your very own ship .

Recommended Posts

Reading through the posts I have read that people would like to convert sports decks into sun decks and in one post it read ...

..." Deepsix i really liked the Spirit as well and in my view if Dream had a bar like Horizons it would be hard to beat."

Which got me thinking if you could take parts off any of the Thomson ships to make up a new one ,what would you put on it and tell us why ?

I have only done the Destiny up to now,so have little to compare to but given the chance if we were building " MV Thomson Forum " our very own ship ,then I would like to see the return of the Destiny Sky Bar as I used to love spending a few hours up there sipping a drink and seeing places like Madeira lit up at night.

Some of you have done most of the Thomson ships and I am sure will have fond memories of them . Could be the best bathroom ,bar ,cabins

or places to eat ? You may have only done a couple of ships but still I look forward to seeing what sort of ship we will all build ?:)

You never know Thomsons may read it and build it  :D:D

Great minds think alike - well at least our minds do, great or not! :D I had exactly the same thought after reading those threads too - I wonder what best features I'd put together to get the best composite Thomson ship.

So here are my thoughts (with reasons as far as possible!)

Showlounge: Dream - fixed seating means people don't move in at the 11th hour and put a seat in front of you! (Some sight-line issues but this is so in all the showlounges to an extent). Situation in the middle of the deck on Celebration and Spirit means people tend to walk through during shows to get to the Lido although they are asked not to. Majesty design affects style of shows and has lighting issues.

Games lounge; Oklahoma on Destiny - light and airy and spacious not a bit claustrophobic like High Spirits (Spirit) and Liberties (Celebration).

Pool deck: Dream (Celebration/Spirit not really a comparable pool deck - Majesty chopped up and no sun loungers, cramped)

Cinema; only Celebration and Spirit but I like the idea plus the popcorn(!) and think they could be used more - not just for films.

Viewing Bar: Horizons on Celebration/Spirit. The Sky Bar on Destiny had a fab location but lacked the performance space so no live music.

Classical musicians: Argo Lounge on Dream - with door shut it forms a discrete area unlike the Explorers on Spirit/Celebration.

Cabins; (only do basic so limited opinions here)

For spaciousness and storage: Celebration/Spirit - hope the refurb on Celebration will really improve the aesthetics - but hate the mosaic tiled en-suites - hope they've been done too!

For sound-proofing: Majesty (but not stern Deck 4)

Overall: Dream - enough space and storage and perhaps prior to refit most aesthetically pleasing - so should be even better after refurb.

Dining Room: Dream - most spacious

Speciality dining: Majesty - separate and nice location

Self-service: Sirens on Dream, Lido Celebration/Spirit (limited seating and poor flow on Majesty)

Pool bars and grills; Dream more space/choice than C/S and better flow than Majesty

Internal seating/coffee bar areas; Majesty - no real equivalent on others

Sundeck space; not an authority on this (will defer to anyone else's views!) but like the promenade deck on Dream, C/S and the sun deck spaces on the 'wings' of Dream and above the pool deck on C/S. Also the little hidden away decks at the stern (Deck 6/7?) on Dream.

Cabin corridors: Majesty - wider and moulded doors which look better.

Stability and least noise: Dream

Can't think of anything else but no doubt reading from other posters will jog my thoughts when they make their suggestions.

Looking forward to hearing others' views. ;)

Can I first say what interesting threads we have on this forum.:)

My ship would included:

The cabins from Dream, I like a double bed and a bath I can get both on here without having to massively upgrade.

The theatre from Dream, mainly because you can always find a seat.

The Sky bar from Destiny.

The self-service restaurants on Dream Spirit and Celebration are all good.

The outside layout of Spirit and Celebration, I love being able to go from the lido up around the promenade then up to the whirlpool once around the sports deck and then back down.

The Pool areas on Spirit and Celebration, this is because I prefer a quiet pool away from the music.

I would also include a cinema.

Can I have a free self service launderette as the baggage allowance is getting smaller and it is difficult to take enough for two weeks. I know people say you don't want to do washing on holiday, but on sea days you can put your washing in, go up on deck for a while and then go back and put it in the dryer - simples:D

Liking this thread! Probably everything I've said has already been mentioned. Oh well! :D Can't add anything from Majesty as not been on, but will try with the others. So here is what I think is the overall best version of the three (and a bit of Destiny).

THOMSON BLISS (thought I'd give it a name in-keeping with the rest of the fleet ;) )

CABINS: Dream's I think are definitely the best. Have the nicer décor currently, and with the refurbs, they should be really nice. The most spacious cabins out of them all. One thing I would say though that, similarly to Celebration/Spirit, is that instead of a sofa in the Standard cabins, to have a cupboard as I think that Dream's lacked a bit of drawer space. Dream's bathroom most definitely win hands down. Showers are more controllable, hate the mosaic tiles on Celebration/Spirit and I much prefer the wooden floor on Dream as it dries out quickly if it gets wet.

WAITER-SERVICE RESTAURANT: Orion Restaurant on Dream wins due to it being more spacious and the domed ceiling in the centre seems to reduce noise and make it seem like there's more space.

A LA CARTE RESTAURANT: Don't like The Grill on Dream due to it being located in a corner in Siren's. Think a separate space would be better, and then they could have Siren's open in the evening too. Don't like the location of Mistral's or Sirocco's on Celebration/Spirit either as it seems to be just placed at the back of the main restaurant and not have its separate space.

BUFFET RESTAURANT: Siren's on Dream is the best. Less queuing, nice little areas and spacious ones too. Lido on the Dream is the worst. Always seems to be long queues and you seem to be sat in a corridor-like way. Like the Lido on Celebration/Spirit though as it seems more spacious.

CASINO: Don't go in much, but prefer Hemmingway's/Raffles on Celebration/Spirit with the bar area. Not keen on Dream's as it seemed a dark area at the back of the ship that not many seem to venture to.

BARS WITH A VIEW: Can't beat Horizon's on Celebration/Spirit. Great views, has a nice nautical feeling (that I hope doesn't go when they update the ship, instead to get new furniture in-keeping with the nautical theme) - definitely the bar that Dream desperately needs.

OUTSIDE BARS: The bars on the Lido deck on the three ships is a nice space. Much prefer this area than the bar on the Siren's deck on Dream.

OTHER BARS: Like Ocean Bar on Dream and Hemmingway's/Raffles on Celebration/Spirit. Only problem with Ocean Bar is that one one side of it, it is quite noisy (that mysterious white box on Deck 9 might be causing it).

SHOPS: Dream's Broad Street seems more like proper shopping area rather than the equivalent on Celebration/Spirit. The only problem is that when the stalls are out, there isn't much room to pass through due to people looking and buying.

RECEPTION: Much prefer the Reception area on Dream as it seems more spacious and I like having the Destination Services area/Future Cruises etc. all together, although a proper Destination Services office that is currently on Deck 6 would be better near Reception.

BEAUTY SALON: Think it is better located on Celebration in the spa area, instead of being in the shopping area where it doesn't really fit properly.

SHOW LOUNGE: Dream wins hands down. Find it annoying when people start moving the chairs everywhere on Celebration/Spirit. The productions seem a lot better on Dream as they seem to have better equipment. More of a theatre type show lounge than on Celebration/Spirit.

OTHER ENTERTAINMENT VENUE: Much prefer Oklahoma Lounge on Destiny or Medusa on Dream as they are much lighter and spacious areas than Liberties/High Spirits on Celebration/Spirit. Due to Medusa Lounge being in the centre of the ship, prefer Oklahoma as it meant that nobody was walking through. Also, if you were walking through Medusa, do you go up the ramp and down again, or straight through nearer where everyone is sat? Dilemmas! :D

LOUNGES: Explorer's Lounge on Celebration/Spirit is a nice space, but doesn't seem to be used very well. Argo Lounge on Dream seemed better used, probably as the bar staff from Ocean's went in to collect drink orders, whereas Explorer's being far from the nearest bar didn't seem to get many using it.

GYM: Don't really use them much (I'm on holiday ;) ), but would say that Dream's was better equipped.

PROMENADE DECK: One of my favourite areas on the ship, and I think it is a shame that Majesty's doesn't seem to have the space for it to be used properly. Prefer Celebration/Spirit's though as on Dream, at the back, you have to walk through where everyone is sunbathing and eating, whereas on Celebration/Spirit you can walk all the way around without disturbing anyone.

POOL AREA: Lido Pool deck on Dream is definitely the best area (really a larger version of Celebration/Spirit). Like having the two pools on Dream, one at the back and one on top. Seem to work well in terms of passenger flow.

OTHER OUTSIDE AREAS: The problem with Dream's is that a lot of areas are crew only, so really you've only got the Promenade Deck and the two pool decks. Although, I like the back area where you go down the stairs from the Lido pool deck. Not very clear though at what point it become crew only as on Deck 6 it has a blue screen that seems to be a crew only space and then deck 5 has all the boat stuff (ropes and that) but it doesn't say crew only from the outside but it does on the inside door (an old Costa sign), but there's a new Thomson sign about closing the door carefully that seems to be aimed at passengers so who knows? Passengers were using it and no crew said anything.

LIFTS: Don't get me started on Dream's! :D Think they need to be taken out and completely redone. For the size of the ship and passenger numbers, I think they need more. Added lifts on Stairways A & C would be really useful instead of the three different staircases.

OVERALL LAYOUT: I think that Dream's is the easiest to get used to, and I like having the show lounge at the front as it means no one is constantly walking through. Although I do prefer Celebration/Spirit's bar layout as it means that there not all on one deck and it a bit separated. With Dream having both Broadway Show Lounge and Medusa Lounge at the front, it means that in the day especially, the back of Deck 8 seems wasted with The Water's Edge and Delo bar being completely dead. Would be better if it was like Destiny where the two main entertainment venues were at either end of the deck.

OTHER: Like the self service laundrette on Celebration/Spirit, especially useful on a 14 night cruise. Washing can become a pain on Dream, and I refuse to pay the high prices of the laundrette service. The obvious noise and vibration on Celebration/Spirit doesn't really bother me, but obviously I prefer it without so would say Dream was better on this issue. Love the cinema on Celebration/Spirit and think it could be used when certain sporting events are on. Miss not having a cinema on Dream.

Don't forget a fridge and free safe in all cabins. Free biscuits with the tea making facilities as well.

When Thomson first got Dream they intended to move the casino as it was too big. However that was shelved because it was so popular. The use varies dramatically from cruise to cruise. Like a morgue or heaving.

Dreams bars are badly positioned and the Bliss should have a sky bar with entertainment. Positioned at the front of the ship as well.

How big should Bliss be?

How about 1500 to 1800 passengers on about 60-70,000 tons?

ps, a good selection of balcony cabins as well.

PLus lots of CHAIRS on the promenade deck.

Love the name Sailaway.

Thanks very much! Thought it would fit with the rest of the fleet rather well! ;) If they ever have a ship called Thomson Bliss, I want the royalties please! :D

Agree that Thomson Bliss ( ;) ) needs more balcony cabins and every cabin should have a fridge/mini-bar, tea and coffee making facilities and a free safe in all cabins.

Thought they were going to move the casino originally and replace them with cabins. Would be interesting to see where they were actually going to move it too. I think the whole back area of Thomson Dream needs to be re-organised a bit to make the most of it. A proper bar where The Water's Edge is would be good that spilled out onto the back deck area with nice tables and chairs to sit outside.

I think they might have moved the casino into the area occupied by the teenagers video stuff. however on busy nights it is not big enough as it is. When i was on board the could not use the second roulette table because they did not have two sets of 'colours' - sheesh!. People were getting angry about not being able to play.

Back to Bliss. We do of course expect her to have diesel electric drive with no 'orrible prop shafts.

This might take the individuality out of the ship ie: The lovely shake rattle and roll of the Spirit, that vibration used to get me off to sleep nicely, likewise celebration, my main criticism with the Dream is no quiet more refine bars ooo...and no launderette. But no I have seen the link that FO are doing all inc????

Hi coolcruiser, read post about building own ship.I would love to see one of about the same size as the little CALYPSO. Our first cruise and very enjoyable as only 470 pessengers. We done the Greek Islands plus Greek ports and enjoyed all. I take your point about the sky bar on Destiny,a good evening drink place.Done CALYPSO,DESTINY,CELEBRATION AND DREAM THREE TIMES,due for MAJESTY in September, fingers crossed.Up to now DREAM top notch.

The best ship by many many miles for getting a sunbed and not being cramped is the Destiny - nothing else in the fleet I have been on comes close and the Majesty which I have not been on seems to have some issues though probably not as much as the Spirit/Celebration which are the worst I have been on for this issue.

As for entertainment lounges - the Oklahoma on the Destiny is by far the best.

As for Theatres it is the Dream followed by the Destiny.
