Calliope Posted July 4, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 4, 2013 I guess July Fourth is as good as any day to celebrate the anniversary of the start of Cunard Line. It was on July 4, 1840 when the first Cunard steamship, BRITANNIA, left Liverpool on her maiden voyage carrying the Royal Mail to Canada and the United States. pepperrn Posted July 4, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 4, 2013 HAPPY BIRTHDAY Cunard Line - founded by Sir Samuel Cunard on this day in 1840.The British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company's paddle steamer Britannia sailed from Liverpool for Halifax and Boston at 2pm on this day, 4th July 1840 with sixty-three passengers. They arrived at Halifax ten days later :) The line was founded by Samuel Cunard (not "Sir"; he didn't get his knighthood until much later), amongst others, in May 1839. The line didn't become the "Cunard Line" offically until the 1880s. But other than that... you're spot on... :) :D :) "happy birthday" (Isn't there another birthday on this day as well? :D )
TheOldBear Posted July 4, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 4, 2013 As I recall reading, King George's diary entry for 4 July 1776 said "Nothing of importance happened today". :)
ANSalberg Posted July 4, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 4, 2013 One of the delightful things about history is simply imagining what it must have been like; from Pyramids to Jesus to Henry VIII to Washington to WWII to ......now, and our cruises to see the WONDERS of OUR World! Happy BIRTHDAY!
