MtnBikerFallDown Posted October 27, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 27, 2012 I posted on Carnival board asking for suggestions and someone suggested I post here. My Dad is terminally ill, and loves to cruise. We'd already planned this cruise as my 40th birthday cruise, so we're turning into (in my Dad's words) my mid-life-crisis cruise and his end-life-crisis cruise. In case you can't tell, his attitude is wonderful about this. He's terminal, but he's still feeling okay. Tires easily, and starts hurting towards the end of the day. But, he's doing pretty well and wants to enjoy this to the fullest. We will be in Freeport and Nassau. It'll be me, DH, Mom and Dad. Dad can still walk some, but is unsteady, so we're bringing a wheelchair and his can. He tires easily, but really wants to go out and have some fun. He likes to gamble, so I'm thinking the casino at Atlantis. Is it easy to get to with a wheelchair? I have read taxi or water taxi. I'm assuming regular taxi would be easier for the wheelchair. Thoughts? Also, he loves to people watch. Not much of a beach guy, but loves to shop (I know, he's a one in a million man, he loves to shop!!!). So, what else would you suggest? Anyone? Any really neat stuff that'd be a great way to hit a once-in-a-lifetime trip? Thanks for the input, I truly appreciate it!

momstreat Posted November 2, 2012 #4 Share Posted November 2, 2012 A group of about 30 of us went on this same cruise in September 2010. My daughter took my ex-husband that was terminally ill with stage 4 brain cancer. He did get extremely tired at times but over all had a great time. He would nap some during the day at sea and always was at dinner with a huge smile on his face. Some nights he made it to a show. Smoke in the casino bothered him so no gambling. At the time he was able to walk into Nassau and we walked through the market (maybe 10 minutes) and then went to Senior Frogs where he could sit and enjoy the crowd. He loved people watching there plus we went out and watched a couple of the boats come in with groups after they had been snorkeling. In Freeport we took a taxi to Port Lucaya and spent the day there at a resort. There is a pool, beach, restaurant, and places for him to get into the shade. He got in the pool and had a great time with us. There is that area outside the casino and coffee shop that is a great place to relax and take in lots of sights. One problem he had was aphasia (lost his memory) from the surgery. He could not find the room or his way to or from anywhere. We actually all got tickled one afternoon when he had been standing with a group and I walked up to ask where he was. Someone said he had gone back to his room. Then it hit all of us at one time he couldn't find his room! We found him in line for food. He even thought it was funny! He too had a great attitude. Overall he had a great trip. We would do it over if we only could.
