Days at Sea

Recommended Posts

Do the cruise lines typically do anything different to get people to mix and mingle?

Yes. You'll get a daily program sent to your cabin. On sea days there will be more to choose from.

My favorite things to do are have a leisurely breakfast, then spend the day reading, working on my hobby, doing some gambling, and taking part in some of the ship's activities.

My DH takes part in more ship activities than I do, especially Team Trivia. He also does some gambling. We both take part in Blackjack tournaments.

I have a routine. I tend to lay out in the morning, have lunch, do a few activities and then enjoy the hot tubs before I shower and get ready for dinner. There are a lot of activities, but I tend to spend most of the day on lido.

Sleep in a bit...not TOO late, tho! Have a nice breakfast, go to the pool....read and bake and drink....gamble, if you feel like it....take your time getting ready for dinner and relax! You don't need to be busy 24/ 7!!!!

I love sea days.If the weather is nice we can sit on our balcony or on deck. I am an avid reader and most ships have good libraries. Trivia is fun and so are other games. Some ships have sea day lectures and cooking classes. It is often hard to make choices when so much is offered.

I adore sea days - my last cruise had 8, and I've got my eye on a transpacific cruise with 12 or 13 sea days. I enjoy sitting on the deck, watching the sea and reading, and listening to the waves. Sometimes napping. Sometimes walking the promenade deck. Sometimes strolling the ship, chatting with people and enjoying a leisurely drink. Sometimes a steam and sauna. I kept meaning to go to the lectures, but I kept forgetting what time it was, LOL. In fact, I can't really remember what I did with all those sea days (I know somehow I read 7 books), but I do know I felt wonderfully relaxed and happy :)

Sea days are great, love to play trivia, stroll the promenade deck, stare at the waves, people watch, post Live from threads at Cruise Critic and partake in Cruise Critic planned activities like Cabin Crawls, Slot Pulls and Meet & Greets.

DW and I love sea days and often choose cruises for that reason. We have been on one cruise where we had 23 sea days and loved every minute. A cruising buddy says I have a PhD in doing nothing....and there is some truth. On many sea days DW and I will spend a majority of the day in a comfy deck chair with our Kindles. We love to read and cruises allow a great opportunity to catch-up on books. On lines such as HA, where they often have great lecturers we might attend that event. And then there is the socialization that can become a great part of any cruise (especially longer voyages).

We actually hate them. I'm usually bored & feel trapped because I can't get off the ship.

It's ironic because the cruise we take most often has 4 of them & 2 are in cold weather in & out of NYC.

On embarkation day we stay up all night partying & sleep most of the day because it's too cold to go outside. We'll usually organize the cabin when we finally wake up.

On the last one -- another cold day we again sleep in. maybe watch TV & pack slowly. Often I bring work & ease myself into the end of the vacation. We tend to hide out in the ship's library. We'll venture into the buffet at some off time, usually around 2:30 - 3:00 when there aren't as many people in there.

For the warm weather ones, if you want a lounger by the pool, you'd best be up & on deck before 7 a.m. I have managed to drag myself out there by 8 to find all the chair hogs have struck.

There will be more on board activities listed in your daily scheduler so do what makes you happy. I try to find a spot in the sun as far from the crowds as possible.

My DH and I both love sea days. While getting a lounger by the pool is difficult, you can find some if you go upstairs above the pool.

DH loves sitting on the balcony and watch the water go by while I sit and read a book on my Kindle. We spend time in the gym; casino; eating breakfast on our balcony; blackjack tournaments; basically just relaxing and enjoying our vacation.

I like to sleep in, enjoy a few hours at the spa, yoga, get some sun...maybe a nap pool side or on some chair on a deck somewhere, explore the ship, take a class or see a lecture, play bingo, the group I go with we bring dominoes to play, watch a movie.

The first sea day we will attend or Host the Meet and Greet. If there is a cooking school I am first in line and have done 3 in the past. Any photography and Movie classes will also find me in attendance. Movies have been added to some of these since the newer generation of cameras will also shoot some pretty good movies in addition to stills. Of course there is Breakfast on the balcony of our suite on the rear of the ship where there is no breeze to blow things off the balcony.

If you are lucky enough to have an active roll-call, your group can organize other activities, like cabin crawls and slot pulls, in addition to your regular CC Meet & Mingle. That's one reason that the Trans-Atlantic/Pacific cruises have such active roll-call threads. Those folks know that they have a lot of sea days to fill!
