N7786W Flyer Posted May 23, 2005 #33 Share Posted May 23, 2005 Couldn't help but notice that the Norway departed without her tenders, Little Norway I and Little Norway II. Previously, there was some mild speculation that if the Norway couldn't get approval to open as a hotel/convention center in Malaysia that she might be returned to a "very slow" cruise service (quoting Maritime Matters, May 8th) utilizing her undamaged boilers. Are the depths of the Far Eastern ports such that she won't require her tenders or has the return to cruise service been ruled out?? I hate to be pessimistic, but we may have been given a clue to her final disposition....Port Klang or the scrapyard...

WildWillie Posted May 23, 2005 #35 Share Posted May 23, 2005 I never had the chance to sail her, but it was (and still is) a beautiful ship. While on the RCL Monarch in 2000, the captain even pointed her out, and said it was a piece of the past.

I suppose it's possible that the tenders wouldn't be needed if she's going to be a casino ship steaming in big lazy circles with no portcalls. N7786W Flyer Posted May 23, 2005 #37 Share Posted May 23, 2005 Good point....she would only need to dock at her port of embarkation/debarkation. It probably won't happen, but I would LOVE to see her returned to service...even if it is at 6-8 knots.
Druke I Posted May 23, 2005 #38 Share Posted May 23, 2005 Several wags have suggested that she might just sink while under tow (and still presumably insured). There were certainly some questions asked when Constitution sank while under tow. And there are those who still say the fire that caused the demise of Queen Elizabeth in Hong Kong Harbour was no accident.
Bennett'sCruise Posted May 23, 2005 #39 Share Posted May 23, 2005 What fabulous pix! Perhaps the new gen PoAm was "bowing" in respect to the long-serviced Grande Dame Norway. I prefer to believe that .... We never got to sail her ... does anyone have any on-board pix of her? Would love to see them! ~Dianne

N7786W Flyer Posted May 23, 2005 #41 Share Posted May 23, 2005 To some degree, you can understand that rationale. Just off the top of my head, I can think of several passenger ships that sank under tow or with only crew aboard in the recent years....Constitution, Seabreeze, Britanis, Bahama Star (my first cruise back in 1974). Makes you wonder.
Splatitudes Posted May 23, 2005 #42 Share Posted May 23, 2005 Aren't Little Norway and Norway II still in use at GSC, or was that just me?
N7786W Flyer Posted May 23, 2005 #43 Share Posted May 23, 2005 If you look in some of the pictures (on the websites linked here in this thread), you can see the tenders moored just forward of the bow of the Norway. BTW, what is GSC?

Globaliser Posted May 23, 2005 #46 Share Posted May 23, 2005 Several wags have suggested that she might just sink while under tow (and still presumably insured). There were certainly some questions asked when Constitution sank while under tow. And there are those who still say the fire that caused the demise of Queen Elizabeth in Hong Kong Harbour was no accident. I think that the speculation has been partly fuelled by the fact that the Constitution sank while being towed by this very tug, IIRC. But I don't believe it myself - if only because of the fact that the tug's tow wire was changed over the weekend. Why do that if you're simply going to dispose of the ship somewhere very deep? But maybe I'm being naive. The fire that sank the Queen Elizabeth was certainly no accident. Fires started in too many different places at such close times. I personally subscribe to the theory that the only mystery is whodunnit, and why. I still vividly remember the day that I saw her alight and smoking furiously out in the harbour, just as everyone was getting excited about her forthcoming new life. 98Charlie Posted May 23, 2005 #49 Share Posted May 23, 2005 Nanja, we thank you too. DH & I were only able to sail her once, disembarked about a month before her boiler blew. We dined with two great couples on that cruise. One of those couples has remained in contact with us ever since and we will be sailing with that couple again this November on about the same itinerary we sailed on the Norway. Photos today brought tears to my eyes - not sure if they are tears of happiness for her ``salvation'' so far or tears of sadness because I wish I could walk her decks one more time. Cruising89143 Posted May 23, 2005 #50 Share Posted May 23, 2005 I think that I will take out my video of my 1994 cruise of the Norway and watch it tonight. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to at least sail on this ship once. Looking at the photos that showed the Norway and Pride of American passing shows just how ugly the POA is. I know that NCL did not design this ship but it will be the ugly stepchild of the NCL fleet IMHO.
