jtl513 Posted January 21, 2016 #3002 Share Posted January 21, 2016 Is the Eurodam Casino indeed still all non-smoking? Thanksgiving week it was non-smoking 2 nights out of 7. I don't know how it has been since the dry dock in Dec.
sugcarol Posted January 22, 2016 #3003 Share Posted January 22, 2016 (edited) Don't click on the thread if you don't like what it says. I am interested in keeping up with smoking rules on HAL, and this is the best thread to do that. Edited January 22, 2016 by sugcarol

Lizzie68 Posted January 22, 2016 #3005 Share Posted January 22, 2016 On a large Disney website they have a smoking thread. From the beginning the moderator stated that it was not to be used for debate, it was to only tell about smoking areas in the parks and at the resort. Non-smokers and smokers alike go there but nobody gives their opinion and the good and bad of it. Good current info is located there and has been going for quite a few years, nobody abuses it because everyone wants the info it provides. Here it's like kids bickering, grow up. But this is a forum where everyone's opinion is valid and they are free to express it, as long as it is within the guidelines, meets the expectation of common decency and courtesy and does not insult other posters. Unfortunately, some trolls slip through for a short while but it's just a blip and the conversation continues.;) Throwing out insults is not, as far as I know, within the guidelines. jtl513 Posted January 22, 2016 #3006 Share Posted January 22, 2016 (edited) None are so blind as those who will not see. Actually, as an ex-smoker I am not anti-smoking on HAL ships. Edited January 22, 2016 by jtl513

Unfortunately, some trolls slip through for a short while but it's just a blip and the conversation continues.;) Throwing out insults is not, as far as I know, within the guidelines. Lizzie I believe the point some have attempted to make is that so very many of the posts on this thread do not meet the guidelines. Several posters continue to attempt to debate the health issues of smoking and of second hand smoke. If Walt's directions were followed as written then this thread would be very similar to that on the Disney web site. I believe if one reads what Walt wrote in the very first post even you will have to admit that many posts do NOT meet the guidelines. We have established this thread to be the "go to" thread for all discussions pertaining to Holland America's on board smoking policies. This thread is intended to make it easier for all Cruise Critic members to discuss these policies and any future changes thereto. Here's a link to HAL's policy summary Shipboard Life: Is smoking allowed on board? - ..... (snip)..... Reminders. 1. Our community guidelines continue to apply to this thread. 2. This is a forum for discussions of cruising and associated topics. It is not a forum for discussing the health, economics and public policy aspects of smoking, whether associated with cigarettes, pipes, cigars or controlled substances (marijuana). 3. Discussions of this approach to smoking posts and other board policies are off topic and will be removed. Please post discussions of this approach for smoking posts to this thread: Single Smoking Thread on the HAL Board - a Sticky Thanks for your understanding and continued participation on the Cruise Critic forums. cruz chic Posted January 22, 2016 #3008 Share Posted January 22, 2016 (edited) No Lizzie that wasn't my point at all. Neither was it meant to be critical of you and I'm sorry if you took it that way and I certainly apologize if that was the way you took it.My point was, perhaps wrongly, that Walt set this up so that a CCer had one thread and one thread only to check to see if there had been any changes to HAL's smoking policy. Instead it seems to me that it has evolved into a forum where certain posters use it as their own personal soap boxes. As it is, when I want to see if HAL's Smoking Policy has changed I must wade through page after page of less than informative information. Why would you have to wade through anything? I'm quite certain when Hal changes its smoking policy it will be displayed on their website. I don't think that is something that they will hide. They are going to need to give at least 3 months notice. Furthermore, anything that doesn't fit into cc guidelines will be removed without too much delay. RuthC Posted January 24, 2016 #3011 Share Posted January 24, 2016 Since the Veendam doesn't have Seaview Bar is smoking permitted at the "Bar At The Retreat on the Lido deck? Unless something has changed since the last time I was out there (unlikely, or I would have read about it here), yes. There is a smoking area on the aft Lido Deck, one side. band it Posted January 24, 2016 #3012 Share Posted January 24, 2016 I am on the NA this year. NA has "sea view" bar, so we can smoke there. Other than our verandah, the casino, & sea view bar, where can I light up? I was also wondering about where can I light up during fueling? Is the sea view bar a large area for smokers? We usually pack a "butt can" so the ashes don't fly all over the place. Are the ashtrays provided sufficient for this?
RuthC Posted January 24, 2016 #3013 Share Posted January 24, 2016 I was also wondering about where can I light up during fueling? Outdoor smoking is prohibited when fueling is going on. Since the only indoor aread, the Casino, is closed when the ship is in port (which is when fueling is going on), then I know of no place on the ship where you can smoke during that time. There's one ship with a smoking room (I believe it's down to just the Noordam) indoors. I don't know if that is open for smokers when there is fueling. No not me {{{{hack}}} Just asking for husband:o I guess none of us will know until she first sails and we may get some reports back. Apparently, the Noordam now has the Oak Room for smokers, perhaps that will extend to the rest of the fleet.
sail7seas Posted January 24, 2016 #3017 Share Posted January 24, 2016 When Noordam first came out the Oak Room was a smoking permitted area. I seem to recall they stopped allowing smoking in there at some point but then resumed it. Noordam currently is the only ship to still have an Oak Room. I haven't seen one on Koningsdam's deck plan but I could have missed it.
RuthC Posted January 24, 2016 #3018 Share Posted January 24, 2016 Noordam currently is the only ship to still have an Oak Room. Almost correct. The Prinsendam has a room called the Oak Room, but it is not a smoking room. Not at all. I wouldn't want someone familiar with the Noordam to book (or even refuse to book) the Prinsendam expecting the same thing. Once again, Holland America has used the same term for two different purposes. No wonder confusion ensues for so many things.

kennicott Posted January 27, 2016 #3021 Share Posted January 27, 2016 We were on the Eurodam on Jan 3 and there was No Smoking in the Casino. Only smoking area was in a small area Aft on Lido Deck. Most interesting: nsChamp asks five days ago: "Is the Eurodam Casino indeed still all non-smoking?" jtl513 responds five days ago: "Thanksgiving week it was non-smoking 2 nights out of 7. I don't know how it has been since the dry dock in Dec." Paulladola says: "We were on the Eurodam on Jan 3 and there was No Smoking in the Casino. Only smoking area was in a small area Aft on Lido Deck." So what is it? Is it really non-smoking today, 100% of the time? If totally no smoking did HAL really make that decision in a little over four weeks at the end of the year, or was it in the plans all along? Or is it still, as jtl513 experienced, only closed to smoking some days of the week???

Rare Tom-n-Cheryl Posted January 27, 2016 #3025 Share Posted January 27, 2016 Yeah, I guess. I'd still rather they eliminate it from balconies instead though. That's a tough one (if I had to make that call) - spending anywhere from 1 to 4 hours in the casino each evening... but that same amount of balcony time daily as well. At least I can enjoy smoke-free air in BOTH locations on our Celebrity Equinox sailing in 37 short days! :) Tom
