Rome-Princess day excursion

We are on the Ruby 21 day Med Adventure and have a stop at Civitavecchia. We have booked the Princess transfer into Rome for the day. If anyone has done this, I would like to know where they drop you off and pick you up. It would make planning the rest of the day much easier!:) Thanks.

We did this a couple of years ago and were dropped off in a street that leads up to the Vatican, only a couple of minutes walk. They tell you to meet in a little side street around there. There is a shop where you are allowed to use the toilets but if you walk up to the Vatican there are lovely toilets there on the left hand side.

We did Rome on your own,

 

the bus stopped at a couple of locations and gave pick up times,

 

at the last stop we were taken to another bus,

 

our guide came with us,

 

we went to all the major places the guide would tell us you have an hour

 

or 30 minutes then bus will leave, if you want to do your own thing fine

 

but you need to meet back at the main bus pick up at X hour

 

turned out to be one of the best tours we have ever done,

Last time we did Rome on your Own with P&O they had changed the drop off point from just below the Vatican to a place quiet a walk away.

The busses drop you off in an underground parking lot near St Peters square. The group is then marched en mass to a shop that allows the use of toilets. You are then given a pick up time to meet at the same shop. As I recall we were there in plenty of time to take an 11am Vatican tour.

How far away from the dropoff/pick up point are the Spanish Steps and Trevi fountain? Been to Rome before and saw most of the sights but have not seen those two and would like to visit the Vatican again.

From near the Vatican, you can pop on the subway (it is not on the side of St. Mark's square where the train station is...it is the opposite side...check out some good maps

and go to the stop for the Spanish Steps...and from there go to Trevi...

BTW

you can accomplish a lot more than that in a day...so if you wanted to go to the colloseum also....go there first and you can meander back...we were able to walk to Pantheon..then to Trevi...and then Spanish Steps and took subway back to Vatican...

If you don't mind walking both are easy to do. We visited other places on our way there and back.

Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are easily walkable from the Vatican and you can also see the Pantheon. Might be a good idea to get a good map of Rome prior to the visit. Spanish Steps are nothing particulary exciting but beware when visiting Pantheon and Trevi Fountain they get very busy and beware of pick pockets.

I'm confused, as the description of "Rome on your own" on our cruise (Royal) says the bus drops you off near St. Peter's Square and you are told where to meet for pickup. Doesn't say anything about several stops or a guide going with you after you are dropped off. Am I missing something here?

 

We are wanting to do most of the "touristy" things in Rome, but NOT the Vatican, as we want to do it when we return to Rome at the end of our cruise when we'll stay for several days. Anyone got any ideas on how we can accomplish the other part using "Rome on Your Own"?

Been in Rome for the past 5 days and it is very walkable as stated by shilly.

We are in a apartment 1 block from the Pantheon admission is free. While there walk over to the Piazza Navona about 3 short blocks away one of the best Piazza's in Rome. A very impressive centre fountain and 2 smaller at either end the surrounding buildings are far more impressive then the Trevi area.

About a 15 minute walk from PN to Trevi and about 5 or 10 from Trevi to Spanish Steps.

To Colosseum from Pantheon is 20 minute walk. Buy your advance entrance tickets for the Forum entrance on the way to avoid the lines at the Colosseum. 36e gets you an advance Colosseum ticket and entrance to the Forum and Palantino. The Constintian arch is behind the Colosseum on your way to the Palantino.

You will walk past the Republicca on your way to the Colesseum.

To see the Bocca you need at least another hour as it is about a 1/2 hr walk from the Republica and likely a wait in line of 20 minutes to place your hand in it's mouth. It is all up hill to get back.

A 1.50e donation is requested and an attendant uses your camera to take your picture 1 per person if the line is long.

These walk times are based on our mobility and we have a tendency to walk fast and do it for hours on end. We walked for 8 hours one day with brief stops. The Hop of and On is right at the Vatican 20e for 24 hours hits all the hot spots and is about 1 & 1/2 hours to ride the loupe for those who are not up to walking. Usually 20 minutes between buses.

 

5 days in Rome and no sign of a pick pocket.....

If you are an EU citizen over 65 you get into Forum, Palatine and Colosseum free as well as free entry to other places.
