Traveling to Boston

We just booked the Carnival Glory for July. We are traveling from NYC to Boston. What would be the best way to do this, car, train, bus?? We have no problem driving, but where is the best place to leave your car and at what cost?

If we do Greyhound, what is the nearest terminal to the cruise port and about what cost a taxi ride?

Thanks for any help

Cheers

I'm from Missouri so I am definitely not an expert on Boston. BUT ;) we did that cruise last summer so here is my 2 cents.

You could walk if you could manage your luggage from the South Station. We stayed at the Boston Westin Waterfront. It was about ten minutes from our hotel to the port - walking. It was about a 10-15 min walk from the hotel to the South Station.

I highly recommend this hotel for pre-cruise. Our cruise was delayed boarding almost 12 hours (over 12 hours for some - which was the next day/Monday) and our ship didn't leave until almost 1:00 pm Monday instead of Sunday.

I was so glad we had stayed Saturday night at this hotel because this was the hotel they stored people while they waited for our delayed ship. (About 2,000 people were hanging out in the lower level of the hotel)

There is a parking structure at Black Falcon but I don't know how much - I know parking in Boston is expensive.

After the cruise we did walk back to the hotel as we were staying one night post cruise here as well.

Thanks for the quick reply.

We weren't thinking of staying overnight. It is about a 4 hour drive from NY, so we figured to do it early that morning, or catch an early bus.

Is there parking by the cruise terminal?

Cheers

The websites of most all cruiseports will have parking info. This is from their site.

Black Falcon Cruise Terminal/Cruiseport Boston

1 Black Falcon Avenue

South Boston, MA 02110

Parking for Cruiseport Boston is available at the BRA-EDIC (Boston Redevelopment Authority-Economic Development Industrial Corporation) Marine Industrial Park garage, located at 12 Drydock Ave. The five-story, enclosed parking facility located across from the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal, is owned by the City of Boston and operated by EDIC. Ticketed cruise passengers receive a special rate of $16 per day. Cash, Visa, or MasterCard are accepted.

The garage has a vehicle height limit of 6’10” but there are some spaces available for oversized vehicles. The garage is monitored 24 hours a day. For further information about parking at the BRA-EDIC Marine Industrial Park garage, please call (617) 482-2487.

Dropping off Passengers

If you are dropping off passengers at Black Falcon Cruise Terminal, drive to the end of Drydock Avenue and turn right onto Black Falcon Avenue. Continue until you reach a stop sign, at which point Port Officers will direct you on passenger drop-off.

If parking in the BRA-EDIC garage after passenger drop off at the terminal, turn right onto Design Center Place and left onto Drydock Avenue. The parking garage will be on your right.

Picking up Arriving Passengers

Try our cell phone lot! Cruiseport Boston's cell phone waiting lot is located a quarter-mile from Black Falcon Cruise Terminal at 22 Fid Kennedy Avenue just east of the intersection with Tide Street. The lot is open whenever cruises arrive home to Boston's port for the convenience of disembarking passengers and those picking up at the terminal.

The route from the cell phone lot to the terminal is well marked. Tell your party to call you as they exit the ship - the cell phone lot is only minutes away.

We're cruising out of Boston in June. Our plans are to take the commuter rail to Boston's South Station, then taking the Silver line #2 right to the Black Falcon Terminal. Even if you can find a park & fly/cruise hotel, you should look for cheaper hotels on the commuter rail. If not you can do extended parking at some of the commuter rail lots.

We are sailing on the Dawn on July 26th. We are coming in from upstate NY. Our plans are to drive to Albany, NY, the day before and stay overnight. Then it will off to Boston on the morning of the cruise which is about a 2.5 hour drive. We will be parking at the terminal at the $16 a day. These plans were actually cheaper for our group of 16 then staying near Boston in a Park/Cruise package. There is a hotel in Quincy MA that does the Park/Cruise and keeps your car for free. They shuttle you to the port. Their shuttle only holds 10 people at a time so we would have had to do it in two trips. They told me they only do 2 trips a day so we decided to stay in Albany and park at the terminal.

Giantfan13 - you've gotten good information from all the posters. Since you live in West Hempstead and want to come up the morning of the cruise, it does make sense to drive rather than try to get into Manhattan to take a train or bus. Parking for a 7 day cruise is $112. None of the park/sleep hotels are close to the pier except for Embassy Suites at the airport. $16 is a steal to park in Boston - it's a special reduced rate for cruisers only.

If you are cruising on a weekend, make sure you look at the weekend commuter rail schedule, as service is much reduced on Sat/Sun than it is during the week. A number of lines don't run at all on the weekends.

Thanks Nitemare, we're Friday to Friday on this cruie. Before we moved the commuter rail used to run on the weekends on a limited schedule. Good info.

There is a parking garage at the pier. Last year it was $110 for a week to park there (8 days).
