CruiserBruce Posted May 1, 2014 #2 Share Posted May 1, 2014 Some reading on the Alaska board here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=55 would reveal the answer: layers. It is all about layers.

MarkNLynn Posted May 2, 2014 #4 Share Posted May 2, 2014 We've been twice in the early season (May). Once needed parka, gloves and hat and the other we were in shorts and long sleeve tshirts. I NEVER go with out 1 pair of shorts. You never know. It's still the best time. If you want warm vacation, why are you going to Alaska. Go early as you can in the season and enjoy the animals coming out of hibernation.
gerryl12 Posted May 3, 2014 #5 Share Posted May 3, 2014 (edited) We had beautiful HOT (80+) sun in Juneau the end of April on one cruise but we couldn't get to one of the glaciers because of the ice, but you can get snow any time. Just take LOTS of layers so you can adjust to anything. Do take shorts and hope you need them also a rain jacket or poncho or umbrella. smalltownmomwa Posted May 4, 2014 #6 Share Posted May 4, 2014 We went that same time last year and the weather was in the 80's most days. Obviously cold if you stay on deck during glacier cruising. So, definitely layers. Fleece jacker & rain coat. As for all the talk about waterproof shoes/pants/etc - you are only going to need those if your excursions call for them. Certainly don't need them for walking around town, going on tours, etc. Serious hiking or glacier-crossing would be a different story.
