Sun-Drydock

After a long absence from NCL, we will be cruising the Sun to Alaska in June 2015. Looking forward to NCL's 14-day cruise itinerary. Hopefully, drydock schedule will not cause our cruise to be cancelled.

We've just booked 14 nights Alaska for July 2015. But we are in the forward facing minisuite which might then be located under the potential new suites and not the current observation deck.

Oh my! We have an inside cabin so not worried about relocation fortunately.

I haven't been on the Sun, yet, but I've sailed on her sister the Sky. I have a hard time believing that they would replace the forward observation lounge on this ship with more suites. There isn't enough space to configure more than a small handful of suites, and the loss of public space would make the Sun very unpleasant.

Where would everyone go if there was no observation lounge? Dazzles is relatively tiny, but it could hold some daytime events. They could move some daytime activities to the Stardust Theater, but they need that space for rehearsals, too. How much more activity can they cram in the atrium? I just cannot see how there would be adequate space for all the daily events.

However, I'm booked on the Sun this September, and I'm glad. If they do fill the observation lounge with suites, I cannot imagine ever sailing on this class of ship ever again. And that would mean not going to South America.

We have sailed on the Sun at least 4 times. I agree that removing the observation lounge would be a bad move. I found a website that mentioned that the Sun would be sailing 11-night Mexican Riviera itineraries in Oct. 2015. I have been thinking about booking that but it isn't showing up yet. So far there are no dates past Sept. 2015 that are on the website. I wish we had some more information on what is going on.

Something in the scheduling of the NCL SUN should betray when and if a Dry-Dock

is going to take place.

Simply put you don't Dry-Dock a ship for a weekend - it is more like a project

requiring 3 months of downtime to do more than a deck/stateroom conversion !

Converting a small portion of a deck into more stateroom accommodations also

is not apt to be done while the ship is underway UNLESS it is timed with a ship

positioning movement when a sell-out is not realistically expected.

Even at that that is far fetched.

I don't think that the information is confidential but for competitive reasons NCL

may not be releasing too much information about having one or more of its ships

being out of service (Dry-Dock) allowing competing cruise lines to invade their

surf and pirate the trade.

Facts to consider this ole gal:

Built 2000 Years old 14 Passengers 1936- 2323

Cabins 968 Space Ratio 34 Tons 78309

Speed 23.0 Length 848 Beam 105 Crew 847

Refurbished: 2011

Note the last line REFURBISHED: 2011

Refurbished 11 years after construction - - -

And now it is 3 years since that point -

REALLY what needs to be refurbished NOW - 3 years later ?

I don't think anything drastic is going to take place all too soon !

BUT NCL - WARNING KEEP YOUR CONVERSION PLANS IN CHECK ON CONVERTING THE OBERVATION LOUNGE ON THIS OLE GAL !

The natives are getting restless on this IMpossible Don Quixote quest !
