JMG Posted September 22, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 22, 2013 Check to see if there is a roll call and ask your question there. It has been quite a while since we did NYE cruises but they did tweak the formal night so that it fell on NYE. At that time, they did not add another formal night. DonnaK Posted September 22, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 22, 2013 We did this cruise on Explorer for New Years 2012. The formal nights were on New Years Eve (which is not necessarily the typical 2nd night of the cruise) and on the 6th night. It was a great experience - the party on the Promenade was reminiscent of being at Times Square. The ship was still decorated for Christmas (until January 2nd, which all the decorations suddenly disappeared overnight!). However, it was definitely a cold weather cruise. Only two days were conducive to being outdoors. The outdoor decks had to be closed on some of the days due to high winds and ocean spray. The pools were unusable for all but those two days, as was sitting out on the pool deck. So, people were drawn inward, and there really was not enough fun activities planned to keep the people occupied (I blame this on the cruise director, who was very ineffective - he will not be on your New Years sailing and you shouldn't have this issue). You'll still have an enjoyable cruise if you go into it with reasonable expectations - it will likely be cold and you'll spend more time than usual indoors. Bring books, puzzles, board games, electronic handheld games, knitting, etc. Whatever you need to keep yourself busy when you can't sit outside, as on other cruises. Plan to participate in more activities, and attend more events, than you ordinarily would. We still LOVED this cruise despite the weather and the crappy itinerary, and would definitely do a winter (or New Year's) cruise from Cape Liberty again in the future.
