Rgrgirl0307 Posted February 17, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 17, 2014 Gamble yes, buy alcohol no. Legal age for gambling is 18 and alcohol purchasing/consumption on ship is 21. Now in port if 18 is legal drinking age than he certainly can off ship!
Shaded Lady Posted February 17, 2014 #3 Share Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) He must be 21 or over to drink and 18 to gamble on board.:( So he'll be able to play the slots but not enjoy a drink. Edited February 17, 2014 by Shaded Lady
Ehpride Posted February 17, 2014 #4 Share Posted February 17, 2014 He can order a drink in ports, but he probably won't be id'd! No go on the ship. It's 21 and older to order alcohol and his card will be coded as such. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Bdw062590 Posted February 17, 2014 #6 Share Posted February 17, 2014 My wife who was under 21 at the time of our last cruise definitely drank alcohol on board. Woops did I say that
h_blond2 Posted February 17, 2014 #7 Share Posted February 17, 2014 I was 21 on my first cruise, so I was able to drink legally and I was never asked for ID. I could have very well only been 20 and still been served. So, legally your son will not be able to drink on the ship, but can enjoy the casino. Of course, you can always order you can always order the drink and give it to your son. Depending on the ports you visit, he may be able to drink there. A word of caution: on our last stop in Progreso there was an 18 year old boy who was celebrating his birthday and got extremely drunk on the beach. He threw up everywhere on the bus on the way back. If you allow your son to drink in port, please keep an eye on him. The drinks in port can be extremely strong and can sneak up on you!

Your picture and other info comes up on their POS screen when your card is swiped. If you had been underage, it would have said so very clearly for the crewmember / bartender ringing you up. They knew how old you were, even though you were never carded.;)
Rare Fedic Posted February 17, 2014 #9 Share Posted February 17, 2014 I was 21 on my first cruise, so I was able to drink legally and I was never asked for ID. Are you saying they didn't ask you for your ID during check-in at Embarkation? Once they have your age on file, they wouldn't need to ask for ID every time you order something... Max Circus Posted February 17, 2014 #10 Share Posted February 17, 2014 The other thing to consider is that the age you are on embarkation is the age you are for the whole cruise as it relates to alcohol consumption. So if you turn 21 during the cruise, it won't allow you to purchase alcohol because you were still under 21 on embarkation day. It gets "coded" into your Sail and Sign card and that card wouldn't be allowed to be used to purchase anything alcoholic.
CheckersMidwest Posted February 17, 2014 #11 Share Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) On the cruise that my son was 20 1/2.....his sign & sail was 'coded' too. When they swipe it to charge to your account, your photo comes up along with info. He tried to order a mixed drink & they brought it - alcohol free. :) Edited February 17, 2014 by CheckersMidwest
KPfromCT Posted February 17, 2014 #12 Share Posted February 17, 2014 I've seen plenty of posts on here where parents have bought their 20 ish old children drinks. As long as you are not allowing him to get "plowed" and he doesn't look like he's 14, you'll probably be OK. Worst case, buy a drink for him, and bring it back to the room for him to consume. We won't judge you.... Happy cruising!!!!:D:D:D

Depending upon the ports he will probably be able to buy a drink there. My daughter who is 19 was excited that she was able to legally buy a drink in Nassau on a cruise in December. Tbay-eh Posted February 17, 2014 #17 Share Posted February 17, 2014 18 is Cozumel also. if you can see over the bar and you have the money they don't care how old you are in most ports - although the age is 18. Like others say - you can always order him a drink on your card but he won't be able to on his own card as it will be coded. Also, like another poster said, the drinks in most ports are pretty potent so be careful - I have been snookered a few times and I am old enough to know better. Ehpride Posted February 17, 2014 #18 Share Posted February 17, 2014 Technically, the drinking age in Cozumel is 18. In reality, if you can order it, they'll serve you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Unless you have personal experience with this, or policy has changed, this wasn't true in 2003. My daughter turned 21, 3 days into an 8 day cruise. She was able to go to guest services and have her S&S card changed.

Makes sense to me to have a program like that in place. I have heard of other people being asked to present ID along with an S&S card, so I wasn't sure. Thanks for the info! Mutumbojimbo Posted February 18, 2014 #22 Share Posted February 18, 2014 We won't judge you.... Happy cruising!!!!:D:D:D If there's one thing I've learned here, it's that someone is always judging you. :D But seriously, if you want to buy alcohol for your son that's your decision, and as long as it doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of the cruise it won't bother me a bit. Now let the judging begin.

She respectfully said "no thanks" and ordered a coke. I thing that if you can see over the bar, they will serve you there. christyran1228 Posted February 18, 2014 #24 Share Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) My daughter turned 18 on our cruise in August, and we happened to be in Cozumel on that day. She was very excited to order a fully leaded umbrella drink at Mr. Sanchos ... none of her friends could say they did that. Legally, anyway. :) It didn't take long for her to dislike the casino, though, when she saw how quickly her money could disappear.
