babyher Posted July 19, 2014 #576 Share Posted July 19, 2014
This thread is fasinating.... peoples preceptions and opinions... Two stories - one perhaps interesting - one an observation Story: Was invited to the captains table and later several of us joined the captain in one of the bars for drinks and continued socializing - mostly my husband as I get quite quiet around people I don't know :o. 1/3 way through drinks hubby pulls out his cigarettes as we were sitting in a smoking area. The captain exclaims "Oh thank Heavens" and pulls his cigarettes out and they continued their discussions around being Captains in different but similar industries (airplane vs ship). Observation: Been going to the same neighborhood pub for 21 yrs now along with many of our close friends. We live in a state that still allows smoking in any establishment as long as noone under 18 is allowed. Indeed, many of our friends smoked in their 30s (I have never smoked), now we are all in our 50s/60s - most have quit smoking - sadly my DH is not one of them :( - But over half of the young people now coming into the pub do smoke - not just because smoking is allowed - but because they started in high school. While the perception is that many folks have quit and for my friends it's absolutely true - I see a significant number of kids in their 20s smoking - and they don't think twice if where they are at requires them to go outside or whether they can stay inside - neither requirement seems overly onerous since it's their normal as it's always been that way since they started... only us older people remember when people smoked in their workplace etc etc... just my observation - so yes - hotels, ships, casinos are reducing places one can smoke - I am just not sure the perception that smoking is going the way of the dodo bird anytime soon... I also observed this on our recent trip to the Med - smoking was common place at all of the outdoor seating we visited - seemly without all the hub bub seen here in the states and at least for our group - not a problem.
I will agree with you there We have a lot of young folks at work (20s , early 30s and good number of them smoke )
sjbdtz Posted July 19, 2014 #577 Share Posted July 19, 2014 Just about to hit the jackpot. Going to reserve the GV and offer smokers access to the sun deck for $5 / pop. Will only need 2000 visits over the 7 days (about 30 / hour during day time), to fully pay for my suite. Shouldn't on average by more than 5 people at a time (ish) Stephen . Get it ? You could make a little more if you offered drinks......just charge slightly more than the bars and you'll clean up. Of course, you should also be willing to accept generous tips:) Edited July 19, 2014 by kcwingwalker

vinnytman Posted July 19, 2014 #581 Share Posted July 19, 2014 (edited) Lol! You could also charge for hot tub, sundeck and steam room access too. Have your butler deliver drinks and collect the cash. Better yet, get a Square for your iPhone and just swipe everyone's card upon entry so they have an open tab to enjoy the "spa services for a nominal charge" as well. You'll really clean up if they all have an open tab. Put some private cabanas up on the sun deck-- charge an exclusive fee for those too. Haha! Awesome! I'm not a smoker but I'm glad some people are finally having a sense of humor about all this. welove2cruise* Posted July 19, 2014 #583 Share Posted July 19, 2014 I just confirmed this on NCL's website (was afraid it was too good to be true). I am doing a happy dance right now! Just wish it was starting before our Jade cruise in Venice this September but SO happy it will be in effect on the Getaway in Feb. 2015 and our Iberian Peninsula cruise out of the UK in October next year! Way to go NCL!!! As one of your loyal Platinum members I am thrilled! Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
