shaz246 Posted April 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2014 (edited) Am going on a cruise in July that stops at Port Canaveral, Great Stirrup Cay & Nassau. To anyone that has been to those regions before are bugs an issue? Mosquito's, etc? Am just starting to put my lists together of things that I need to buy and don't know whether bug repellent is a necessity? Thanks :) Edited April 20, 2014 by shaz246
caribsun Posted April 20, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 20, 2014 We bring and use insect repellent.
CruiserBruce Posted April 20, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 20, 2014 Have brought it several times, never used it.
LandlockedCruiser01 Posted April 20, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 20, 2014 I brought it, but rarely used it, since I saw hardly any mosquitoes. Even on my Everglades excursion, a place I expected to be filled with them. As a general rule, beaches are usually mosquito-free, since wind and salt water keep them away. Inland excursions to jungle areas or anywhere with a body of fresh water are riskier when it comes to mosquitoes; bring a bottle of repellent with you. Langley Cruisers Posted April 20, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 20, 2014 On a land vacation, yes we bring and use them. On a cruise where the ship stops in port for a few hours, we do not bring or use them. Your decision, though - if you can afford the space in your luggage, then feel free to bring. donaldsc Posted April 20, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 20, 2014 (edited) If you are worried and you do not want to bring bug repellent, you can pretreat your clothes. We did that on our Amazon cruise. DON Edited April 20, 2014 by donaldsc
dorisis Posted April 21, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 21, 2014 I only take it if we will be in jungle areas.
Mary Ellen Posted April 21, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 21, 2014 Worst flies we ever encountered were in Iceland. Haven't had problems in Indonesia or other 'tropical' areas. You never know when you'll need bug protection. We now pack little mesh things to cover our heads. We were so envious of the couple who whipped them out in Iceland. We've been nearly everywhere in Iceland and those are the only two places we saw any bugs
Mary Ellen Posted April 21, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 21, 2014 It was at the end of the 'walk between North America and Europe'. Our guide warned us to expect more at Lake Myvatn in a few days, but we didn't have problems there.
cb at sea Posted April 21, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 21, 2014 On your stops, you will likely NOT need repellent....mosquitoes are active in the evening...and you'll be back on the ship.
runner15km Posted April 21, 2014 #12 Share Posted April 21, 2014 We use a sunscreen that also contains a insect repellent.
h_blond2 Posted April 21, 2014 #13 Share Posted April 21, 2014 I'd rather be safe than sorry. Toss a small bottle in your luggage.
Warm Breezes Posted April 21, 2014 #14 Share Posted April 21, 2014 It is always packed in my cruise bag....in 12 cruises we have never used it...although I probably could have used it in Belize, but I had left it on the ship.
Treven Posted April 21, 2014 #15 Share Posted April 21, 2014 I take along a couple dryer sheets. I simply attach one to a belt loop on my shorts and I'm good to go.

We had no bugs there, just the other two places (and not so bad at Myvatn)
