Oasis Aug. 17 Western Caribbean Review with pics

Recommended Posts

My family and I just returned from the most amazing vacation! I would like to offer my thoughts and some pictures. I will give a general review first, then post pictures if I can figure out how to do it! I took over 300!!

PRE-CRUISE

We arrived in Ft. Lauderdale (husband, son-14, daughter-12) on Friday the 16th around 1pm. Very quick and cheap cab ride to the Embassy Suites on 17th St. My advice is go for the cab. It's a lot cheaper than the shuttles. We were very pleased with the Embassy Suites and would stay there again. We told them we were planning to surprise our children with this cruise the morning of sailing and they gave us a 12th floor room facing the port so we could reveal the Oasis to them! It was amazing. They were over the moon when we told them. Anyway, we had a delicious dinner at Bimini Boatyard with old friends who live in Miami. BB is just a short walk from the ES. The food and service were fabulous. I highly recommend it. We did not do the complimentary managers cocktail party on Friday night. We were exhausted and napped instead. We did partake in the complimentary breakfast buffet Saturday morning. It was standard, but it was very good and there was plenty to eat.

EMBARKATION

We easily got a cab to the port (again, WAY cheaper than the shuttle) and were there in 5 minutes. We unloaded, gave our bags to a porter and tipped $2 a bag. He was a very pleasant guy too! We left the hotel around 10:30 by the way. We breezed through security and check-in. No lines at all. We got our embarkation photos, and headed up to the waiting area. There had been a fire alarm on the ship earlier in the morning which slowed down disembarkation, so we did have to wait about half an hour to 45 minutes, but it went by fast. Once they started boarding the process went very quickly and was orderly. We were on the ship by 11:30/45. We got our bearings and headed straight to the Park Café. Thank you Cruise Critic for that advice! We had a very good lunch (no line!)and frequented the PC. I had a salad, and my husband and kids had the roast beef which they loved and had more than once during the week. Our rooms were ready very shortly thereafter and our luggage arrived as we were checking out our rooms for the first time. Very quick! So I immediately started unpacking to get it out of the way and start enjoying the ship. Muster was quick and we took the stairs up to deck 15 for sail away.

ROOMS

We had 8544(ocean view balcony - husband and I) and 8545 (inside - kids) right across the hall from each other. I had no issue with the size, after all we were only there to sleep and change. Our cabins were forward starboard on the same deck as Central Park. I would do that again in a heartbeat. We loved the location. The rooms were clean and had plenty of storage. I brought an over the door shoe hanger, but never used it. There was plenty of room for all of our stuff. I also found the hair dryer supplied to be fine. I'm glad that I didn't bring mine. I did however, bring my own shower gel, shampoo and conditioner and bath puffs. They do supply a shower gel but I didn't use it. Prefer my own and I like using a puff as opposed to a wash rag. I bring a puff every time I go away and then just leave it there. Our stateroom attendant was Imade and he was awesome. He separated the bed for the kids immediately after we asked and they were thrilled. He also made us some lovely towel animals during the week and was very helpful with our disembarkation confusion.

DRINK PACKAGES

We did not purchase any of the drink packages and didn't need them. My husband and I only had about two drinks a day, and none of us missed the soda. My kids are only allowed to have soda once a day anyway and they didn't miss it. We all loved the flavored waters that were available in a lot of the venues and had tap water at dinner. We told the kids they could have soda at dinner but they only took that option once. We also drank iced tea. Honestly, for us, the packages would have been a waste of money.

TEEN CLUB

If you have a 12-17 year old, do encourage them to attend the teen 411 on the first night. Our kids made friends immediately and had a blast with them all week. On sea days, we only saw our kids at breakfast and dinner! There are lots of activities including dance parties, video game competitions, pool parties...they will not be bored! The first evening we told them that they had to check in with us at 10pm so we knew what they were doing and they would know where we would be. They came running up to us all excited and said there was a dance and could they stay up past midnight (our imposed curfew for them on the ship). They were so excited! We happily said "yes". We were so pleased for them. During the rest of the week, we did keep the midnight curfew and they mostly kept to it. There were a few special circumstances, and they did always check in with us. Just so you know, ship curfew for minors is 1am.

SHOWS

We saw HAIRSPRAY, OASIS OF DREAMS(diving), COME FLY WITH ME, FROZEN IN TIME(ice show), Comedy Show, THROW ME A LINE.

All were excellent. There is a tremendous amount of talent on that ship! Definitely try to get to as many of the shows as you can. My kids loved Hairspray. My husband and I saw it on Broadway several years ago and it was nearly as good. (We're a little biased because the Edna on Broadway is a friend:)) All of the singing, dancing and acting was excellent. I am a professional singer and voice teacher, so I am very critical when I see a show. Can't help it! But I loved everything!

OK, I need a break. There is more to say than I thought! Up next, BARS AND RESTAURANTS...

Thank you for doing the review. We are anxious to hear more!

I love the looks on your kids faces when they found out they were going on the cruise. What did they think they were going to do that week?

For months they thought they were going to the wedding of my husband's friend/work colleague. Aren't we stinkers?!

BTW, I forgot to mention that this was our second cruise. Our first was in 2006 on DCL's Wonder. We loved it! This is our first with Royal, obviously and we are hooked!

FOOD/VENUES

MDR - We ate in the MDR 5 out of 7 nights and the kids ate there 6 of 7. We enjoyed it very much. Our service was wonderful. Ron our waiter, Jeyson our asst. waiter and Roshan our head waiter were very attentive and accommodating. On night 6 my husband and I had reservations for 150 CP, so the kids went to the dining room alone. We went down with them just to make sure it was OK. They took such good care of the kids and when we saw Jeyson and Roshan at the Windjammer the next morning they wanted to make sure we were happy with the way they took care of the kids the previous evening. The food was good to excellent. No complaints at all. We dressed according to the recommendations and from what I could tell, so did most of the guests. So it did make the few who wore shorts look out of place. The dining room is beautiful and we really enjoyed it. We did breakfast (buffet) there once. Really no different than any place else. Just a few different choices.

WINDJAMMER

We ate breakfast there mostly and had lunch there once. Though I can't say where the kids ate lunch. They were always with a posse of other teens. Anyway, I found the breakfast and lunch to be good. There were plenty of choices and lots of healthy stuff to choose from. I loved the cut up fruit and oatmeal. If you get there before 9am on sea days, there is no line. On port days, it depends. I know I've read some unfavorable reviews about WJ, but we loved it. We also loved Leo the coffee guy! He was a riot and very attentive.

SOLARIUM

We had lunch here on the one day the we spent in the Solarium. We both enjoyed the lunch very much and were happy with the lighter choices. We like the Solarium in general except that it did get a bit too hot. It was nice and peaceful though.

PARK CAFE

Loved it. We had lunch there a few times and also stopped in for coffee or snacks at various times. I loved that our cabin was so close. I fell in love with their vegetable Panini. In case you haven't figured it out, I was trying to eat healthy whenever I could!

CHOPS

Excellent!! The kids and I all had the petite filet mignon and my husband had the porterhouse. Some of the best steak I've ever had, and I don't eat steak very often. I highly recommend this venue. The mango custard dessert is fabulous.

150 CENTRAL PARK

This was our romantic dinner for two. What a wonderful experience. Definitely high service and you really want to dress nicely for this venue. It's a 6 course tasting menu. We loved everything about it and would highly recommend it. I have a funny story though and a word to the wise. Be sure that you understand that the chef determines the menu and there is one for the first half of the cruise and a different for the second. In other words, you do NOT choose what you are getting other than making them aware of dietary restrictions. My husband hates onions and they removed them wherever necessary. Well, a couple is seated a few tables away from us and we couldn't help but overhear the gentleman complaining that there was no strip steak on the menu. He was speaking loud enough to be heard on the Boardwalk! The waiter politely informed him that the steak was on the earlier menu but not on this one. He very loudly exclaimed that he couldn't eat this "crap", threw down his napkin and stormed out saying that he was going to Chops. Well, I can appreciate that he might not have realized what he was getting himself into, but there were better ways to handle it. If you are not adventurous with food and willing to try new taste combinations, this might not be the venue for you. But we loved everything on the menu. Our menu was: Florida Lobster and Lychee Salad, Red Pepper Soup, Homemade Cavatelli Pasta, Pan Roasted Pompano, Mixed Grill of Venison and Sausage, and Lychee Cuatro Leches with a Mango Salsa. Excellent!

LUNCH AT LABADEE

We thought this was fine. Again, I know there have been complaints, but we were fine with it. The jerk chicken was pretty good and there were plenty of choices.

CAFE PROMENADE

My daughter made a ritual of getting brownies there every night. We got one to share and some coffee the last night and sat on our balcony watching the moonlight. I highly recommend this! The brownies were very good.

JOHNNY ROCKETS

We only got there for breakfast. We found the breakfast to be very good. They had real eggs and eggbeaters. It is a limited menu, but breakfast, unlike lunch and dinner, is complimentary. We wanted to get there once for lunch, but just never made it.

Oh, I forgot to mention that we had early seating (6pm). That worked well for us. I don't like eating a big meal late and it also gave us a set time that the kids had to meet us everyday.

Also, if anyone has questions, I'll be happy to answer whatever I can.

There will be lots more at the end, but here are a few related to what I've already written about.

150 CP - Bread and 6 different salts from around the world to sprinkle onto your sweet butter. They were yummy, but don't fill up on the bread!

And dessert. This is the only food porn I have. Sorry, I just feel weird taking pictures of my food.:o

150 CP. Elegant.

Our Cabin. We really liked the bed by the window set-up.

Have to take the kids to karate now. Back later with PORTS, EXCURSIONS.

Enjoying your review and looking forward to the rest.. I hadn't heard about the two menus for 150CP - are both posted prior to the cruise anywhere or are they decided on/around embarkation day?

I don't know if they are posted anywhere pre-cruise. However, both menus are posted outside 150 CP all week so you can take a look. I suppose you could call RCL and ask. I imagine they have to plan the menus ahead of time to be sure they have the ingredients on board.

BARS/LOUNGES

Something just went wonky with my fonts and stuff. I'll try and fix it, but in any case...

As I stated earlier, my husband and I did not drink a lot, but we did have 2 or 3 drinks each evening before or after dinner or both. My husband is an extra dry vodka martini slightly dirty kind of guy, while I'm a cosmo, margarita kind of gal. So that said, our favorite venues for drinks were the Champagne Bar and the Rising Tide Bar. I loved the different champagne drinks in the CB. I got a Kir Royale the fist night then on subsequent nights I tried some different things. I loved their sparkling margarita. My husband said they made the perfect martini as well. He also liked the martini in Rising Tide. That wins for the sheer novelty of it. You must experience it. We also loved Jazz on 4 for the laid back atmosphere and really good jazz. We did the 80's dance party in Dazzles and had a great time hanging with some new friends we met via the roll call, but I got tired as it approached midnight. It was also just a bit too crowded and noisy for me. We loved the music the DJ was playing and the band was good, but when they came on, they played some of the same songs we had just heard. Now I was in high school in the 80's and I know there were more than a few hits. Boleros looked like a lot of fun and was clearly one of the most hopping places in the evenings, but we never got the chance to go there. I love Latin dancing too. We were going to the piano bar, but decided we weren't crazy about the music being played. The night life is very vibrant on the ship and you can find a venue to your liking. They cater to almost every taste.[/color]

Oh, I totally forgot to mention one of our experiences in the Champagne Bar. We were sitting on one of the couches to the right of the bar. There was another couple sharing a bottle of champagne to our left and the couch to our right was unoccupied. Well this family comes in and they are trying to find places to take pictures of this one girl in her gown. They decided that the couch next to us was a good place and proceeded to move the chairs around into our way and then the girl with the camera moves the little cocktail table into our space and whacks it into our table spilling both our drinks. She apologized but the drinks were already spilled. Now we didn't lose a lot but it was still very rude. So she proceeds to take pictures while this little boy, I'm guessing about 10 is spinning around in circles and no one in the family is stopping him. He finally sits in one of the chairs opposite us as if he were joining us. The couple next to us were incredulous. We were all amazed at the rudeness. So we ended up moving and actually joined the couple next to us. They were celebrating their honeymoon and were from Ireland. We spent maybe 45 minutes talking to them before we had to go to the ice show. It was very enjoyable and we ran into them several times after. We exchanged email addresses and plan to stay in touch. So what started out as an annoying experience ended with us making new friends.:)

ON BOARD STUFF

I want to cover some miscellaneous stuff here. First, some thoughts for anyone who suffers from seasickness or is afraid of it. I have always been a bit motion sick. I can't read while riding in a car, I can't do spinning rides, and I have at times suffered from seasickness. I was determined to take every possible precaution that did not involve a prescription. I did the patch when we took the Disney cruise and I was not happy with it. It gave me blurred vision and a VERY dry mouth. I also still got sick on our snorkeling excursion in the smaller boat. So this time I took the advice of so many folks on CC. I brought Bonine (meclizine) as well as a homeopathic remedy called "Nau-zene", candied ginger, ginger pills and Sea Bands. I can't take Bonine during the day as it makes me VERY sleepy even though it's not supposed to. So I started taking it the night before the cruise. During the day I would take Nau-zene. I never ended up using the ginger pills or the Sea Bands. I did take the candied ginger from time to time. I had no issues on the cruise at all, including our very choppy boat ride for parasailing in Haiti. So, I know everyone is slightly different, but this is what worked for me.

JOGGING TRACK/FITNESS CTR.

I was a good girl and got my butt onto the jogging track even if it was later in the afternoon due to excursions. I prefer mornings though. In the mornings I was on the track by 7:30. It was very peaceful. I only got to the fitness center twice and didn't participate in any classes, though I would have loved to. I just did my own thing with free weights. The fitness center is great and they supply towels and there are mats for floor work.

ZIPLINE/FLOWRIDER

We all took Flowrider lessons. They were unfortunately moved from our original time of 9:30am on Sunday (sea day) to 8:45PM. It was a drag to get all dressed up for the first formal night and then have to get into a bathing suit to do the lessons, but oh well. They did offer us an upgrade for the inconvenience, (we were told about a week before the cruise) but we couldn't do that because we had two cabins and needed the kids right across the hall from us. The lessons were great fun. My husband, daughter and I all did boogie board and my son did stand up. He got pretty good too. The instructors were patient and very helpful and encouraging. We never got another chance to do it though. So I just don't know if it was worth the money. My son did do it again with the teen club. WARNING: If you wear a two piece bathing suit you will most likely lose part of it and entertaining the crowd. If this is not your intention, then wear a one piece or shorts and a rash guard over your suit. I was way more butts than I ever want to see while waiting for my husband to zip line!!

My husband and daughter both did the zip line. They loved it. Husband did it 3 times! I wanted to, but I didn't feel like standing in the line. It's hard for multiple family members to do it together because someone has to hold all the belongings. (watches, lanyards...)

POOLS/HOT TUBS

I have no idea which pools the kids used but I do know that there seemed to be an almost nightly gathering of teens in the hot tubs. They loved that. My husband and I did the Solarium pool and the beach pool as well as the cantilevered hot tub. We did the hot tub around 9pm and then went for drinks. That was very nice. I loved looking over the edge at the ocean. You have to experience those at least once. We really liked the beach pool as well. I like the calypso music in the afternoons. As I stated before, we liked hanging out in the Solarium but found that it got too hot with no breeze coming through. We preferred the loungers on the top deck facing out to sea for just relaxing. It is a bit windy, but very nice. We had no trouble finding loungers on sea days. I suppose if you have to be right next to the pool, it would be more of an issue, but that wasn't important to us. The only chair hogging I noticed was on the big wicker couches in the Solarium.

Thanks for putting the reveiw together. My DW and I had lunch at Labadee with you and your family. It was nice to meet you guys. Reading your review is like reliving the cruise. Some advice for Labadee take some cash and tip the locals for setting up your beach chairs. Haiti is one of the poorest counties in the world. Thanks again and looking foward to the rest of the review.

Ron

PS I forgot to mention when we met that I am a big Pirate fan. I noticed that your son was wearing a Phillies hat.

Yes I remember! It was lovely having lunch with you. Yes, you are absolutely right about tipping the locals. And yes, my son is a Phillies fan. My husband however is all about the Cubs. He grew up in Chicago. He has managed to get my son on board with the Bears and Blackhawks but not baseball. My son does like the Flyers as well. Thanks for reading the review. There will be lots more pics at the end.

LABADEE, HAITI

We enjoyed Labadee very much. We did parasailing and we purchased an hour for the kids to play in the Arawak Water Park in the afternoon. Parasailing was amazing! We had fabulous guides and though the water was very choppy, no one on our excursion had any issues with it. You do need to sign a release once you get there. The view from up there is breathtaking and it's so peaceful. The excursion takes about an hour and a half I think, maybe two, but your ride is only about 5-7 minutes. It's well worth it in my opinion. We did tip the tour operators. After that we went to the beach where the waterpark is and settled it. It's a bit of a walk, but not bad really. If the heat is an issue, you might want to take the trolley. There are locals who are available to get you loungers and tents for shade. Those are complimentary, but you do tip them for setting then up for you. The lunch was fine. No real complaints. It's certainly not what you would get on the ship, nor does it compare to the DCL lunch on Castaway Cay, but we were fine with it. Really, I didn't feel the need to chow down anyway. We did a quick walk-through of the market, but not my thing. My daughter was particularly upset by the vendors. I won't do that again. We had a lovely afternoon on the beach and the kids loved the water park. I left about an hour before the family to hit the gym. We would love to try the zip line sometime, but if there were any of these three ports to just sit and look at the ocean, I think this is the one.

FALMOUTH, JAMAICA

We love, love, loved Jamaica! The shops at the port are nice and we found some fun souvenirs. I would have liked to try Margaritaville, but there wasn't time. I have to mention one vendor in the artisan's market there. My son bought two bracelets there and one fell off on our excursion. At the end of the day, my husband and I returned to see if we could purchase a replacement. She remembered us and the exact bracelet. We told her what had happened and she replaced it for free. We were so touched by her kindness that we bought another one for our daughter.

We did the CHUKKA HORSEBACK RIDE AND SWIM excursion. We had a lovely time, but I want to warn anyone who might book this. The RCCL website doesn't really tell you what to wear. We asked at Guest Services the night before (we couldn't get near the excursion desk!) and they said short over a bathing suit and flip flops would be fine. Well, yes and no. You certainly can wear that and it won't be as hot as pants and sneakers, but it is uncomfortable and actually dangerous. You can't keep your feet in the stirrups efficiently with flip flops and the rubbing against your feet and legs from the saddle and stirrups is uncomfortable. I should have known better having ridden a lot as a kid. In any case, we were fine, but I would have preferred to be in pants and sneakers. There is time to change into bathing suits for the bareback ride in the water, which was great fun by the way. Again, please remember to tip your guides. BTW, be sure to get their jerk chicken after the ride. It is fabulous!!!

COZUMEL, MEXICO

This is the port my daughter had been waiting for all week because of the dolphin swim. We purchased the Royal Dolphin swim and Manatee interaction from RCCL. I thought the price was not bad. We had a great guide that met us at the pier, called taxis for us (it's included in the cost, so you don't pay the taxi driver) accompanied us to the area of Chankanaab where we met our photographer, then met us at the entrance when we were ready to go back to the ship. There were set meeting times of 11:00, 12:00, 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 (ship's time). Again, you don't pay for the taxi ride home. The Royal Swim was a truly awesome experience. We loved every minute, especially the foot push. If you get the chance, you must do this. We had a really early excursion time and I'm glad. (8:30) That way we had lots of time to spend in the park. We went back to the ship in the last taxi group. The manatee interaction was interesting and informative and again it was amazing to be in the water and touching such a beautiful and docile creature. After that, we dried off. Oh, by the way, they do have complimentary lockers there for your stuff and you cannot bring cameras to the encounters. We went to the gift shop to look at our pictures and ended up purchasing the CD. I think it was about $200. It's worth it though because each picture is $20 and just to get a one of every shot would have brought us to nearly $200 anyway. This was an experience we will never forget and we did feel that the CD was worth the price. We attended the sea lion show and our daughter was picked to help out! She was thrilled. At the end of the show everyone can get their picture taken getting a kiss from the sea lion. (again by their photographer) We didn't purchase that picture, but I got a good enough shot from behind. We had lunch at one of the venues on the beach and it was delightful. We then rented snorkel equipment, grabbed some loungers and took turns snorkeling. I would not leave our stuff unattended. The snorkeling was great and I used our cheap point and shoot with a Dicapac underwater camera case. The case did well, but my problem was that without my glasses, I couldn't tell what I was photographing! I was shooting blind most of the time. :p All in all, we were thrilled with our time in Chankanaab. I would love to do it again.

I decided to post pictures before wrapping it up. I have a ton, but I promise I will be selective. It will probably take me a day or two to post them all (it's so tedious) then I'll wrap things up with disembarkation.

Waiting in the cruise terminal to board! The kids are still stunned. They only found out about the cruise a few hours earlier.

Hi--our son will be almost 13 on our Oasis cruise. We would like to do Hairspray that first night (we went 2 yrs ago as well) but I think the teen meeting the first night conflicts with the show times. Did you find this to be the case? My DD will only be 9, so he will be "alone" in the teen group and my hunch is it's 50/50 if he loves the teen program and wants to stay. Just don't want him missing out on the show with our family if he doesnt really hit it off at the teen center, but due to scheduling, we also want to do the show the first night. Just curious about timing and if you did the show the first night? Thanks!

Was on the same cruise- Regarding Hairspray: I had a less than ideal show time as well. I went to guest services and changed the time for the 2:30 in the afternoon one. Yes, I could have gone to Studio B and got it done, but I had something else to do at Guest Services so they did change it there.

I did watch the last 30 minutes of the opening night show- and the show was not full.

As for the teen club, I am almost certain that the kids would rather be there than the show.

We purposefully did not schedule Hairspray the first night because of the Teen 411. It's the one show we really wanted the kids to see because my husband and I saw it on Broadway and really loved it. We knew that they weren't going to want to leave the teen club to go to a show, we did it at 2:30 on the first sea day. (Originally had it that night, but RCCL changed our flowrider lessons and messed us up, so we had to juggle) My husband and I did the comedy show the first night since it's adults only. Anyway, we were right. The kids were so excited about the teen club after the first night and made lasting friends that first evening. They kind of formed groups and basically hung out with the same kids all week. BTW, I believe the teen club is 12-17, so I don't think that your 9 year old will be in that group. You might want to check on that. They have so many activities, you never know. He might be really excited about hanging out in the club. Have a great trip!

The first of many beautiful sunsets.

Mini putt. The zip line is to the left. I took this while waiting for husband and daughter to zip!

Central Park at night. By far my favorite neighborhood and I loved that our cabin was on the same deck just a few feet away. We would cut through to get just about anywhere and I loved being able to pop into park café for a coffee or a snack.

Royal Promenade. Easily the busiest and nearly noisiest place on the ship. It kind of reminded me of being in the King of Prussia Mall!

Rising Tide Bar as seen from the Royal Promenade. Loved the fountain show underneath. We did this bar twice and enjoyed it very much. For my husband, it was also one of the best martinis on the ship. I had their signature blue martini. It was good, but a little too sweet.

This looked like a very hopping bar most nights with live entertainment. But we never got in there. Just not enough time to do everything!
