emcelh Posted July 10, 2014 #131 Share Posted July 10, 2014 Cigarette smoke is not an allergen , I dont care how you spin it. Even the link you posted does not claim it to be an allergen.. Just sayin . lets be clear ;) Cigarette smoke allergy: Cigarette smoke allergy refers to an adverse reaction by the body to cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke allergy is not considered a true allergy but a sensitivity as the smoke is an irritant rather than an allergen. People with other allergies tend to be more sensitive to cigarette smoke. Show any published paper to the contrary and I'll eat my hat . ;) Does it really matter if it's an allergy or an irritant if the effect on someone with a sensitivity is the same? When I spend a day at the casino (which happens more often than it should) I have a lot of congestion the next day along with a nasty cough. I quit smoking 8 years ago but have the same reaction now to the smoke in the casino as I did when I was smoking. It's not bad enough to make me stop going though. Casino Comp Chick Posted July 10, 2014 #132 Share Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) I have a balcony and I would surely be upset if every time I go out there would be smoke coming in my way... guess I will have to pack my ear plugs and cowbell. :D SissasMomE An airhorn would work wonders What you both fail to realize is smoking is permitted, loud noises are not, so ring your bell, I will ring for security, Lets see who gets the last laugh Edited July 10, 2014 by iimmie
Love my butler Posted July 10, 2014 #133 Share Posted July 10, 2014 I would, and if NCL bans smoking I will just take my casino $$$$$ to Atlantic city or VegasThat's who Just to let you know, the odds in cruise ship casinos are much, much worse than AC or Vegas. Twiz Posted July 10, 2014 #134 Share Posted July 10, 2014 Sooner or later not only will NCL ban balcony smoking, but all cruise lines will be 100% smoke free. I'm an not saying it is even in the planning stages at this point, just that eventually it will come to pass. Get ready for it, cause it will be here sooner or later. I dont think this will ever happen, they would lose a lot of cruisers and that means $$$ . I do think they will tighten up on where you are allowed to smoke, on our Sun cruise in Feb smokers were only allowed to smoke in a samll corner on the pool deck. goldmom Posted July 10, 2014 #136 Share Posted July 10, 2014 Just some random thoughts. Wouldn't it be better to have smokers on their outside balcony smoking where the wind moves it along quickly? The alternative is inside in the casino (I smoke and I won't even smoke in there it's so heavy) or in clustered areas on the pool deck where there are crowds of non smokers? A large group smoking in designated outside areas, in my opinion are much more annoying due to heavy smoke output from many smokers clustered together. Privately out on their own balcony it's a single cigarette smoked quickly and gone with the wind. Be careful what you wish for, clustered smokers in designated outside areas will be much worse for those with smoke sensitiveness. Just sayin. I agree with you. I said something similar a couple of pages back. I'd much rather have smokers on their balcony where the wind pulls the smoke away than concentrated into a couple of small areas. cruisendave Posted July 10, 2014 #137 Share Posted July 10, 2014 The smoking vs non-smoking debate must be tough for cruise lines. I would hope the health and safety of the passengers is what guides the decision, but I know better than that. I'm super sensitive to smoke, and would think twice about sticking with NCL if it becomes the smokers cruise line of choice.
Vicki'sMom Posted July 10, 2014 #138 Share Posted July 10, 2014 I don't care if you smoke or you don't smoke; and I do believe that most smokers are courteous. But this whole discussion makes me sad. Sad that some here are attacking others. Also sad that people are choosing their vacations based on the issue of smoking/not smoking. :(
BaseballMomof4 Posted July 10, 2014 #139 Share Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) I am a smoker. I have cruised Carnival almost exclusively and now will be switching to NCL in order to retain those simple comforts that I enjoy about cruising - like stepping out on my balcony first thing in the morning in my PJ's with a cup of coffee and a smoke. I am not a nasty smoker or a chain smoker. If you are next to me and my smoke bothers you I will try to accommodate you and not smoke while you are outside, or say "hey neighbor, do mind if I light up right now?" I think you will find most smokers are very aware of how it bothers others and tend to accommodate folks who are nice about it and don't lead off with "why don't you just quit that nasty disgusting habit" or "you stink!" I am looking forward to being able to continue cruising and since NCL is essentially the only game in town now where I can do so comfortably, I genuinely hope they don't jump on the discriminatory band wagon. Particularly since NCL stock is rising while CCL and RCL are falling ;) Edited July 10, 2014 by BaseballMomof4 clarity

BaseballMomof4 Posted July 10, 2014 #141 Share Posted July 10, 2014 http://smokefree.gov ...just sayin' Do not take this the wrong way, I am not trying to be rude or aggressive. But that is exactly what smokers hate. If I want to quit, I will. I do not need a stranger trying to push me to do so any more than a seriously overweight person would appreciate you providing a link to weight watchers for them. I smoked for 10 years, and quit about six years ago. I am, by definition, a smoker -- or at least was one at one point. I did not "hate" people telling me that I was killing myself. You may hate it, but don't speak for everyone. I'd bet you'd appreciate a stranger pushing you out of the way of an oncoming bus, right? My personal experience says your kids will appreciate your not dying of lung caner. Plus, if we're going to have 6 active threads about smoking, we may as well get to the heart of the matter, no? As for the last part, I won't post a link to a commercial endeavor like weight watchers, but a neutral resource on the health consequences of obesity could help someone, you're right: http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/ Edited July 10, 2014 by triptolemus

And it is not up to me to make your life choices for you. All I ask is the same in return. I don't ask you to applaud the fact that I smoke. I just ask you to accept that it is my business and not yours. And as an ex-smoker one would think you would remember what is it like to be "preached to". I apologize if I have offended any smokers out there who appreciate the direction to the non-smoking websites. Please, can we have a show of hands? I would like to apologize directly. Thanks! deschoolie Posted July 10, 2014 #150 Share Posted July 10, 2014 A little consideration goes a long way (in both directions). To each his own. Non-smoker here and I hardilly welcome RCCL and CCL smokers to NCL. Don't blow smoke in my face and I won't chew with my mouth open in the restaurants...
