Confused about non refundable obc 3% casino

Am I understanding correctly that I can pay 3% and have my non refundable obc put on my casino card, I realize that if this is in fact an option that I probably have to play it all, in others words I can't just put it in a slot machine and then cash it out, I can only cash out winnings over the initial amount that was put on my casino card. I have a feeling I am misunderstanding this option but I am hoping it can be done, anyone done this? Thanks for your help.

While I'm not 100% sure about using non-refundable OBC, I know that when you withdraw funds from your onboard account at the casino, you are given cash, not credit on your casino card (On the Breakaway you can do either, but I see you are sailing on the Sun next - the Breakaway works either by getting cash for the 3% fee or downloading directly onto your card from your account right at a slot machine). Here's exactly how it goes - you go to the casino cashier, and request funds (for example $100). They give you a charge slip to sign, for $100 plus $3 fee, for a total of $103, which is charged against your on board account. They then hand you a receipt and $100 in cash (or chips if that's what you want). I would suspect that it would be the same when using non-refundable OBC. Hope this helps!

Thanks fishbait17. I am hoping someone reads this that has actually done it before but you have given me hope. It seems that if I can get cash for 3% then I might as well not carry much cash and just get it at the casino as I get 2% pts on my ncl cr card. We will need cash for our excursions we have planned that only accept cash, thanks for letting me know that I can get cash that way.

If you will be needing more than $150 in cash, it will be cheaper to use the onboard ATM, which charges roughly $5-6 for each withdrawal - take it all out at once. Well worth it even without after you account for the double points on your NCL credit card.

You are not allowed to use any OBC for the casino.

You can get cash from the casino cashier and charge that to your cabin - the charge will include the 3% surcharge.

I foolishly purchased a large amount of OBC for one of my NCL cruises and then was told I could not use it for the casino. I explained that this was not clear made clear to me when I purchased the OBC and after a lot of discussions they did let me use it for the casino.

I have never done that again. I now just get cash from the casino cashier, sing the voucher and pay the 3%.

Using the ATM on board is another option but I find the ATM is out of order a lot so wouldn't depend on that.

The Breakaway does allow you to charge your cabin with $$$ directly from a slot machine - you can then download whatever amount you want and play it on that machine - you can also upload any wnnings or unplayed amount and move to another machine. There is no extra charge for these transactions.

Have fun on your cruise. Marisa

Thanks for the info, I am disappointed to hear this but good to know, I guess we will have to figure out how to spend obc another way, we are not big drinkers and bring our own favorite wine with us, we are planning on eating at a specialty restaurant and of course have the corkage fees, I was planning on buying a future cruise credit, that will add another 100. obc to the obc we already have, I guess it is not such a bad problem to have!!

Yes, but it will also consume $150 of your existing OBC too.

Why not buy 2? That takes care of $300 of OBC.

Actually when you purchase your future cruise credit, you will not gain another $100. Your OBC will go down by $150. It's just a paperwork shuffle. You buy a credit worth $250, you will see a charge for $250 and at the same time a $100 credit, so your account will drop $150.

Eat a few extra meals in the specialty restaurants and it will all be gone!!!:D

I'm confused. I've never purchased OBC, so my assumptions may be incorrect, but isn't purchased OBC refundable? If that is so, it should be usable for anything on board, including daily service charges and the casino. Is your issue really with the 3% surcharge rather than using the OBC per se? In other words you would be able to withdraw money in the casino, which would be charged to your on board account, which would be be paid from your OBC...but with a 3% surcharge added on, rather being allowed to use it without a surcharge?

For that matter in the past passengers were able to withdraw money from the casino that even drew down the nonrefundable OBC, but with the 3% surcharge. I'm hoping I can still do this on my upcoming b2b (or almost b2b but on 2 different ships) in two weeks as I have a fairly substantial amount of nonrefundable OBC on both cruises. Can anyone confirm directly from very recent experience whether you can still withdraw money from the casino that will draw down the nonrefundable OBC, but subject to the 3% surcharge?

It's very simple and I have done it many times on many ships. If you have OBC, either non-refundable or refundable, go to the casino cashier. Tell them you would like to withdraw some cash on your account. You can get between $100 and $2000 per day. They will fill out a form that you will sign and initial in two different places and hand you the cash.

For example your ship account will show a charge of $100 and then $3 for a $100 cash withdrawl. This $103 will be deducted from ANY OBC you might have on our account. That is all there is to it.

Thanks. I was confused by the other poster's statement about not being able to withdraw against purchased OBC, which led me to think the process had somehow changed.

It's non-refundable, and can't be used for tips....but that's it. It can be used for anything else.

Somebody please corroborate.

I think using the term "withdrawing" causes confusion. If you get cash from the casino, don't think of it as a withdrawal from your account, but rather think of it as a charge to your account. In the end you have charges and credits. Getting cash is just a charge to the account. The OBC is like a pre-payment on your credit card, you just charge against it. Getting cash from the casino is like a cash advance.

We learned after buying a large amount of OBC (at least on the Gem), in order to take the money out from the cashier at the casino, you must have a credit card (or debit card) associated with your onboard account. This didn't take too much time to do, but we assumed (never assume!) with almost 2K in OBC we would be all set.
