I originally started this thread looking for pictures of obstructed view balconies on the Royal Princess. A couple were posted here, but I just found this great picture and thought I'd share it. Scroll down about halfway through the article. If you click on the picture you can see it enlarged. This is not the cabin I booked on the Regal, but it does give me a good idea of what to expect. Hope this helps someone else.

The biggest problem with the "lifeboat view" rooms? After several days you are sitting on your balcony, eye level with piles of bird droppings!

This view includes balconies, deluxe balconies & mini suites. (Emerald deck)

Just back from a wonderful cruise on the Royal. We were not on Emerald Deck...BUT wanted to make folks aware that if you are on Emerald Deck mid-ship you most definitely will be affected by the lack of center staircase. Every time you are at the International café, main dining rooms, Piazza, Alfredo's, casino, etc you will have no other option other than the elevators or using the forward or back staircase.

 

One lady I spoke to said she and her adult son got dirty looks a few times when they got on the elevator at Deck 7 and got off at Deck 8, but they had no other option other than elevator or walk to the front or back of the ship stairs. Think it would also be the same for those mid-ship on Deck 15 or 14. You can't just run up a flight of stairs to get to the Horizon Court or pool. For me, those locations would be frustrating as we always use the stairs for walks of two to three decks or less...

 

Just want you to be aware of it...!

Very interesting point that I had not thought of. More and more I think I may have to give up my obstructed view balcony. May give up on the Regal completely, but still have time to decide on that. Thank you for your thoughts.

Hi We have just got back from the Grand Med sailing and we were in a BY Cat E701 Part Obstructed Balcony cabin.

 

Thought I would post pics of view (sorry never posted pics before and can only seem to do thumbnails :o)

 

Cabin was wonderful and I would not hesitate in getting this cabin again. The only negatives that may affect people is:

 

E701 was starboard and the promanade deck was below where people were allowed to smoke so there was a possibility of smelling smoke especially if sensitive to smoke smells.

 

The cabin is above the door to exit onto the promonade and one night when it was very windy the door kept slamming every time people went out to smoke and boy did it feel like the whole cabin shook when that door slammed. It was only a problem the one night we had strong winds but I could imagine that it could be a problem if you on a windy cruise!!

Has anyone figured out just how obstructed these views are? I see some say obstructed and some say partially obstructed. Also, some say you can't access the balcony if the bunk is down. From looking at pictures, it appears that the lifeboats are below the balconies, but I'm not sure. Will there be a lifeboat completely blocking the view or is it just sticking out below? Does anyone know? Thanks. BTW, I did try to search the Everything Royal thread and couldn't find the answer if it's there.

 

I have E115 and E117 reserved on royal princess for a december cruise. I was told by princess agent that there were no obstuctions here. Now i want to be sure!!

Someone should start a thread with peoples submitted photos of the view from specific cabins, like the wonderful link with photos of obstructed view outside cabins on the Princess ships.

 

For our specific sailing on the Royal, the obstructed view balcony cabins weren't much less than the unobstructed view. At this stage, unless I was sure my view was oK, I would not risk it.

Thanks for all the information about the obstructed balconies. We just booked a Mediterranean cruise for the Regal Princess (Sept 2014) from Venice to Barcelona. We chose E428 (Emerald deck) port side since it looks like it has a larger balcony.

 

Would appreciate if anyone could comment on this or send a snapshot of a similar balcony arrangement from the Royal Princess.

Your only obstruction would be the "angle" of your balcony! there is no lifeboat in front of e428!

Thanks for the photo! We were just on the Royal and had an aft balcony, with accompanying soot problem. We had already booked an aft balcony on the Regal for next year but, due to the soot, spoke with the Future Cruise Coordinator and moved to E429. We did not get to view the cabin or balcony from the inside, but we did go down on the semi-promenade on deck 7 and looked up and, indeed, this seemed to be one of the largest balconies of any on the side of the ship, and had absolutely no obstruction from lifeboats, at least not directly in front of the balcony. I suppose if you are looking aft or forward and down to the sea some lifeboat obstruction will likely be evident, but we didn't think this would be much of a problem. And, yes, the partition on the "long wall" of the balcony will obstruct forward viewing a bit but, again, this is always the case. We're really looking forward to sailing in this cabin (sans soot.) ;)

It seems to affect only the aft balconies. We sailed with a friend who was in R728, which is the last balcony cabin on the side of the ship before the corner suite, and he reported no issue whatsoever. We heard the same from others on side balcony cabins. We also did not notice the problem when sitting in the Horizon Terrace area on the Lido Deck, aft.
