alfaeric Posted December 8, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 8, 2013
Can someone please suggest a place to eat lunch in Jan? Nervous about eating off the ship (safety and getting sick)
Don't be nervous. Unless you get sick eating in towns like Ann Arbor, Ft. Lauderdale, Atlanta, etc... And since there are so many tourists, it's safe, too. The issue is more what kind of food you want.

Sunny AZ Girl Posted December 11, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 11, 2013 We are thinking of going to the Parrot Club for authentic ambiance and Puerto Rican flavor. The menu online is the dinner menu. The manager sent me the lunch menu which is more moderately priced and good for lunch. It has sandwiches in addition to authentic entrees. Here is part of the menu: Sandwiches & Wraps (till 4pm) Nuevo Cubano Sandwich o Wrap roasted pork, country ham, gruyere cheese, pickles, and mustard on a ciabatta roll or wrap 13 The Parrot Club Burger cheddar cheese, bacon, homeade steak sauce, con papitas ( fries ) 14 Crispy Chicken BLT on Brioche crispy fried chicken breast sandwich with swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato, served on a buttered brioche bun with fries 14 The Parrot Club's Veggie Wrap con mixed greens y tostones 13 Rico Cubano Burger Big 10 oz. all beef burger topped with roasted pork, ham, bacon and swiss cheese, served with fries 18 Tender Grilled Chicken Wrap avocado spread, chopped salad and crunchy plantain 12 Specialty Dishes (all day) Pork Carne Frita classic marinated pork carne frita with pickled onions, amarillos, rice n' beans and cilantro mojo 21 Caribbean Spiced Grouper pan seared mero con fresh corn and crab meat salsa fresca y batata mameya croquette 26 Pinchos de Pollo con Mofongo bbq'd chicken breast pinchos with our signature mofongo y mojo verde 19 Pan Seared Camarones con Arroz Chifa seared shrimp con peruvian style crab and chorizo stir fried rice 26 Latino Marinated Grilled Sirloin Flap Steak flavorful and juicy, sliced and served with cilantro chimichurri and potato amarillo hash 24 Mero en Papillote (healthy selection low fat - low sodium) limon scented grouper, baked en papillote con recao y red peppers, served with steamed pumpkin, potatoes and haricot vert 22 Also appetizers, salads and desserts are available - in addition to drink selelctions. But this gives you an idea. San Juan is part of the US, so subject to the same health laws as other parts of the US. You don't have to worry about getting sick at a San Juan restaurant. bouhunter Posted December 11, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 11, 2013 There is no need to worry about health or safety in Old San Juan. Enjoy:) El Patio De Sam is an option for lunch I'd recommend. There are LOTS of restaurants to choose from.
bouhunter Posted December 11, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 11, 2013
Can someone please suggest a place to eat lunch in Jan? Nervous about eating off the ship (safety and getting sick)
There is no need to worry about health or safety in Old San Juan. We LOOK FORWARD to eating off the ship there:D An option I'd recommend for lunch would be El Patio De Sam. Parrot Club is OK too, probably more expensive. It's not really any more "authentic" then anywhere else in Old San Juan. Except maybe Wendy's and Burger King:)
francelly Posted December 11, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 11, 2013 Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of USA and is regulated by the same agencies that regulate restaurants in USA. Even the water is safe to drink. In Old San Juan you are going to find plenty of authentic restaurants, I like one named Mojitos. Very nice inside and food is really good. Haven't tried the one you mentioned, but the menu looks Cuban to me. You can't go wrong with any, food in PR is very flavorful. Good luck!
Rare RachelG Posted December 11, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 11, 2013 I wouldn't worry about getting sick or safety either one more than I would worry about it at home. The Old Town is very safe to walk around in. And the food regulations, etc are the same as in the US since it is a US territory.
sail7seas Posted December 12, 2013 #9 Share Posted December 12, 2013 We've been going to San Juan for over 40 years, eaten a great many meals there and walked the streets in safety all those visits. Use the normal common sense you use anywhere. Don't wear flashy jewelry on the street, watch your pocketbook/wallet as you would anywhere, don't show a large fist full of cash. Go and enjoy. San Juan is terrific IMO
