Holland Nieuw Amsterdam and Amsterdam

Are the Nieuw Amsterdam and Amsterdam the same ship? Please explain--I'm confused. :confused:

As you can see from HAL's website pages on the two ships:-

• Amsterdam
• Nieuw Amsterdam

The Amsterdam is a beautiful mid-size ship in Holland America's R-class. She is one of the two flagships, and is named after the city in Netherlands.

 

The Nieuw Amsterdam is a large ship in Holland America's Signature class. She is named after the city of New York, using the name that city had when it was Dutch.

 

It can be confusing. So are several of the other things where HAL has used the same term for two different things, or two different terms for the same thing. :rolleyes:

Amsterdam is an older member of the fleet and one of the smaller ships. The NA is fairly new, and largest in the fleet.
