What does 8-5pm really mean? I assume you have to wait to get off the ship and can't wait until 4:59 to board. I'm trying to plan my own excursions and want to make sure I safe with time.

If the ship arrives at 8:00 am it usually takes about 30 minutes for the ship to be cleared by the local authorities. You can leave around 8:30 or so and re-board anytime before 5 pm.

It's best to plan on being back aboard at least an hour or two before the ship leaves to give yourself time to get back to the pier. The gangway will be pulled in at 5pm and the ship will steam away.

Also mout tour companies know the ship's schedule and will schedule tours around it. Unless you are going to hire a cab, in which car they will be waiting whenever you get off.

Just remember that they ship will not wait for you to get back it you are late. So it is best not to push your luck.

Depending on the itinerary, the ship may well berth much earlier so 8am means off at 8am. But as other posts, certainly expect to be off by 8.30.

If you have to go ashore by tender it will take longer - your itinerary should mention "tender" if this is the case.

And latest back-on-board time is usually 30 minutes before scheduled sailing time, or an hour at a tender port. Times in your daily newssheet & at the gangway. Give yourselves some wiggle-time to allow for delays - another half an hour or so, but that depends very much how far you stray & your means of transport.

If "my own excursions" means a pre-booked private tour rather than DIY, then as Akman's post your tour operator will know the times & routine.

If the ship is due to sail at 5 pm and you get back at 4.59, there will probably be a gangplank open for you. Probably. You'd be a fool to count on it, though - especially on a repeat occurrence!

As stated above, official passenger return time is usually half an hour before sailing.
