What to wear in steam room/sauna

If you are wearing a bath sheet then you are covered and not nude anymore than someone in a bathing suit. So you are wearing what you want and being discrete. It's nice that you are being considerate of others. That is a characteristic lacking in others in our society.

So if I am nude then how close to your face can I stand before you start to feel uncomfortable  or is there some international distance in the steam room? After all, according to your way of thinking I have the right to do what I want. If you don't like it then that would be your problem and you can feel free to leave.

Covering yourself with a towel or bathing suit in these circumstances is not about right or wrong. It's about being considerate. As I said, "it's about courtesy and having respect for others."

Cheers!

What does being nude in a steam room have to do with respect for others?!! We have way too many hang ups in America about nudity! JMHO!!

To me it depends upon which steam room you are talking about. If you are referring to the ones in the mens/women's locker rooms it should not matter at all. For the ships with the Cloud 9 Spas there are coed steam rooms and it should matter in those. You should have all the pertinent parts covered in them be it by swimsuit, towel or whatever you choose to do that with. We are talking ships that sail from the USA, in Europe and other countries it is acceptable but not here just like nude beaches are common in other countries but not here.

And I agree with this. Still don't get the American hang up with nudity and I'm not a nudist!!

It is a single sex locker room with a steam room and/or sauna. What is the concern over how someone is dressed? Like it or not, you have to get nude to use a shower. Next thing someone will complain that you'll need to wear your bathing suit in the shower - or that you can't be nude when you are changing into your fresh clothes at your locker. Where does the madness end? So much concern over nudity.

I posted the question on John Heald's FB page asking if there was a dress code in the steam/sauna rooms or if nudity was allowed. He answered back that there is no nudity allowed in any of the steam/sauna rooms. Zydeco Cruiser also posted this link to a photo that he took of a sign. http://www.zydecocruiser.net/CarnivalInspiration/01LongBeach/1-20-2014-1/DSC_0882_Zyde.jpg

In this instance, it has nothing to do with respect for others, it has to do with respect for the rules. If a non smoker walks into the Casino, should every smoker put out their cigarette out of respect for the non-smoker even though the rules state it is okay to smoke there? If the rules say it is okay for a 400 pound guy (or girl) to wear a speedo (g-string), should they not out of respect for the one person who doesn't like to look at rolls of fat? If the rules say it is okay to be nude in the sauna should everyone who wants to go nude not out of respect for the possible one person who doesn't like it? No, they should not. If the rules bothers someone, they do not have to use that facility, whatever it may be. Everyone else does not have to go out of their way to try and make 1 person that they will likely never see again feel comfortable.

While the ship may sail from the US, it has many passengers who are not American and do not share your views. You have to see what the rules for the coed steam room are and then decide if they are acceptable for you.

"Wear suitable attire" does not mean you can't go in with just a towel. What is suitable to you may be completely different on what is suitable to me. Of course, it would be nice if carnival would stop being so wishy washy and just post what they expect instead of trying to be so PC about everything. If they don't want nudity, simply say "A bathing suit is required" or "Nudity is not allowed" or something to that effect.

In my post above yours I posted both John Heald's answer to my question and a photo of a sign from one of the ship's spas. The rules are no nudity is allowed in any of the steam rooms/saunas so it really doesn't matter if there are passengers who are from other countries who may have different views than mine.

I am not sure why you are posting this in reference to my post as I said earlier it doesn't matter to me if you are wearing a towel, swimsuit or a clown suit as long as things that I don't care to see are properly covered. I guess they don't want to come out and say it in clear terms and would rather rely on Suitable to be understood as that.

The sign needs to say "no nudity is allowed" if that is what they want. It says "Wear suitable attire". Suitable to whom? Me, you, John Heald, the Captain of the ship, my wife? John Heald, while I like him very much, has stated many things incorrectly in the past and do not believe his word is law. If they want no nudity, they need to post "no nudity". It's that simple.

Respect - to show consideration for: avoid intruding upon or interfering with other's privacy. Consideration; courteous regard (to have respect for the feelings of others). Websters

Anything there that gives you a clue?

So if I am nude then how close to your face can I stand before you start to feel uncomfortable  or do you have a hang up about this? (Out to Sea! had a funny response to that. Good to see someone with a sense of humor)

Do you also have a hang up about extending courtesy to others?

Covering yourself with a towel or bathing suit in these circumstances is not about right or wrong. It's about being considerate. As I said, "it's about courtesy and having respect for others."

For what it's worth - I don't have a problem with being nude in a steam room. I just think there are more appropriote places than on a cruise ship. Wearing a towel or bathing suit in a public venue like on a cruise ship will not spoil the steam room experience for me.

Cheers!

The purpose and goal of a steam room / sauna is to relax and sweat. But who wants to sit in their own sweat? Thus, the standard is to be nude and sit on a towel. However, nudity is not allowed in coed spaces, and so the ships often make a vague statement like swimwear required, or appropriate attire required. It's vague on purpose, to accommodate all people. So in a coed steam area I prefer wearing a thong swimsuit since it provides the required coverage, but is also minimal so you are not sitting in and wearing your own sweat.

So glad to see this 8 year old post being revived. Different cultures have different attitudes about sauna bathing.

On Carnival ships clothing is required.

Nope not correct. In a single sex steam or sauna you DO NOT NEED TO WEAR A BATHING SUIT. Period.

This thread is a great reminder to avoid the sauna. I see enough semi nude people strutting their glory around the pool in poorly fitted swimsuits. I certainly do not want to see all their glory in the sauna up close.

My wife goes in with a bathing suit and she says some women are naked.  Same with the men's side.  I go in with a bathing suit and some men are naked.

Which is how it should be. If you want to wear a bathing suit, go ahead. If you don't, just use a towel.
