newlaxfan Posted October 24, 2013 #26 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I'm up for meeting interesting couples, period. I've had a great time with same sex couples on past cruises with Celebrity. I feel like unless you're interested in starting a sexual relationship with someone, their sexual orientation doesn't matter one way or the other, known what I mean? Well said! I feel the same! Boytjie Posted October 24, 2013 #27 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I have been only on gay charters on HAL ships so my experience is vastly different. But from a HAL Cruise Critic board perspective I have found the people here to be be welcoming and accepting. Sure, there are always exceptions, but I think from what I have read here that you will be OK on a regular HAL cruise.
Cqis Posted October 24, 2013 #28 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I thought that some people were being mean and nasty to me. Found out that they were just mean and nasty people to everyone. If you would have observed more, you would have realized that They were a waste of Your time. Hope you are on my cruise, I would love to have conversation , and a few drinks. comfortcove Posted October 24, 2013 #29 Share Posted October 24, 2013 Really, Cruiser Craig? Is this a joke? I cannot imagine it is true, really. Enjoy your cruise, and contact security if you experience any harassment whatsoever.
celle Posted October 24, 2013 #30 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I just don't get the prejudice. I don't automatically think when I see two people of the same sex travelling together that they are gay. Sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't. Whatever, it's none of my business what happens in their bedroom/stateroom, just as it it none of their business what happens in mine. DH and I would welcome the OP and partner on any cruise. It's always interesting talking to people from different places.
shrimp56 Posted October 24, 2013 #31 Share Posted October 24, 2013 On our last cruise there were several same sex partners in our CC meet and greet. We ending up spending time with two of them. Our whole CC Meet and Greet was very welcoming and responsive to them.
Rare Keith1010 Posted October 24, 2013 #32 Share Posted October 24, 2013 Part of what we enjoy about cruising is meeting people. We see people as who they are: people. Keith
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 24, 2013 #33 Share Posted October 24, 2013 Go and have fun!! It doesn't make any difference to us whether we meet and talk with people of the same sex partners or not. We enjoy meeting new people and hearing about their adventures.
trixiee Posted October 24, 2013 #34 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I've been to several places, on several group excursions, week -long escorted trips, etc., and as a straight person, I was in the minority. Whether you are straight or gay makes no difference to me. Just don't engage in activities in public, that belong in the bedroom :p... straight or gay, young or old, black, white, yellow, red, brown or blue, doesn't matter one whit to me! :D People are people! Rare Crazy For Cats Posted October 24, 2013 #35 Share Posted October 24, 2013 Hi Craig, my husband and I have cruised several times on HAL and never ran into an issue with another passenger. We have always found a few people to meet up with at various points of the day, usually happy hour or dinner, to chat and hear about each other's day. I'm sure that you will have a good time. sapper1 Posted October 24, 2013 #36 Share Posted October 24, 2013 Coming from a small city in a somewhat insular area of the country, we honestly had never had any personal experience with gay couples. We just didn't know any. We went on a recent cruise and were assigned a table with a gay male couple---just the four of us. It was a long cruise and we didn't know what we would talk about. As the days wore on we found ourselves looking forward to dinner time and our very enjoyable dinner conversations. These guys were a lot of fun and we grew to like them very much. We often socialized with them around the ship and on the last night there were hugs all around. I told my husband that I thought the experience had made us better people with a greater understanding. Rare puppycanducruise Posted October 24, 2013 #37 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I like talking to people. I don't care if you're gay or straight - I just hope you're not boring. Go out and have a great cruise.
Irish Eyes Are Sailing Posted October 24, 2013 #38 Share Posted October 24, 2013 A person's sexual orientation does not affect my attitude towards them at all. Gay or straight, it is the person/personality that counts. I enjoy talking to everyone out there........I try to be nice to everyone and hope, in return, they are nice to me. Discrimination in any form is not socially acceptable in my book. OP, I am sorry you felt the need to start this thread because some folks don't treat you nicely. It's not fair, I agree. I feel the world is slowly changing and someday you won't feel discriminated against anymore. I hope it happens soon! :)
mamaofami Posted October 24, 2013 #39 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I'm sorry you had such a bad prior experience that you even had to ask this question. Personally, if you've been together for 33 years, you should just shrug your shoulders and enjoy. Life is too short to worry about what other people think. Join your roll call and you'll meet some interesting people before you leave home.
Rare kazu Posted October 24, 2013 #40 Share Posted October 24, 2013 It's sad that you need to post this and ask. In all my cruises, I have only seen one same sex couple treated poorly - not by the roll call but by the table they were seated with. I advised them to speak to the dining room manager and get a new table - and, in fact, said we would be happy to have them join us if it could be arranged. Unfortunately some people are still prejudiced but overall, I find most people don't care. (we don't). On all the roll calls I have been on and meet and greets I have not seen any discrimination. Everyone is anxious to meet people. Sign up for your roll call and meet your fellow cruisers. You may make some lasting friends. You would certainly be welcome on any of ours:D
Jean1946 Posted October 24, 2013 #41 Share Posted October 24, 2013 One of the best cruises we've ever been on was meeting up with a group of 6 or 8 same sex couples. We had such a good time. The mix was interesting though, two cousins with their partners, a father and son with their partners, and it just went on and on. That cruise we participated in so many activities that we usually didn't do. Now, trivia is one of the things we really look forward to, as well as Karaoke because we met those guys and was included in their "group." Generally my husband and I just take it easy and do our own thing, but we learned how to really have a good time.
sail7seas Posted October 24, 2013 #42 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I'm proud to be from Massachusetts....... the first U.S. state to vote gay marriage legal. :) That was a vote of the PEOPLE, not the politicians.
esimon Posted October 24, 2013 #43 Share Posted October 24, 2013 This is an old thread -- My feelings -- Don't care if you are same sex or just a couple living together -- Don't want PDAs from people --- Don't flaunt it and we'll get along fine. Interesting that people who do things out of the norm (sorry, I'm conservative ) like same sex or fushia hair don't want people to look -- Have a son that lives gay and does drag -- would give my life for him and maybe you so I'm not homophobic - don't go there with me -- We can agree to disagree but wouldn't mind having dinner with you at all Enjoy your next cruise and don't look for problems - move on if you have them
Rare 1of4 Posted October 24, 2013 #44 Share Posted October 24, 2013 We have no use for predjudice of any kind. We try to bring up our children to understand we are all the same with different points of view, experiences and cultures. Everyone is free (in our nation) to believe what they want and who are we to judge. We travel with our children to show them how we do it at home is not the only "right" way; to expose them to other experiences. My husband worked for the law firm that made gay marriage legal in Ontario and so I hope that says it all. No judgement here and we would welcome speaking to everyone on a cruise who wishes to speak to a family including children. Life is too short to worry about what other people think when you aren't doing anything illegal, permanent and doesn't hurt anybody else. It took me to 50 years of age to fully understand that and I am much happier now. I hope you go and enjoy every aspect of the cruise YOU CHOOSE to participate in. eddieg07410 Posted October 24, 2013 #45 Share Posted October 24, 2013 Frankly, I am a little surprised you've experienced such a reception. I concur with the other poster who cruises are for meeting different and diverse people. If you feel otherwise you shouldn't be cruising. As long as people don't flaunt their sexuality I am perfectly OKay. But I feel that way about heterosexual couples as well.
amster65 Posted October 24, 2013 #46 Share Posted October 24, 2013 My wife and I got dumped by one of our gay friends because she assistant manages the building he lives in and he did not like the way things were run, but I won't hold that against you Craig.:D
hpf Posted October 24, 2013 #47 Share Posted October 24, 2013 This is an old thread -- I'm sorry, but this is not an old thread. Did you not look to see when the OP posted this. YESTERDAY. To the OP I'm sorry you were treated badly but forget those people and go and enjoy your cruise. I find that on nearly every cruise there is someone who likes to gripe & complain about something or someone. However in a ship full of passengers and crew they are few and we ignore them. No one should feel that they are not worthy of our time, be they, gay, black, brown or even "green", :D;) Helen :)
esimon Posted October 24, 2013 #48 Share Posted October 24, 2013 No one should feel that they are not worthy of our time, be they, gay, black, brown or even "green", does that mean people who can't tell when the thread starts :p and conservatives??? lol
kakalina Posted October 24, 2013 #49 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I find it amazing that you can still experience such blatant homophobic behavior anywhere. Of course, I still find it amazing that anyone cares about what other people do in their lives. Go - have fun; ignore the ignorant, biased and often uneducated ones you may meet. Chances are they won't be on your cruise or in your roll call. I was a military brat (Dad was in for 30 yrs.) and was taught the only thing in life that mattered was rank! Not color or religion or anything else - just rank. That philosophy has brought me a lot of joy in the friends in my life.
frankc98376 Posted October 24, 2013 #50 Share Posted October 24, 2013 My husband and I were married in the Oosterdam in May. Apart from the wedding snafus from HAL (many here already know that story) our fellow passengers were GREAT. Word got around the ship fast that we had gotten married and we were constantly being stopped in hallways, lounges, even the hydrotherapy pool by people congratulating us or wanting a picture with us. Wine appeared at our table several times in the Pinnacle, as did drinks at the bars. We had only two interactions with people that were less than positive- both we still laugh about. For the most part most of the crew were 100% supportive.
