? Dockyard transportation status

Mr Crockwell added: “We also need to look at making Dockyard an even more attractive destination for tourists.

“There is a mindset from some passengers to get out of Dockyard as soon as they arrive and we need to counter that.

“If we can keep people in Dockyard there is not going to be such a rush and pressure on the transport system to get everyone to Horseshoe or Hamilton as soon as they get off the ship. And this obviously helps local business up there too.”

Maybe you did not understand what I meant. Maybe they are doing it on purpose.

I'm sure that's part of it.They've been receiving these large ships all summer and have watched most of the passengers head away from Docklands. An easy solution is to make it more difficult to leave.

If that is truly what's happening, shame on Bermuda. These ships could easily sail to other destinations, and I think the island as a whole would suffer.

We're also sailing on Sunday. We plan to use to public transportation as well. I think we'll postpone Horseshoe Beach until later in the week, or maybe head there in the afternoon. How late do the busses run back to dockyards?

I'm wondering if we should switch days. Originally I planned for us to do the beaches on Wednesday and Dockyard on Friday.

I saw a bus schedule on here somewhere.

Personally, I would stay near the dockyard on Friday. I am not one to press my luck when leaving Bermuda. You never know what could happen.

My thoughts exactly although we went away from the dock while in the Bahamas. But I stressed the entire time.

We are on the Summit too. I'm planning on doing Horseshoe Bay on Thurs. Last time also we stayed by the dock on Friday. Thanks for the bus schedule.

We have a whaler rented for 6 hours on Thursday :)

I seriously have been considering a June, 2015 cruise on either Liberty of the Seas or Celebrity Summit. Sailing as a solo in a veranda cabin, my per day cost would be nearly $200 more per day than I paid in 2008 on the Amsterdam's world cruise. Now, added into this equation information about the transportation system issues, I am forgetting Bermuda.

Why is Bermuda so expensive as a cruise destination? The ships are not using as much fuel when they are at dock as compared to when they would be underway. The cruise lines must be making tons of money on their Bermuda itineraries.

My travel agent says that more affordable specials often become available closer to sailing date. I will check back then and maybe, by then, the transportation issues will be resolved.

If not, well, there is a big wide world out there and many places welcome tourists!

Why is it so expensive? Simple supply & demand. Bermuda is a limited run each year with a limited amount of ships. And while expensive it is usually cheaper and less hassle than flying a family to Florida for a cruise.

As far as the ships making money that can be debated, I am sure they do, the ship is pretty much shut down while in port and only this year casinos can be open on the ship at night.

If cost is an issue, have you considered the solo/studio cabins on the NCL Breakaway?

We just got back today from Bermuda.

I haven't been on Cruise Critic for a week and I didn't even read through this entire thread, but I will tell you what we did.

We arrived on Sunday and were off the Dawn at 11:10. I purchased three day transportation passes for my family of five right inside the terminal. I knew how much the five passes would be and I knew what I wanted to do, so I didn't need to dig for money or ask questions.

We booked it over to the ferry terminal and got on the 11:30 ferry to Hamilton. We then walked the five minutes to the bus terminal and got on the #7 bus to the beach (heading toward the Dockyard).

We arrived at Horseshoe at 12:20. I didn't think that was too bad, considering the bus ride back to the Dockyard later in the day was 40 minutes, so if we had taken a mini-bus or a regular bus it probably would have still taken almost the same amount of time.

Note: This will only work if you can get on the 11:30 ferry out of the Dockyard to Hamilton, because the next ferry on Sunday after the 11:30 is 1:30. I didn't know what we were going to do until I saw that we were off the Dawn at 11:05 or so and knew we could get to the ferry by 11:30. I will mention that we were traveling with a 6 year old who walks pretty slowly as well as an 8 year old who is recovering from a leg injury, so if you can start walking to the ferry by 11:15 and move along, you should be able to make the 11:30 ferry on Sunday.

Sounds like a good plan. Thanks for the update.

I see you're on the Breakaway, which arrives on a Wednesday. The other poster was on a ship that arrived on a Sunday, with a completely different ferry and bus schedule in effect. You need to make your plans around the correct day's schedule.

Thanks! You are right. Wed-Fri might also have more passengers since the Breakaway is a bigger ship.

We are planning to visit Town of St. George for Day 1 (Wed).

Planning to visit the south shore beaches on the second day (Thursday) and walk from Horseshoe to Warwick Long Bay Beach.

Maybe taking the ferry to Hamilton and taking the bus to Horseshoe might work for us?

Yes, you can take the ferry to Hamilton and then the #7 bus to Horseshoe Bay.
