Car rental from cruise terminal in Greenock?

Recommended Posts

Looks like you can book with Avis or National in Greenock. If using a UK search engine try car hire rather than car rental - this might help. G.

Hi msg_girl,

Mhh, I found those onlline as well, but can`t go through with the hiring. I guess all they have in Greenock are outposts from their locations in Glasgow. Avis is operating out of a local hotel and national is supposed to be situated at the pier..enterprise is doing something too....but so far, no replies from any of them...Bummer. I also found a local truck rental...but I really want a car...not a truck!

Thanks,

Stef

We rented last year through Avis with pickup at the Tontine Hotel (http://www.avis.co.uk/CarHire/Europe/United-Kingdom/Scotland/Greenock/Greenock).

Very easy to get to; leave the Cruise Terminal onto Patrick St and turn right. Walk to the traffic lights (around 100 yards) cross the road and head straight up the hill to the next set of lights. (Around 200 yards) Turn right onto Union St and the Tontine hotel is around 100 yards on your right.

Here's an extended thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1759389&highlight=greenock+rental+car

And here's an excerpt from our trip report about our day in Greenock:

We’re on our way around 9:00. 1st stop is Doune Castle, arriving around 10:30. This is the castle where parts of Monty Python and The Holy Grail were filmed. It was a very cool castle and not crowded since this is not on any of the ship excursions. This castle is also included as part of the Explorer Pass. We spend about an hour here and then head up to Stirling Castle. We tour around for a couple of hours and then stop at the nearby Portcullis pub for a pint. On our way back to the ship, we stop in the quaint little village of Buchlyvie. We visit the pottery shop (I bought a very nice little vase) and get a pint at The Buchlyvie Inn. Very interesting talking to the locals who were there. We head back into Greenock, gas the car, and drop it at the hotel. Stop at the Hole in the Wa’ pub and then walk back to the boat. On just before 5:30.

Hi Stef, we docked Greenock a couple of years ago but had a private tour booked. However, I did find this info from someone that lives in Greenock:

http://www.avis.co.uk/CarHire/Europe/United-Kingdom/Scotland/Greenock/Greenock

She said there is an Avis agency in Greenock Tontine Hotel. See previous poster's info also.

Here is a website that have volunteers give free tours in Greenock.

Thanks Mrs Booboo and cruisingmimi,

Yes, I think Avis is the only way. I heard of some people who hired at the Tontine hotel...just that it doesn't seem possible to book this online...It tells me this branch is closed EVERY day of the week. Mhhh...I hope they still offer this service. An email to their service team is left hanging in the air for over a week now. I might have to call them by phone...Ahrgh, scottish accent...I hope I can handle it. But who to call--- the Tontine hotel or one of the Glasgow Avis stations and if so which one? Sigh! I NEED that car! Where we want to go there is no public transport or tour bus headed to. Thanks for the help!

Hi Jim,

we want to hike up Ben A'an. The only way to get to the trail is by car. The views of Loch Katrin and Loch Achray are supposed to be very nice. Plus we'd get to enjoy the Trossachs away from the more touristy Loch Lomond. Have you ever hiked that trail? We'll be there on August 19th...a tuesday.

:DLol -- if you feel like it, let's hike up together...we could pay you for riding along in your car instead of a rental one and of course would pay the gas as well. But I think the trail is a little strenuous, especially the last part to the summit is supposed to be quite a climb.

Thanks for checking the rental car situation --- that's so nice of you!

Hi Stef, I can't find any car hire available in Greenock there is not a demand for it. Both my wife and I Are retired and I am definitely not a hiker but I we would be quite happy to take you to the Trossachs during your day in Greenock depending on how many are in your party.I am not looking for payment for my time as I am not a tour guide but only a fellow cruiser, a contribution for the fuel would be acceptable. My e-mail is jim@sanjam.net if you wish to contact me.

But I'd feel bad stealing your time if you're not equally into hiking that trail as we are. I'll try to call the Glasgow companies and get a car sent down to Greenock...There just has to be a way!

Hi Stef. If you wish to try for a hire car search for hire car companies in the Paisley area this will include companies who are situated at Glasgow Airport, I have listed some of the better known ones below.I spoke to the Tontine Hotel in Greenock who stated that they have not had Avis Hire Cars at their premises for some time, but he did say that in the past Avis had operated a booth at Clydeport Cruise Terminal when the bigger ships called so it might be worth trying them be e-mail.

On the A8 in particular can be slowed up by traffic accidents and/roadworks.There are a couple of routes you can use to access the area you wish to visit. One route is by using the motorway system (A8 -M8-M80-M9- A84)and the other by slower A class Roads. Hi Stef

We are on the same cruise -your posts have been most helpful and JIM, you are a star, thanks for all the info, although I must say the car hire companies do not make it easy...we want to hire a car and walk where William Wallace and Rob Roy walked, see Stirling Castle and the hairy Scottish Coooos...

Linda (we are a family of 3 so hiring a car is very cost and time effective)

Hi cruiseKat03

I believe Steffi used Enterprise car rental who picked her up at Greenock cruise terminal and took her to their Office at Paisley to uplift the hire car and then the reverse at end of hire.

Maybe worth contacting them, do enjoy your visit to Scotland.
