sapper1 Posted October 9, 2013 #26 Share Posted October 9, 2013 It is ok to wear white slacks and white shoes.....as long as you also have a white belt. Preferably those patent leather white loafers for men-the ones with the nice buckle on them. Very smart-especially when the slacks are hitched up as far as possible making them a little short at the bottom. LOL. My husband bought a white belt at a flea market just to bug me. Although he has never worn it, it hangs in his closet and he periodically discusses wearing it. That's when he gets "the look" so there it sits, lonely and unloved, in the closet, never destined to see the light of day. :)
FL..NC Posted October 9, 2013 #27 Share Posted October 9, 2013 White is a great color. It goes went everything. All these lovely shirts you are taking. :)
chrispb Posted October 9, 2013 #28 Share Posted October 9, 2013 We usually have such crappy summers here that my whites would never, ever be worn if I didn't wear them while I'm on hols. Pleased to say we had a pretty good summer this time and it's currently very mild so I'm happy:)

Boytjie Posted October 9, 2013 #30 Share Posted October 9, 2013 "No whites after Labor Day" is an American thing. Why would it concern anyone on a ship in the Caribbean (or anywhere else)?

OCruisers Posted October 9, 2013 #33 Share Posted October 9, 2013 Winter White is more on an ivory tone and is quite popular around Christmas here. Of course white blouses are popular anytime. Complicated thing, this fashion business isn't it?:) Agree ... Winter White is no problem for us at home either and looks quite festive for the Hollidays! Sure white blouses/sweaters year around. There's a big difference in Winter White and the Bright White we wear in the summer. ;) LuLu ~~~~
mydogs Posted October 9, 2013 #34 Share Posted October 9, 2013 Here in SE FL we wear white all year. In fact I wore white jeans today. I am taking white jeans, crops and shorts on my Dec. Eurodam cruise !
serendipity1499 Posted October 9, 2013 #35 Share Posted October 9, 2013 In the Caribbean, white is appropriate year round. Had to laugh about the shoes discussion. On my first job, we had very strict dress code, eventhough I worked in an office with no out-of-company contact. Girls were even sent home for not dressing appropriately. If the deviation wasn't overly strict (too short skirt, too low blouse), you had a note posted in your file. One girl had a note posted in her file over white shoes. Dark shoes were required between Labor Day and Easter. At Easter, you could were bone or tan shoes. After Memorial Day, you could wear white shoes. We considered ourselves lucky that the dress code had been loosened enough that we didn't have to wear hats and gloves to work. When I started in the Airline field we were not permitted to wear slacks..I remember when pant suits came out for ladies...There was a big hullabaloo about not being able to wear them.. Finally top mgmt agreed that if the pant suits matched we would be permitted to wear them..:D:D And God forbid if we ever tried to standby in slacks.. That too was a big No No..I had to be in a dress with pantyhose & DH & Son had to be in a suit, when we flew on our airline & other airlines.. Here in SE FL we wear white all year. In fact I wore white jeans today. I am taking white jeans, crops and shorts on my Dec. Eurodam cruise ! Still wearing white Capri's & slacks now since it's in the high 80's...We lived in the North before moving to Florida & guess I'm a bit old-fashioned..;) The no whites after labor day was so ingrained in me, that when the temp drops to the 50's & 60's I put my whites away..However, always take my white slacks & Capri's on our Caribbean cruises & will so on our Nov./Dec. cruise..:) Cheers..Betty

castellina Posted October 10, 2013 #37 Share Posted October 10, 2013 I have to admit I am gobsmacked at this thread. Is it a felony to wear white after Labor Day (not "winter" white) Ladies, get over yourselves. It is so pathetic to read about people who are afraid for some reason to wear white after a certain date. Yikes.

It is so pathetic to read about people who are afraid for some reason to wear white after a certain date. Yikes. I, too, don't understand the stigma some seem to associate with wearing white based on the date shown on the calendar. Here's a practical take on this topic found in boston.com: http://www.boston.com/business/blogs/e_word/2013/09/white_after_labor_day_really.html
sail7seas Posted October 10, 2013 #39 Share Posted October 10, 2013 Your link is an article published in 2013. Those of us who grew up 50+ years ago in Boston were taught certain traditions and customs. It's wonderful we're all flexible enough to change and adapt and evolve as we have grown. Times have changed, society's expectations and habits have changed and most assuredly dress codes in the U.S. have changed. What is accepted today is very much looser than 'back then' and that is a good thing IMO I would never mock or be critical of any society's customs and traditions. They were all founded in some basis and all of us have roots in one socity or another with all the idiosyncrazies that attach.

OCruisers Posted October 10, 2013 #47 Share Posted October 10, 2013 When sailing the Caribbean in Nov/Dec. are white pants appropriate. I know in the states white is not worn these months. To get back to your OP poster question .... We've become a bit off topic and discussing what we wear at home. Bottom Line: Everyone agrees on this .... Yes, white pants are perfectly appropriate in the Caribbean in Nov/Dec! Happily, it's always Summer there! :) LuLu ~~~~
serendipity1499 Posted October 10, 2013 #48 Share Posted October 10, 2013 I've never worn Capri's for dinner in the MDR..I always wear either a dress or slacks on Smart Casual Nights..Don't know why, as I would wear them to dinner in a nice restaurant here at home with a nice top & jacket.. Actually, some of my Capri's look better on me than slacks do, because I'm so short.. Wonder what other ladies do.. Please ladies weigh in here & tell me what you do.. Thanks..Betty
Lerin Posted October 10, 2013 #49 Share Posted October 10, 2013 Oh. My. Goodness. What decade is this? You can wear whatever color you want, whenever you want. I have a beautiful white suit that I only wear in wintertime. People tell me I look like a snow angel in it. :)
kakalina Posted October 10, 2013 #50 Share Posted October 10, 2013 Betty, I have worn capris into the MDR for lunch or the PG for that matter for lunch but not for dinner. For me, my legs tend to get cold in the evenings onboard. I see no reason why nice capris with top and little jacket could not be worn on smart casual evenings.
