SS Azure Seas

Recommended Posts

Did you ever inquire with RCCL if they would give you a sailing credit for your 1983 Azure Seas Cruise?

If I could receive credit for my 1982 sailing, it would put me at diamond level!

Post #35 has a great history of the ship..It was Western Cruise line in the 80's and not affiliated with RCCL of today. It was our first cruise too and what a memory!

Like so many, my husband and I took a 4 day cruise to Ensenada out of LA in 1988- I was 5-6 months pregnant, so it must have been May or June. Again, took this short cruise to see if we would "like" cruising!!! LOL!! My parents came to see us off, and they were able to board the ship before she sailed!

Ensenada was where I had my first fish taco- everyone told me I "had" to have one, and thought it sounded horrible. And, of course, they were, and are, wonderful!!

I cruised the Azure Seas back in 1991 I think it was. I was 15, and it was my first cruise, so my memories were vague. I was with my parents and was able to bring a friend. I actually have a couple of photos on my Facebook page of that trip. There are 2 things that stand out as different that cruising today, form looking back at the photos. One, is that the chairs in the movie theater were moveable dining room style chairs all lined up, and not theater style as we are used to today. And the other was that they gave us those coiled paper confetti things to throw off the ship as we sailed off from San Pedro. Another thing I remember was that when we got to Catalina, the winds and waves were bad enough that they wouldn't tender us off the ship, so we technically had a day at say instead. Luckily I have been there several times since.

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I just now saw the question.

I'm taking an RCCL this December. I had to combine two accounts with them since some were in my maiden name. They had this and a second cruise I took on this ship in my maiden name account. They automatically gave me credit for those two cruises so I now have six cruises with RCCL.

Give them a call and see if they have them for you to make Diamond.

Add me to the list of first timer on this cruise. I was a teenager back then and sailed in early 80's with my family for the first time to Ensenada. Ran into some bad weather but nevertheless was an interesting experience. I remembered the movie shown in the cruise theater at the time was "WarGames."

Here we are 30 years later with my own family, about to get on Carnival Breeze, my 2nd cruise ever. Things sure have changed a lot since then!

I had a video case about the Azure Seas that I used when I taught college marketing. It was a great way to explain services marketing. The video case claimed that Western cruise lines was one of the first cruise lines to use television advertising and low pricing as a draw to book the Azure Seas.

My son and his friend won this cruise around 1984 or 85! They were 15 years old and were so excited.

The other boys mother and I shared one cabin and the two boys shared another cabin on a different deck. Only rules we set for them was they were to eat meals with us! And had to meet us in port every two hours and before dark!

We remember taking them to one of the local bars to get soda's so they could tell their friends they went there.

But the ship's service we enjoyed so much! The room stewards cleaned up the rooms about 4 times a day. The kids said they went to the ship to drop off their "goodies" from port and grab lunch before heading back out for more fun! When they came back, everything in the room was picked up again, all "stuff" folded and stacked, even the coins were stacked on the table all in order. They couldn't figure it out, so we told them the stewards have hidden cameras and know when the room needs straightening out! What fun memories.

That was my first cruise, second was with my DH on the "Big Red Boat", we've been crusing ever sence!

The next year the two boys won again, but that time is was an all enclusive resort in Mexico...they chose my brother-in-law and his friend to chaprone them that time....we never did hear all the stories on that trip....

I was hunting for some pictures from 1986 and stumbled across a pro photo of myself and my son on a ship with SS Asure Seas from 1986. I found this thread when I went hunting to find out what cruise line it was part of. I think this explains the 4 day trip Royal Caribbean found when creating my loyalty account with them.

Forgive me for intruding on this conversation, 9 years later. I found this topic while googling "Azure Seas" as this was the last ship my parents boarded for a cruise, around December 1996. I'm quite curious, for I was born 9 months after their trip to Ensenada. :D Nonetheless, it's a shame I will not be able to sail the ship.

OMG I don't know how I stumbled upon this thread but I was on probably one of the last Admiral Azure Seas cruises out of FLL. I loved the ship. It was so cozy and friendly. We were invited to dine with the Captain at his table one night.

I believe it was just before Admiral went out of business so they were cutting corners. The only entertainment on board were ship's crew. One night the Captain played his accordion as the full show. lol Truly unforgettable.

She was a GREAT ship.

Hey GTVCRUISER, thanks for that nice montage of images! Seeing you and yours on the gangplank of the SS Azure Seas makes me wish we'd bought the photographer's pictures back in 1981 when we sailed her. I was a teen then, and it was my first cruise. Now that I am cruising more often, it sure would be nice to have a family photo from that cruise, which would also include my dearly departed. I wonder if some cruise line or photographer somewhere actually has the negatives they took from all the passengers back in those days? What a treasure trove it would be!

I have been racking my brain for many years to remember the name of the ship we sailed on for our first cruise. It was around 1991 or 1992. We sailed out of Long Beach. This was a special charter sailing for our church at the time. We went to Puerta Vallarta, Matazlan, and Cabo San Lucas.

Our daughters were 19 and 20 and we were all in a tiny cabin with a tinier bathroom. They had major problems with the air conditioning on this cruise and we were hot and sweaty the entire time. However, I remember how good the food was.

Our church frowned on gambling so the casino was closed the entire time. I'm guessing we had to pay more for our fares to make up for the loss of that revenue.

Also our first cruise in 83 or 84. went to San Diego and Ensenada. Had an inside cabin with 2 of our 3 children. A friend who was a travel agent put a 4 day package together and close to 100 people went. The ship only held 600 or 700 so everywhere we went on the ship there was someone we knew. Remember a rough night coming back to LA and practically everyone in the dining room left early to go get sick in their rooms. My wife wanted to know where the bowling alley was the next morning. I told her that was the waves hitting the ship probably right outside our lower level inside cabin. Booked a balcony cabin ever since.

Sadly, the Azure Seas was beached and broken up for scrap metal in Chittagong, Bangladesh on November 5, 2003. She ended her life as Ocean Breeze. I have a travel agency poster of her as "S.S. Azure Seas, L.A.'s first cruise ship" I think about her every day.

At one time it was independent. The owners of the Azure Seas, Emerald Seas and Sundance Cruises merge to form Admiral Cruises. They were in the process of building a new ship when Royal Caribbean purchased them. They kept the new ship, Empress and the Stardancer was renamed Viking Serenade.

I love the fact that there's an ongoing thread about the Azure Seas and that people have good memories. I took the regular trumpet player's place on the ship for 6 weeks in the summer of 1983 while he and his bride got married and had an extended honeymoon. From what I understand, she worked in the gift shop and they met on the ship. Our bass player also met his wife on the ship - she worked in the casino. The band director had his own room and the rest of us had 2 to a room. We had a private dining room separated by a wall from the main dining room, and we had the same menu as the guests - but we didn't need to dress up for dinner. Room and board were free to us in addition to our salaries. Various performers would come and go from week to week so we'd rehearse in the afternoon then perform at night - twice because there was 1st seating and 2nd seating at meals. The main show would be in the front of the ship. We also did the Captain's Cocktail Party and a late show in the back of the ship. Wednesdays were our day off (always in Ensenada) and most of us developed friendships with the locals in Ensenada. I have wonderful memories of my time on the ship, as do the other musicians. Some of them still get together for reunions (in LA) every few years.

:halo:

Reading these posts brought back lots of very fond, happy memories! We cruised on the Azure Seas out of LA for our Honeymoon in June 1988. Sadly I only have a hand full of poor quality pictures (what was I thinking taking only a few pictures!?!?!).

I still have our room key, which says Room 511. All I remember of the room was that it was teeny tiny--the size of a bread box! :) However, being our honeymoon--who cared? :) The bathroom had to be the size of a broom closet!

The food was EXCELLENT, best lobester tail I ever ate. The service superb!

We've only been on one other cruise since, & even though it was wonderful, I was so disappointed in the food---not even close to what I remember eating every night on the Azure Seas.

Hey, I noticed that you guys were on your Honeymoon aboard the SS Azure Seas in June 1988. What part of the month were you on there? I also Honeymooned aboard Azure Seas in June 88, towards the end of the month about the 20th or 22st maybe? Anyway, I was just wondering if we were on the same cruise, from LA to San Diego, to Catalina Island to Ensenada Mexico and then back to LA. I would appreciate it if you would let me know and also if you have any pics from the cruise? Thnx.

Hey there Trumpetplayer. I worked on the Azure also (casino)

We got to know some of the musicians pretty well. There was a bass player called Lyndsey and a horn player called Ken, I think his last name was Bausano. Do you know any of these guys. Also a ventriloquist called Todd Oliver.

Did it many times. Boy, those were the days. Good times, great memories.

Yes I also traveled alot on that ship. If I had a free week off. I would drive to San Pedro. Tell the staff I wanted to sail. They told me a price. I gave them my credit card and off I went. I sailed in inside outside and suites
