We were booked on the Celebration Feb 2011 when it was diverted down the Suez Canal early therefore missing out on a couple of stops in the Red Sea and Alexandria. She went into the Med across to Cyprus, Rhodes, Athens and round to Naples but unfortunately the weather was bad - cold and rough seas and we missed out on Sicily for some reason which was never explained. We would never do the Med in winter again. Oh and by the way, we have always experienced armed police convoys when we have had to travel outside the usual tourist haunts in Egypt - Luxor to Abu Simbel for instance and you have to wait around for hours sometimes for other coaches to join. Still a great experience racing across the Sahara! And we visited Egypt just after 9/11 and were well looked after. Thomsons would not put you in danger. I would love to visit again

Perhaps the Gulf may be a possible replacement for the Red Sea winter sailings, visits to Dubai, Oman, Qatar. Dubai would make a good cruise and stay venue.

 

But then if our combination of wishfully thinking and rumours if new ship destination are true, perhaps the replacement could be the far east:D

It was a little MORE than a couple of armed tourist police, I am afraid.

 

We Brits (or should I say English) are used to terrorism, we've lived with it for years on our doorsteps, but this was actually a situation they would not have entered into if they had been told the truth.

 

The convoy of buses had an armed escort. It took 5 hours at the end of the tour for this armed escort to arrive and they were left in Cairo with no food and no water in intense heat for hours. It was not a pleasant experience.

 

Friends who visited Egypt before the troubles began did not experience this so maybe 20 years ago there was a similar situation.

 

No you shouldn't say that! I assume you are unaware of the Glasgow airport attack or indeed Northern Ireland's troubles, the car used in the airport attack was also caught on ANPR at Edinburgh airport and other British (or should I say Scottish) locations:mad: We are all British together and silly comments like that only add to the separatist cause up here. Rant over.

Mind you if the reports about some extreme elements in Egypt are true it might only be sand. Apparently they want to destroy the ancient monuments etc for religious reasons. The pyramids, sphinx etc etc would be destroyed :eek::eek:

Yeap that would be the fundamentalist then, they hate it all, shame. Many years ago when I first wanted to a Nile cruise you could cruise all the way from Cairo to Aswan, and then the fundamentalists took the middle part of egypt and that is now shut to all tourist, oh you can see go the momuments, but you go with the egyptian army surrounding you, all that history and they want to blow it to "kingdom come". :(

 

Knew this would happen, change of government all over that region, makes that region unstable, but there you go.

We did the Cairo to Aswan Nile cruise with Thomsons in 1992 just before these cruises were stopped. The cruise itself was fantastic.

 

Since then we have done two further Nile cruises from Luxor to Aswan, incorporating the Red Sea, plus one on Lake Nasser taking in Cairo and Red Sea since and loved every one. We have also done Port Said and Alexandria on two separate cruises and, having done Cairo, always stayed in port and gone walkabout.

 

Because security is so high we have never once felt at risk and, unless the guys are dressed in black, it is not visible (unless you happen to spot the guns tucked under their armpits under their everyday clothes.:eek:

 

It's such a shame that there are those who feel the need to destroy their own heritage and country.
