Kiwi Kruzer Posted February 18, 2013 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2013 Does anyone know where cruise ships are tendered in the Bay of Islands? Hi Steve, They mostly use Waitangi these days, as they can have the area all to themselves. Lots of room for loading tours onto busses etc. They can also use Paihia and Russell. Depends on what they arrange on the day.
kiwipete Posted February 20, 2013 #3 Share Posted February 20, 2013 Definitely Waitangi unless there are 2 ships in. Then who knows????? The Bay of Islands official on duty yesterday for "Balmoral" told me they preferred Waitangi because it was the easiest landing to police for Customs. Oz_Steve Posted February 20, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted February 20, 2013 Thanks for the replies. Is there a ferry to Russell from Waitangi? I was looking at tours and they seem to leave from Russell or another place I can't remember.
kiwipete Posted February 20, 2013 #5 Share Posted February 20, 2013 The way to Russell from Waitangi is to catch the free shuttle bus from Waitangi to Paihia. Then catch the ferry from Paihia to Russell. Once in Russell there is a local tour company "Janes Tours", I think. They give a good historical tour of the Russell area. To return to the ship, reverse the above process. Enjoy Russell. We love it and always take our visitors over there to have a look around. So much history and was once the capital of NZ! aussiedisneyfan Posted February 20, 2013 #6 Share Posted February 20, 2013 We caught the ferry across to Russell and had a great time. We picked up a tour near the pier, it was a one hour city tour with Fullers. Back in 2011 it was $26pp. There is a great fish and chips place nearby too. I can't remember the details except it had a deck out the front and a restaurant part and takeaway part.
