skeeter195 Posted January 22, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 22, 2014 We will be on the Gem in 2 weeks and do not want to miss the "really good" things. What shows are good, what restaurants, parties, activities, etc? We were on the Breakaway in October and were glad that we saw things like ROA, Cirque, Le Bistro and Moderno. I know that you don't have to reserve shows like on the breakaway, but what should we plan for. Thanks

spidybabe Posted January 22, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 22, 2014 Just off the gem and have sailed her many times...great ship....but this last vacation we REALLY needed just to relax, so we didn't do too much. But here goes.... Lunch - Grand Pacific(MDR) when embarking (they will try to send you to buffet) nicer in MDR Dinner first night - back to MDR for lobster tail night. Order doubles. Food was very good in the MDR this past trip Breakfasts - great outdoors. Aft on 12. Mostly everything buffet has...less crowded, and you can also walk to buffet. Beautiful views Blue lagoon- great munchie foods. 24 hours Room service was good, quick, but limited Any show in theater. Cast production shows-OK. Everything else GREAT. Don't miss the acrobats! Also the second to last night(farewell show) & last night (ending of the show) Didn't do any parties this trip- but white hot party always good as well as pool parties. Fun in Bliss lounge every night Any lounge/atrium music. All great Anything Dan Dan-cruise director does. He very. Very funny Second city events Last night----the quest. Very very Very funny STUDY THE FREESTYLE DALIES. Although they look the same everyday there ARE some changes. Some speciality restaurants opened for lunch only last day....chocolate buffet not listed as event, but under food ( even though we know they have it, we almost missed it) ... CHECK that freestyle!!!!! Bring highlighter to mark off events you are interested in, bring magnets to hang reminders--the walls are metal Feel free to ask anything else Safe sailing Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app
johnsak123 Posted January 22, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 22, 2014 I really enjoyed the Rebecca and Donavan show. Could have enjoyed it more without the singing but it was pretty cool. Took a behind the scenes tour which was great. Especially enjoyed la cucina contrary to the moans and groans of my friends when I wanted to take them there. Cagneys was delish and save room for dessert. Went to le bistro twice. Had the beef for two. it was spectacular. first night had lamb chops not the best but not bad. Moderno is good too yet not as good as last year Enjoyed a few of the trivia games and dancing with the gem stars although judges were boring and not funny but one of my crew was dancing. Bowling was fun and gambling sucked because I lost. No matter what you do you will find joy in it as long as you look for it. Enjoy!!
skeeter195 Posted January 22, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted January 22, 2014 Thanks for the replies. I think we will like the Gem more than the Breakaway because we like to go with the flow. To much pre planning on the Breakaway. How is the show the first night, worth seeing? One more thing, I really like poker in the casino. How are the poker tournaments and does anyone know what the entry fees are?
youngestof9 Posted January 22, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 22, 2014 I loved listening to Leo. There was great music around the ship. And I love the Caribbean band by the pool.

I have seen Rebecca and Donovan twice on the Jewel (prior to Donovan's singing:rolleyes:) They were excellent! This October I saw them on the Sun...great show as always, but I agree about Donovan's singing!
kmc86 Posted January 22, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 22, 2014 Just off gem.... Shows were all good especially chip romero. Magician/ comedian... White hot party very lively. Great group of passengers quest party hilarious but adult only.... Great outdoors nice place to relax and have a snack or ice cream. Dan dAn cruise director so funny and surprised all with great singing voice. Behind scenes tour quite interesting. Took tender into samana... Horrible port.... So poor... Quickly returned to ship. Didnt feel safe. Too many natives zipping around on motorcycles. This port is going to be replaced by tortola in the future due to passenger complaints.... Would try excursion to cayo beach if you go there but i heard it was nice but could get crowded. Preferred to relax on ship the rest of the day
mrrobby Posted January 22, 2014 #10 Share Posted January 22, 2014 Cayo Levantado is a great beach day from Samana. The ship takes you for $14 roundtrip and you a get a lounge chair in that price. Have done it a few times and it's very nice.
emcelh Posted January 22, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 22, 2014 Thanks for posting this. We will be on the Gem in Feb. Did you go to Samana? Any suggestions for that port? Thanks We made Samana a beach day at Cayo Levantado. The tender tickets were about $15 I believe, and you'll find them listed with the shore excursions. We bought ours a week or two before the cruise. It was a very nice day on a beautiful beach and we felt very secure. The only people on the island were those from the ship or people staying at the resort. The tenders went back and forth most of the day so you didn't have to stay the entire day. Most people we spoke to who took the tender into the port of Samana on their own felt they should have done something else. On the ship, check out the bridge viewing room on Deck 11 forward. It's filled with interesting information. Also, don't miss the crepes at the buffet in the evening. Great dessert! The chocoholic buffet looks better than it tastes but you'll get some great pictures.
