lrm Posted March 23, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 23, 2014 I wonder if someone could tell me the specifics the boat building activity on the Grand? We are cruising RT to Hawaii March 2015 and that particular on-board activity sounds fun! Do we need to bring items with us?

caribill Posted March 23, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 23, 2014 Have not been on that itinerary, but when I have seen this activity the boats are made from materials on board. There may be a requirement that they can carry an item (such as a six pack of beer) without sinking. Here are some pictures from a past contest. Costumes when the contest is judged can be a help in winning.
agelessgram Posted March 24, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 24, 2014 WE were just on the Grand in January and participated in the boat building contest. We came in 2nd and had so much fun. The completed boat must be able to hold a six pack of beer. The materials are to come from around the ship or things you may have in your suitcase or can ask the cabin stewards for. The boats have to be able to be pulled by a string (provided by crew) in the pool from one end and then back w/o sinking. Some contestants use water bottles, the tray from their room, balloons, duck tape - the more creative the better. The winner is chosen by fellow passengers through their applause and cheering. The winner gets the 6 pack of beer and bragging rights. The contest is held on way out and their were 6 teams total. Our team had 6 members. You will need a team name and captain. We took tons of pictures of this event. There is also the egg dropping contest on the way home. Where you have to drop an egg from the 6th deck to the 4th deck w/o breaking. The ship provides the egg. This contest had a lot more participates. There is a scavenger hunt - where the crew gives you a list of objects and you have 10 minutes to find as many as you can and return to starting point w/in this time frame or get penalized. No more than 6 to a team. We had a team of 2 and we won this one. There are two opportunities to make lei's but you need to sign up in advance. On the way out the lei's are made with fresh flowers on the way back they are made of ribbons. This cruise there are a lot of opportunities to meet other people and participate in many events as you are at sea for so many days. We were on a ship that had a man overboard so we spent an extra two days at sea. Hope this helps. Sue NJ
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted March 24, 2014 #6 Share Posted March 24, 2014 (edited) On Coral Panama Canal this summer: • boat building = zero entries [which means you could have won with anything...] • egg toss = lots of entries, half of which survived, winner was a really elegant design • scavenger hunt = 1 entry who had taken it very seriously Any of these contests except the egg toss are a lot of work for very little reward [iMHO]. Better to spend your time at the pool or in the bar... ;) Edited March 24, 2014 by Host Jazzbeau
