gluvsgames Posted December 7, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 7, 2013 Can we cash travelers check on the Celebrity Summit? Does anyone know what percentage they charge?
CHEZMARYLOU Posted December 7, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 7, 2013 You can cash the travel checks at Guest Relations. They don't charge a fee for US currency. Mary Lou
Smiles3usa Posted December 7, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 7, 2013 Wow! Do they still sell travels' checks? Who knew? With the debit ATM cards, I thought travelers' cheques had outlived their usefulness.

Rare Fogtownrog Posted December 7, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 7, 2013 Amazing....yeah, there are still travel checks in the world...at my company they are offered as incentive gifts for doing a good job. We can redeem points for merchandise, gift cards or travelers checks. I cashed travelers checks at Guest Relations (often a line) and at the Casino. justcrusn Posted December 7, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 7, 2013 Well, we do! our bank doesnt charge for them, and the ship doesnt charge to cash them. if we want to take say $1000 in CASH on a cruise, for whatever, we take $500 cash and $500 in T.C. We spend the cash down first, when it gets low we start cashing the checks. I'm sure there are plenty of atm fans that will scoff, but it works for us and its safe and secure. Rare Azulann Posted December 7, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 7, 2013 I have redeemed the points connected to my AE credit card for TC. I cashed them at guest relations for USD.
WpgCruise Posted December 7, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 7, 2013 Anybody who scoffs at traveler's checks has never had the opportunity of standing in front of an A.T.M. that does not work. Traveler's checks may not be cutting edge but they are dependable.
4774Papa Posted December 7, 2013 #9 Share Posted December 7, 2013 Anybody who scoffs at traveler's checks has never had the opportunity of standing in front of an A.T.M. that does not work. Traveler's checks may not be cutting edge but they are dependable. I haven't had a bad ATM experience. It has been about 20 years since I used traveler's checks and there was a cost to purchase them as well as a cost to cash them. Perhaps some banks offer no fee TCs, that would mitigate one negative. Celebrity may not charge to cash TCs, but foreign banks and hotels do charge (at least they did 20 years ago). According to American Express: "Is there a fee to purchase Travellers Cheques? Fees vary from establishment to establishment. Some may charge a nominal fee, while others offer Travellers Cheques fee free as a service to their customers." We usually carry about $500 in cash, including some foreign currency, as well as rely on our ATM exchanges, which gives us about the best exchange rates. I doubt that TCs get as good an exchange rate at a bank or hotel, when foreign currency is purchased. I suppose everyone has a comfort level and I can't deny that TCs are one secure way to fund your trip. Still, I will stick to my solution.
davekathy Posted December 8, 2013 #10 Share Posted December 8, 2013 Can we cash travelers check on the Celebrity Summit? Does anyone know what percentage they charge? We still take Travelers Checks. No charge from my Credit Union. I cash them at Guest services on the ship with no charge or hassle. We only use cash in the ports. No ATM fees. CHEZMARYLOU Posted December 8, 2013 #11 Share Posted December 8, 2013 We don't pay for Travel Checks from our bank and I don't have to worry about having my debit card, that can also be used as a credit card, stolen or lost. We mostly use credit cards but there are time when we need cash for some purchases or tips. Amazingly, Travel Checks work just fine. kitty9 Posted December 8, 2013 #12 Share Posted December 8, 2013 They may be dependable, but they are being accepted by fewer and fewer merchants. On our last European cruise, my friend brought TC's with him and he had problems using them in a lot of places.
C Cruise Dude Posted December 8, 2013 #13 Share Posted December 8, 2013 (edited) Wow. someone still uses traveler's checks! LOL, I do. I hate to carry a lot of cash. If you loose the travelers checks you get it back. Wow! Do they still sell travels' checks? Who knew? With the debit ATM cards, I thought travelers' cheques had outlived their usefulness. They are hard to come by. I get them from my credit union, my bank informed me that they still have them (both for a fee). "They may be dependable, but they are being accepted by fewer and fewer merchants. On our last European cruise, my friend brought TC's with him and he had problems using them in a lot of places. " That is why I cash them on the ship. Edited December 8, 2013 by C Cruise Dude add more
BosoxI Posted December 8, 2013 #14 Share Posted December 8, 2013 My wife just stumbled upon $480 worth of TCs, buried in my drawer. Guess I'll be embarrassed when I finally cash them, if I listen to some of you :)

Smiles3usa Posted December 8, 2013 #16 Share Posted December 8, 2013 Anybody who scoffs at traveler's checks has never had the opportunity of standing in front of an A.T.M. that does not work. Traveler's checks may not be cutting edge but they are dependable. Please know that I wasn't scoffing. I still remember Karl Malden doing the American Express commercial for traveler's checks. For that matter, I still remember a time when if you didn't get to the bank by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, you had no money for the weekend; there were no ATM machines. At that time, credit cards were something only for the rich! My times have changed. I have found during my travels there are far more places to get money with an ATM machine (there is ALWAYS one around -- maybe one must walk an extra block) then places willing to cash a traveler's check. People should do what they are comfortable with. Change, however, is not always a bad thing.
