CrusinMike Posted July 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 5, 2014 Does anyone know if purchases are taxed while in the Port of New Orleans. If I buy a soda card, will they add local sales tax. They did this out of NYC, so want to see if this is a local law. Thanks!

Do not think that is what they are asking. I think they are asking on the ship, not in a bar in NOLA.

snc_cam Posted July 5, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 5, 2014 I've not seen them add tax, but I do know they do add the gratuity
KirkNC Posted July 5, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 5, 2014 They do that in all US ports. That's one reason to wait until you are offshore if you can.
deborahjo Posted July 5, 2014 #8 Share Posted July 5, 2014 That is why we never buy anything on board the ship til we clear international waters. Then there will be no taxes just the tip.
winddawn Posted July 5, 2014 #9 Share Posted July 5, 2014 You will be taxed on each drink purchased onboard until you are in international waters. You will not be taxed on the entire drink package.
MV Wiggle Posted July 5, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 5, 2014 Sometimes it can vary by port. For example, at Baltimore, a port tax is no longer assessed after a certain point (usually 1-2 hours after sailing) even though the ship does not reach "international waters" until 10-12 hours after sailing. About the only thing they don't tax us on is the number of times we flush the toilet. :p
Bookbug53 Posted July 5, 2014 #12 Share Posted July 5, 2014 International waters are 12 nautical miles out. So if anyone has experience out of NOLA would the tax drop off after clearing the Mississippi and sailing out into the Gulf of Mexico? That would seem to be the case. Though it is only a few cents per drink I want to know when I start getting those $0 total bills with my Cheers. I like those. ;)

CrusinMike Posted July 5, 2014 Author #14 Share Posted July 5, 2014 Sorry...I meant while on the ship. Opps! The Casino seems to open while still in the Mississippi, so I was curious if thats when tax ends on the side card.
Gizmo88 Posted July 5, 2014 #15 Share Posted July 5, 2014 (edited) well you will be taxed if still docked. I departed out of NOLA last year and did purchase while still on the Mississippi. I did wait about 45 min to an hour after the ship set sail to purchase the Bottomless Bubbles package. the receipt had the tax on it, but when i checked the S&S account that night/next day, the actual price was what they would normally charge WITHOUT the tax. so I guess after a certain point on the Mississippi you won't be charged tax. andy.capitan Posted July 5, 2014 #16 Share Posted July 5, 2014 The state still collects for a while after you set sail. Not sure if the city also taxes while tied up. I remember buying a wine package the first evening and there being sales tax added.
CruiseHealing Posted July 5, 2014 #17 Share Posted July 5, 2014 Yes. If the ship is in port, all purchases on the ship are subject to all local and state sales taxes. If you do not want to buy you soda card with local taxes, wait for the ship to sail into international waters, it is the same time the casino is open. Then no tax for you. jewelnurse Posted July 7, 2014 #18 Share Posted July 7, 2014 In New Orleans the casino opens about 10 minutes after the ship pulls away from the dock. It does not wait until international waters. May have something to do with legal riverboat gambling here lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Maryland allows the casino to be open once the ship is past the Key Bridge, as long as it's not a cruise to nowhere (aka gambling cruise). They'll also make exceptions for super rare CTNs. We also charge sales tax all the way down the bay (I'm not sure if they pay VA sales tax since I'm not awake), so many will wait to purchase Cheers on the second day to lower the bill. CruiseHealing Posted July 7, 2014 #20 Share Posted July 7, 2014 I'm surprised Maryland doesn't tax for the wake! Since they are the only state that taxes the rain!
Purvis1231 Posted July 7, 2014 #21 Share Posted July 7, 2014 Last year we purchased soda cards while docked- no taxes. It was pool slide and we were given hand written receipts and it maybe that the purchased was not entered into the computer until a later time. The casino and the shops opened while still on the Mississippi River. We did not clear the Mississippi until after midnight.
