CaveDiving Posted September 21, 2014 #2 Share Posted September 21, 2014 Are biting insects a problem in Tahiti & Bora Bora? Not as I remember. We've been both places several times, and I don't recall any particular problem. Of course, YMMV. Scott & Karen
jmf123 Posted September 21, 2014 #3 Share Posted September 21, 2014 I have also been to Tahiti and Bora Bora several times, and never experienced mosquitos or sand fleas. (In December both times). It may depend on the time of year or particular island. Here is a thread from the Paul Gauguin Cruises forum- some have encountered them and some have not: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1386653&highlight=sand+fleas. Rare Keith1010 Posted September 21, 2014 #4 Share Posted September 21, 2014 Insects love me. If they only bite one person it would be me. With that said I have not had any problems with them at the Pacific Ocean Islands but it is always wise to come prepared with insect repellent just in case. Krazy Kruizers Posted September 21, 2014 #6 Share Posted September 21, 2014 Just to be on the safe side, take an insect repellent that has DEET.
WatchHill Posted September 21, 2014 #7 Share Posted September 21, 2014 We were in FP in February '14 and received an alert/emergency notice from Princess about the mosquitoes. The CDC also had a travel alert on its site. My primary MD who is also an infectious disease specialist contacted me about my travel plans and urged me to use plenty of DEET and stay away for deep rain forest ventures. It was difficult to find DEET in MA in the middle of winter, nothing at CVS, etc. Finally found the spray and towels at a local hardware store. I packed it in double zip locks in checked luggage. We did a lagoon tour in Bora Bora, so we were not in immediate contact with potential biting mosquitoes until we got to the tour guide's island motu for lunch. That's when I used the spray...just in case. When we got to Tahiti, I did use the DEET towels and spray at the IC and for a circle island land tour. Husky61 Posted September 21, 2014 #8 Share Posted September 21, 2014 When we were in Tahiti the mosquitoes were terrible. I was bitten and contracted Dengue fever which was miserable. So it may be the luck of the draw. In any event perhaps you should contact your physician and see what advice he/she gives you.:)
sheba2008 Posted September 24, 2014 #9 Share Posted September 24, 2014 Are biting insects a problem in Tahiti & Bora Bora? YES, we had bites from a island tour in Tahiti, I had some insect repellant with me but it contained no Deed, so it didn't help (can't buy stuff with deed in it in Belgium, it's off the market). bring some with deed in it. We where there last year in october. Linda :)
