don't use email), court cases, etc. Or, as he reminds me, no clients - no vacations! In case anyone needs one in Europe, we're getting a free phone (we pay shipping round trip to our house in US and minutes used) from Auto Europe which is our rental car company in France for 2 weeks later this month.
