I have received the travel planner with a number of excursions for my trip between Istanbul and Athens.

 

Has anybody been on these excursions, recommend any in particular or where its best to 'do your own thing'.

 

I am tempted to arrange a few taxis - anybody had any experience of that in Nisos Limmos, Izmir, Cesme, Santorini or Chania?

You can do your own thing and walk in Izmir, Santorini, Limmos and Chania. I have no first hand experience in Nisos sorry.

I suppose if you want to stay in Izmir you could do your own thing and walk around. However, if you haven't been to Ephesus yet you may want to arrange for an excursion there. It is amazing.

Good point, but keep in mind that travel time from Izmir to Kusadasi/Ephesus is well over 1 hour in each direction. But Ephesus is something that people should try and see at least once.
