tutuwahineLV Posted December 16, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 16, 2013  I've yet to get good biscuts at breakfast on NCL. They do so well with the other breads, i.e. Pretzle Rolls  ...yum..... but the brekkie biscuts...not so much. I love biscuts n gravy...but not on the ship. Anyone else have this complaint? Just curious
loopy Posted December 16, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 16, 2013 I was just on the Jewel and they were okay. I wouldn't say just awesome but a little hard but was fine smothered in gravy. But then I don't expect too much with mass produced food. Hopefully you just had a bad batch.
Maxsam Posted December 16, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 16, 2013 I agree, biscuits were just ok. They were hard. Kind of had a little sweet taste to them and did not compliment the sausage gravy.
momoftwinteens Posted December 16, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 16, 2013 We had biscuits just about every morning with butter and strawberry jam when we were on the Dawn. My niece said they were very close to her mother's biscuits and I thought they were wonderful. Guess it depends on what you plan on putting on them. I wasn't brought up on biscuits and gravy, just biscuits and jam.
polySeraph Posted December 16, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 16, 2013 They must get the biscuit mix from the same distributor that supplies them with that fake-maple pancake syrup.
loopy Posted December 16, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 16, 2013 They must get the biscuit mix from the same distributor that supplies them with that fake-maple pancake syrup. I don't normally use maple syrup since I am diabetic but I heard it wasn't bad on the Jewel last month. But..I was impressed they carry the Smuckers sugar free syrup made with Splenda (I believe). It is very good and doesn't taste diet at all. Might want to try it if you find their syrup taste funny.
Cubechick Posted December 16, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 16, 2013 I agree. The biscuits have been hard little hockey pucks on every ship we've been on. It is odd considering how wonderful the rest of the bread products are!
Barb Nahoumi Posted December 16, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 16, 2013 Maybe they need to get KofC's biscuit recipe.
kcwingwalker Posted December 16, 2013 #9 Share Posted December 16, 2013 Never had a problem with the biscuits
weltek Posted December 17, 2013 #10 Share Posted December 17, 2013 I agree. 75% of my sailings had biscuits hard as a rock. The other 25% were softer and passable. Biscuits and gravy are something NCL has never done well, IMHO.
luddite Posted December 17, 2013 #11 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Because the guys making biscuits aren't from the South, likely have never had a good biscuit and possibly are not familiar with baking powder. The bagels on a cruise ship are best described as really awful donuts. Icky biscuits isn't the only thing they don't do well.
debnjoe1438 Posted December 17, 2013 #12 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Never tried the biscuits on any ships. After this, I may keep it that way :D
tutuwahineLV Posted December 17, 2013 Author #13 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Good Idea Debnjoe, they are sub par at best. True Luddite, but receipes are easy to follow, and they certainly need a new receipe..... Barb, that would be an excellent idea, I'd even be happy if they'd use the Pillsbury frozen ones....just pop em in the oven for 10-12 min....easy peasy and a vast improvement to what they've been serving. :o
Ilovesailing Posted December 17, 2013 #14 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Yes just what we need is a low cal breakfast.
mjkacmom Posted December 17, 2013 #15 Share Posted December 17, 2013 They are best when served fresh - on a buffet, they are sitting out for a while.
mpk218 Posted December 17, 2013 #16 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Cold butter !!! Cant make a decent biscuit with out cold butter .. Im sure they use a mix like Bisquick or something equally devastating ;)
njitalian76 Posted December 17, 2013 #17 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Really people? It's a biscuit. Go have cocktail and enjoy the cruise!
fergusonvt Posted December 17, 2013 #18 Share Posted December 17, 2013 I don't think I've ever tried them. They wouldn't be my first choice for breakfast but being from the North East they aren't really a regional food here. I agree all the other breads are good though. jrsegrl Posted December 17, 2013 #19 Share Posted December 17, 2013 I started using a croissant instead of the biscuit with the gravy. It worked.

L3GWG Posted December 17, 2013 #23 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Really a topic about biscuits. Eat something else if you doing like for goodness sake Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
njitalian76 Posted December 17, 2013 #24 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Agreed. Also they could use softer toilet paper. I always bring a roll or two when I go... Also baby wipes don't hurt either :)
sdmike Posted December 18, 2013 #25 Share Posted December 18, 2013 (edited) Really a topic about biscuits. Eat something else if you doing like for goodness sake Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app Oh, lighten up. It's nice to talk about something other than smoking, taking water/soda on board, or tipping :) Edited December 18, 2013 by sdmike
