Purchases in Budapest

Recommended Posts

“Budapest is relatively flat”—not quite. Pest, where your ship is moored and the Central Market is located is indeed quite flat and makes for easy walking. Buda, on the west side of the river, is very hilly indeed as you will likely discover on your visit to the Fisherman’s Bastion and the Matthias Church. The views of the city from these heights are outstanding.

I believe she only does the market tour and/or the cooking class but I could be wrong. Her website is www dot budapestcookingclass dot com

The price for the combo is 30,000HUF which represented a 15% discount since we had four...if we had of had 6 (the max) she would have reduced the price by a total of 20%. The day we were there, the exchange rate made the tour and class cost about $108 per person. We felt like between the tour, the class and the meal, it was a good value and probably the best "excursion" we did during our river cruise.

Thanks for beating me to an answer. Agree with everything you stated. If you want to watch a video of some of what you will do with the cooking class (you can do either the class or the tour alone or in combo) there is a recent Viking video on the Tube of You where Agnes shows Katrine how to make goulash soup.

If you decide to do the combo, don’t eat breakfast as there are lots of tastings in the market and don’t make dinner reservations as you will be stuffed from your lunch. We grabbed doner that night as I recall.

Have a great cruise!

LOL well my statement is probably related to our current locale, Porto where nothing is flat!

You are correct, parts of the city are not flat at all but the walk from the docking position to the market is relatively as far as I recall!

Palinka - you are brave. That stuff tastes like rubbing alcohol. ;)

You actually did a taste test with isopropyl alchohol? ;p

We are just beginning to plan for our Viking cruise in November, with 1 full day in Budapest. Is it possible to walk to the Central Market from the port, or what options are there to get to and from? TIA

There's a tram line that runs along the river from the dock area to the market.

I think it tastes more like gasoline. Howlin' Wolf was my official taste tester:

What we had was homemade and had hints of plum and smoked cherry with a topnote of Fire!

Fire!

My college roommate played that track from "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" until the grooves wore out.

;) Ha. I actually did taste isopropyl alcohol as a child (back in medieval times) - nasty stuff as I recall. Anyway, the Palinka we tried reminded me of the rubbing alcohol I tasted as a child (with a hint a pear). I won't be sampling any on our upcoming visit to Budapest.
