Looking into a jan 2014 cruise, from manaus, brazil to ft. Lauderdale. Would like to fly in two days early, so we get to explore Manaus. Any hints on affordable hotels near port, $100. Per night or less? Celebrating 50 th wedding anniversary. Any clues as what to do and see before boarding ship? Thanks.

You might consider doing a b2b FLL to Manaus to FLL. When we did it, the first leg ended with an overnight and the second started with one. So we had three days or so in Manaus. Sailing back to FLL is so much nicer than flying.

Last time I heard is that Princess flies everybody into Manaus from Fort Lauderdale and flies the other passengers back to Fort lauderdale.

You might consider doing a b2b FLL to Manaus to FLL. When we did it, the first leg ended with an overnight and the second started with one. So we had three days or so in Manaus. Sailing back to FLL is so much nicer than flying.

 

 

Just saw a nonstop flight from Manaus to Miami on American Airlines that takes only 5 hrs and costs $736/pp. Then you can easily catch a shuttle to FLL if you had left your car there. That's alot cheaper and quicker than cruising back to FLL!

Be sure to go to the Opera house while in Manaus. Beautiful. An excursion back the Rio Negro is definitely worth it. We took a private excursion with two other couples and thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially the pink dolphins. Saw Caimen, macaws, beautiful butterflies, lots of birds and lots of monkies.

Manaus is a very busy and noisy city. It has an interesting opera house and an extremely busy market next to the river with its floating docks. Check tripadvisor to see whether any of the downtown hotels are acceptable. I did not see one in walking distance to the dock.

 

We thought that the river cruise on a typical river boat to a floating village and the meeting of the waters (Rio Negro and Amazon) was the best part of Manaus. I also loved the market.

Rates vary widely from season to season, date to date. What are your travel dates? Cruise on Jan. 6? That's right after the prime New Years season, so why not at the peak, it won't be inexpensive for hotels. If you can get one of the hotels rated highest on TA for that price (and you may), go for it. Safety and comfort should, of course, be paramount. I stayed at the Hotel Tropical and enjoyed it, but that was 20 years ago, when it was THE upscale hotel in town. Now there are several others. I don't know what the Tropical is like now, but I think it'd be above your budget.

 

There are lots of guide books on Manaus. You can even purchased and download specific chapters from the Lonely Planet guidebook on Brazil (http://www.lonelyplanet.com). Be prepared for very warm, and often wet, weather.

 

Be sure to start taking anti-malarial prophylaxis before you leave home. http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/brazil You should also read up on dengue fever, which is transmitted by a specific type of mosquito. There's no vaccine, but it's usually easily treatable if done as soon as symptoms appear (assuming it's the usual strain, and not the stronger--- but more rare-- hemorrhagic version). The ship's doctor should be well versed on what to do, but you should know what symptoms to look out for.
