London, British Isles and Global phones

Recommended Posts

Will be cruising the British Isles with friends, as well as spending some time in London and we are told our US cell phones will not work in the UK. We're thinking of getting "throw away" phones once we arrive so that we can keep in touch while on excursions and with family, but also see a couple of companies where you can purchase global phones online. Anyone with experience of one or both? online are Mobal dot com and telestial dot com.

Thanks in advance for any ideas, suggestions help!

You're probably better off posting this on the 'British Isles' forum. This is more for UK cruisers to chat about non-cruise things....

Welcome to Cruise Critic!

Talk to your cell phone provider. I have a friend who spent a week in Paris. For something like $20 or $25 she was given a "loaner" that would work overseas. When she returned she gave them back the phone. I can't remember who her provider is but it is worth checking here to see if you can do that. No doubt it would be a lot easier and less costly.

Have a great cruise.

First off your phone will need to be unlocked. And second your phone will need to be GSM.

If your US carrier is either Sprint or Verizon then your phone is most likely be CDMA. If it is AT&T or T-Mobile then it will be GSM.

If you want a throw away phone for at least England, Scotland, Wales and N Ireland then these are like £5 plus you will need to add credit to it. Republic of Ireland will be classified as roaming I believe.
