Sunviking Posted November 21, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2014 For those sailing to or from Venice I just saw this piece on the news. Venice is going to ban wheeled luggage. Here's a link to the story http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/21/travel/italy-venice-wheeled-suitcases/index.html
paul929207 Posted November 22, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 22, 2014 $620 fine will certainly put a damper on your vacation. It would cause me to look for a cruise that did not start or end in Venice
sunsetme Posted November 22, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 22, 2014 its amazing to see people schlep luggage, baby carriages and other paraphernalia across all those bridges and cobblestones.
eandj Posted November 22, 2014 #4 Share Posted November 22, 2014 (edited) If they actually would think to enforce this, the hotels away from a canal drop off will scream. They would be the ones losing tourist business. Perhaps rubber wheeled wagons that will be in stands, like in airports.... Hotel staff sent to meet and greet with luggage carriers? Solutions will be needed. There's a lot more than cruisers visiting. Edited November 22, 2014 by eandj
MisterMet Posted November 22, 2014 #5 Share Posted November 22, 2014 OMG! What's next? Banning airline traffic over the city because it's too noisy? We will be in Venice in May 2015. Can't imagine any hotel that's not next to the train station or a Vaporetto stop putting up with this stupid idea. Bet dollars to donuts that this goes nowhere. Can't see the local government potentially losing $$ over some whiners. I guess they don't understand what drives their economy.:p:p:p
DrivesLikeMario Posted November 22, 2014 #6 Share Posted November 22, 2014 Totally agree. What are they going to do? Hire a Luggage Police force? It's hard enough to get a regular cop there to do anything. Can't imagine them (and their egos) chasing suitcases down the street.
PhillyCruiser Posted November 22, 2014 #7 Share Posted November 22, 2014 These are the same people who banned large cruise ships from docking in Venice. I think we'll be staying in Mestre in the future. In Mestre I can wheel my luggage anywhere I want. It's a very short and economical train or bus ride to Venice. I agree, that is definitely the better option. I wonder how they are going to restock stores. Those huge carts that they roll up and down the streets have to do a lot more damage than wheeled suitcases.
flamomo Posted November 22, 2014 #9 Share Posted November 22, 2014 READ THIS ...... there is hope that you can still drag your bags in Venice!! http://www.ansamed.info/english/news/general_news/2014/11/21/venice-denies-ban-on-trolley-suitcases_fbd179c0-70fe-4740-bc7d-377a36c93800.html
timetravler Posted November 22, 2014 #10 Share Posted November 22, 2014 Venice needs a plan if they do implement this. NO ONE is going to buy new luggage just to take to Venice. The article talks about the luggage wheels waking them up, Really? Most visitors DO NOT arrive in Venice late at night I would think. Also all the boats don't wake people up? They awoke me! If Venice doesn't wants tourists, this is one sure way to eliminate them.
timetravler Posted November 22, 2014 #11 Share Posted November 22, 2014 Oh good. Now I see the OP may have been given false info and they are denying that they plan on banning wheeled luggage. Thank Goodness. lets hope this last article isn't just a rumor.
casavaha Posted November 22, 2014 #12 Share Posted November 22, 2014 We always stay in Mestre pre cruise. Easy to get to the ship and when we explore Venice we have no luggage. This law is no joke, Venice just banned large cruise ships from sailing the Grand Canal. They are not worried about tourism because they know tourists will still come to the city. Carolyn R Posted November 22, 2014 #13 Share Posted November 22, 2014 Relax everyone, this does not apply to personal baggage, only to commercial carts with hard wheels rather than blow-up tires.
