AlohaPride Posted July 26, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 26, 2014 It's been a few years, so please jog my memory. We are sailing on the Amsterdam in an inside cabin in a few weeks. From what understand, there is only one outlet. What type of product can I bring to make more outlets? Must it be a surge protector? Are there hangers provided in the closet? I'm trying to decide between using a hanging garment bag or a large regular suitcase. The SBP is a separate card, so I should pack a lanyard or something to keep our room card and our SBP together, correct? I probably need to pack a hole punch as well? What are ways you keep your cards together? I'm hosting the Meet and Greet. I was planning a few ice breakers and a white elephant exchange, but after reading a comment on another thread, I'm wondering if I should 86 that plan?? I'm getting into the packing for 5 frame of mind and will post more questions as I happen upon them. Thank you all, in advance, for your suggestions. :)

Most chargers will accept either European or North American current. Just check the printing on your charger to be sure.

Kamloops50 Posted July 26, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 26, 2014 You'll get one card that does everything on the ship. It will be your room key , pass to leave & return to the ship and the card is used to charge everything on board ship. localady Posted July 26, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 26, 2014 (edited) Why shouldn't I take an American adapter? Is there a benefit to hunting down a European adapter? It allows you an additional source of electricity if you have items that can charge/run with a European adapter I believe. We always carry adapters to use in various countries around the world but I hadn't thought of using it in our cabin for the computers that will accept both voltages. Thanks for the suggestion. LottaWata Posted July 26, 2014 #9 Share Posted July 26, 2014 (edited) We had a verandah room, but the outlets are probably similar/same. An American adapter worked fine. CC boards say DON'T use a surge protector because it does something to the ship (either sets off alarms or causes the hull to rust faster, I can't remember which one). I was able to use the outlet in the bathroom for my leg hair plucker(American plug) as well. I just carried my cards in my back pocket or other handy pocket the whole time. On formal night I carried them in my husbands pocket. One thing I wish I'd remembered but didn't was that they provide shampoo, conditioner, and gel soap in dispensers. I would think this would be in all rooms. Edited July 26, 2014 by LottaWata
Huskerchick Posted July 26, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 26, 2014 As Sail said there will be hangers in the closet and more are available on request. We always travel with a power strip which allows us to plug in extra items. Yes you will have 2 cards. I believe I read here on CC that the front desk will punch your card for you. I use a waterproof case with a lanyard that holds my cards and a few dollars. I bought it at a marine store (love it). Have a great cruise! Rare POA1 Posted July 26, 2014 #11 Share Posted July 26, 2014 Why shouldn't I take an American adapter? Is there a benefit to hunting down a European adapter? They are talking about a European Male to North American Female power adapter. It has 2 round plug posts and accepts 2 spades. Just MAKE SURE THAT WHATEVER YOU PLUS IN CAN TAKE 220V-240V @ 50Hz. That should be most moderate electronics.
Rare POA1 Posted July 26, 2014 #12 Share Posted July 26, 2014 Unless they changed it, the SBP was a standalone card. You had to carry both it and your room key.

What type of product can I bring to make more outlets? Must it be a surge protector? You should NOT bring a power strip with a surge suppressor. It may be confiscated and held until cruise end. The best thing to do is go to the front desk and ask for one of theirs ASAP after boarding. I believe there is a $20 deposit to assure its return. As a backup plan in case they are out of them: bring your own without a surge protector and ask the front desk if yours is approved. jaspersmycat Posted July 26, 2014 #14 Share Posted July 26, 2014 (edited) power strip without surge protection OK. Front desk happy to hole punch your cards. White Elephant exchange at meet and greet OK. Depending on number of attendees at M&G, we may not have room or too many people to participate. cp556 Posted July 26, 2014 #15 Share Posted July 26, 2014 Agree that front desk will be able/happy to punch a hole in your cards. So will the casino cage. I kept my SBP and room key card together on a squiggly-cord that the casino used to provide (but no longer does :). So a lanyard is a good idea. I asked for the little SPB sticker to be placed on my room key card so I wouldn't mistakenly hand it over instead of the SBP card, but Amsterdam did not have the stickers. Enjoy Amsterdam and Alaska. It was a wonderful cruise :)
sapper1 Posted July 26, 2014 #16 Share Posted July 26, 2014 (edited) Why shouldn't I take an American adapter? Is there a benefit to hunting down a European adapter? You don't need an American adapter as your plugs will be American style. The rooms have one American receptacle and one European. Taking the adapter allows you to plug in two American style plugs BUT only use the European one with your chargers or you will fry your appliance. The chargers will be marked 110 to 240 volts. Just check that you have that type. I'm not talking about an expensive converter. Just a simple adapter that will cost a few dollars. The converter is unnecessary with the chargers. innlady1 Posted July 27, 2014 #19 Share Posted July 27, 2014 Why shouldn't I take an American adapter? Is there a benefit to hunting down a European adapter? Because one of the outlets is for European current so the only thing that will work if you choose to use it is a converter in which you can plug 110V. In other words, it makes it "useable" for us non=Europeans.

AlohaPride Posted July 27, 2014 Author #21 Share Posted July 27, 2014 (edited) Thanks, Sheila. I'm just wondering if it's worth it for us to hunt down a European Converter for one use when we won't need it ever again after this cruise (or at least, not for 2-3 years). I assume it would be fine to just bring an outlet power strip for use while we are in the cabin as long as it isn't a surge protector? I was thinking about bringing our 3 outlet plug. I think this will work? We only have our cell phones and one tablet to charge. They won't all be plugged in at the same time, as well, so I assume 3 outlets will work for our needs. You may only be able to plug in two things at once, though, if the plugs are large, or if there are large boxes near the plug. I have a European adapter you can borrow if you need it.
