My Crown experience could have been better.

Unfortunately I found my Crown cruise experience rather disappointing but they are all such easy fixes. First the linens in our cabin B223 were discolored, old, frayed, they reminded me of what cheap motel linens. A tube of lotion. Again a bad motel. No shower cap,no conditioner, they had two bottles of the worst shampoo/conditioner that gets refilled in the shower. The bathroom and the hallways always smelled like hmmm poop. The carpet in the cabin is old and needs to be replaced. As well as the draperies.

I do not believe the crew on the crown are well taken care of by management. Happy crew equals happy guest's. this crew looks over worked and sick to death of dealing with passengers that are so demanding. The food meh not so much. the last princess cruise we were on was back in 2000 I cannot even compare dining on these two cruises dinner was an event and we looked forward to it. Not even close on the crown it was more like where do we have to go for dinner. Anytime dining is a joke. Don't do it. Take the early seating. If you can't make it head down to anytime dining and get ready to wait. The food...

How can you NOT do a Caesar Salad correctly it was wilted and very wet with very little flavor. The Shrimp cocktail presentation ugh I should have taken a picture 5 sad little shrimp sitting on a piece of lettuce with sometimes a swipe sometimes a glob of cocktail sauce. Not a lot of flavor I understand most of the crown passengers are well into there 70s and might require a bland diet but what about us young 50 year olds. I did discover the fettuccine Alfredo in the Parmesan basket yummy had it three times lol lobster prawn night was also Delish.got the Alfredo on the side.

The buffet pretty much everything served in the dining room is served in the buffet. We only ate in the buffet for breakfast and on or last night I only had some salad. Breakfast for me was a bagel. Hard to mess it up.

A few positives loved the afternoon tea.Best food on the boat, delightful little sandwiches, cookies, I had the best Napoleon of my life the cream puffs also yummy I'm just sorry I only got to do it for the last 3 days really enjoyed it.

The pizza by the pool very good. The fries very good always hot. Princess also makes great bread we loved the rolls at dinner.

MUTS was great, sit back and enjoy. Nobody trying to sell you anything.

Had two massages one on a port day one on a sea day. They were fabulous. I have had plenty they were both great. Spa staff happy, polite.

Passenger services ugh nothing nice to say.

Casino dealers great.supervisors ugh, get some personality or get new jobs.

Bartenders ugh great drinks not very nice or personable.

Waiters were rather hit and miss. Captains were kind of snotty for the type of food being served.

Did not go to any shows because most of them were made up of staff type talent shows. I did want to see the Elton John tribute but we missed it.

Princess should be truly embarrassed with what they are calling a putting green. It's ripped up,stained.needs to be replaced. The sanctuary 40.00 a day per person? They have got to be kidding I saw two men in the pool and a couple of people in the loungers.

Overall Princess should strive to do much better. All of my comments can be so easily fixed.

Will I cruise again? Probably.

Will it be with Princess probably not. The over all feeling I got was not that of a guest but of a dollar sign how much can I be sold. What will I buy, how much will I spend. What can princess get away with not giving. Service? Quality dining? Refurbished cabins with quality new linens would be a great start the extras matter and we the passengers do notice the cut backs.

Sorry your recent Crown Princess cruise was not up to your expectations. Hopefully your next Princess cruise will be better.....:):):)

The pool is not part of the Sanctuary, so anyone can use it with no fee involved.

It is not usually crowded because many passengers do not know it exists and others think you have to pay for the Sanctuary to use it.

Captains were kind of snotty for the type of food being served.

Did not go to any shows because most of them were made up of staff type talent shows.

A couple of questions: what type of food should be served to justify Captains being snotty? How many staff type talent shows were there? I've only seen one per cruise, myself. It was pretty good. If they are now doing staff type talent shows every night on every cruise, I will be happy.

Hope you have a better experience on your next cruise line.

We just got off the Ruby(identical to Crown) and called for reservations every day for anytime dining. Sure there were long lines for people that just show up but we went right in on the reservation line. I think the poster didn't understand what needed to be done.I don't like lines either but for us knowing what to do , it worked perfectly.

Thank you for your review. Which night did they serve lobster and prawns?

I am just off the Crown as well ... the lobster and prawns were on the last formal night .. it was a teeny tail and 2 small prawns, and 2 small asparagus spears, and a ice cream scoop of plain rice. I am not a big eater but even I can eat more than this. The alfredo as an appetizer is really good. For the first time ever I did not enjoy the MDR. Anytime seating was not done well ... 30 minute wait both times. But we just sat and had a glass of wine and listened to the band play.

I always find it interesting that some folks can have a completely different experience on the same cruise.

We were on this cruise and had a great time. I found our linens to be just fine. Did you ask to have them replaced? We had the new mattresses and they were quite comfortable and the pillows were the best I've ever had on a Princess ship.

As for the toiletries, I did have the Elite pouch of goodies, but had the same shampoo/conditioner and bath gel in the bottles. They worked fine for us, but I did like the eucalyptus stuff better.

We never smelled any sewer odors anywhere that we ventured on the ship.

We did have early seating. Our jr. waiter was a delight. The waiter himself was just so-so. The food was better than on our last couple of cruises on Golden Princess. My Caesar salad was perfect. I can't say that I had a bad meal onboard. The Norman Love desserts were especially yummy... the pistachio dome is extraordinary. https://flic.kr/s/aHsk74FRYT

I had to deal with Passenger Services a couple of times (got overcharged in Skywalkers one night) and my son had some issues, but they were handled quickly and efficiently.

There was only one International Crew Show and it was fun ('cept for the guy who did a odd trick with razor blades).

I agree about the putting green... it certainly could use some work.

I'm not sure how you missed the actual Sanctuary. We swam in the free Lotus Pool a couple of times. It was heated and generally crowd-free. We were disappointed that the swim-against-the-current machine was offline due to some health regulation matter...

So, to sum up, we had great service, the crew was very friendly and the food was good. We had the best bartenders, especially Rosallie in Crooners and Rolly in the Wheelhouse.

We saw some great deals coming up on Crown Princess and are definitely contemplating cruising again very soon...

That would be Cabo San Lucas formal night...

Rick,

I agree with you 100%. We were also on this cruise and had a wonderful time. We were just down the hall from the original poster (on Baha) and never smelled any sewer smells.

I am sorry that the poster had a bad time, but we thought that this cruise was a really good one. We did anytime dining, and went after 7:30 p.m. and got right in. I do understand that going earlier does have a wait sometimes.

Again, for us, it was a great cruise and are looking at doing this exact same cruise in a few months. We enjoyed it that much!

We were on the November 29 cruise and it was great. We had late traditional, which eliminated any waiting. The food was absolutely wonderful! Rick Eck, I agree with you, the pistachio chocolate dome was wonderful.

I had an inside cabin and no problems with it, be it linens, etc. I do love that lotion in a tube! It is very nice.

I also don't understand the comment about shows being performed by the staff. There's only one!

I also thought the crew was wonderful! If you treat them right, they will go above and beyond the call of duty.

May I suggest that you consider Crystal, Regent, Oceania, or any of the higher end cruises? Those may be more to your liking.

First, realize that everyone has different criteria, different standards, different expectations...

So, quite easily, two different people can go on the same cruise and draw different conclusions...

A lot also depends on what you have to compare it to...

Someone who cruises Princess exclusively or primarily will likely see the cruise differently than someone who typically cruises, say, Celebrity or HAL or Oceania...

I've cruised on eight different cruise lines...and have occasionally done two lines back to back or within close time frames--that's where you really spot the differences...

Every cruise line has its deficiencies...They also have some things they do well...

A lot of things some people complain about are actually fairly subjective...Taste of food? Depends on what you like or are accustomed to...Can also be impacted by what you ordered--we're all not eating the whole menu...

Quality of entertainment? Again, may be a matter of personal preference...

Even condition of cabins may be a factor of which of the 1400+ cabins you are in...Of course, no cabin or ship venue should be overly worn...

However, some things are quantifyable...

How crowded the ship is...Whether the showroom or the lounges are undersized or sized correctly for the number of passengers...Wait times for Anytime Dining...And people may easily be differently affected depending on when they arrived for the show or for dinner...

That said, I have not yet been on the Crown...I will be in less than two weeks...

I have, however, just recently disembarked from the Golden...

I did notice a number of shortcomings...OTOH, I try not to let most of them bother me much...

The shrimp cocktail? No, not all that well done...But, again, it depends on what you expect...I assume most regular Princess customers accept this as a standard...But, when you cruise a lot on Celebrity, for example, you are accustomed to a nice portion of larger shrimp...and the waiter then serves you the cocktail sauce from a silver dish--to whatever amount you request...sort of a nicer touch...Does the lesser presentation of Shrimp Cocktail kill my cruise? Heavens, no...And, if you find the portion small, easy answer, order two...

The two major problems I have with Princess are:

1) Bad management of Anytime Dining resulting in lines and long waits for a table...Something I've NEVER seen on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity on many cruises--but see often on Princess. Part of the problem is poor management--Princess does not turn away traditional seating passengers from the anytime rooms--creating an imbalance. (BTW, we could NOT get dining room reservations on any day this last cruise--even when calling at 8:00 am!!)

2) Showrooms on Princess ships are undersized in terms of number of seats for the passenger load--requiring one to show up very early to get seats at shows.

Other than that, most of the rest, to me, are minor irritations for which I will gladly look the other way. If the carpet is worn and needs replacing, I'm willing to overlook it...Besides, this is something that I am sure differs from ship to ship depending on the age of the ship and when it last went through a refurbishment...Other things I find I don't like, I just learn to avoid--plenty of other things to do on the ship...

And, a major point to note is that these last couple of Princess cruises I've been on...and the next as well...were fairly cheap...I'm not expecting everything to be absolutely perfect at the rates I'm paying for these cruises...I certainly am getting my money's worth in value...

Will any problem keep me from cruising again with Princess? Likely not...

The reason I cruise on Princess, for the most part, is that only they, along with Carnival, are serving Southern California right now...And I would really rather not cruise on Carnival (though I've cruised with them four times now). If we were in a market that was also served by, say, Celebrity, then Princess would likely not get a lot of my business...But, everything is relative...I weigh Princess vs. Carnival...I weigh the cost of airfare across the country vs. driving to the port (especially not a question on shorter cruises)...and I end up with Princess...

And then, the only questions become "Do I enjoys the cruise?", "Do I get value for my money?", etc.

You just can't ask "Did I fiond anything to complain about?"...because most of us can always find things to complain about...You really have to just ask "Did I enjoy enough of it to outweigh the complaints?"

On our last cruise (Star Princess) the lobster was insanely tiny. However, when I ordered it the waiter warned me that it was quite small and insisted on bringing me a double portion. When I saw the "lobster tail" I had to agree with him that it was incredibly small. However, as I said, he did make sure to bring me double without being asked as he was no doubt getting used to people asking for more and wanted to "head me off at the pass" in that regard. I did appreciate it.

I really do have to wonder where they get such tiny lobster tails. Maybe they are just from really big crayfish.

We'll be on Crown in 42 days so I'll have to see how things are there. I think we will most likely have a great time.

Now I see why we like Princess, we don't go to the shows and prefer the flexibility of the buffet and therefore miss out on the two apparently biggest source of complaints. And at the same time freeing up spots for other people. The world is such a wonderful place.

I thought the buffet was really good lol ... one night there was nothing much on the mdr menu I liked so up we went and it was so good. No lines,2 soups ( mdr had one ) and a bacon wrapped piece of cod that was so good I went back and had another one for dessert. I love the dining room .. it is such a nice way to have dinner .... but we were underwhelmed by the choices every night.

On the other hand I would book Princess again just for the Cuban sandwiches and chicken cashew salad down in the Atrium...so good.

This may not look like much volume for a dinner but one of the things my wife and I really enjoy about eating in MDR is the fact that the portions are sized so that we can enjoy an appetizer, main course, and desert without getting overly full. Yes, one can have extra if they like and I have actually ordered extra of something (double escargot for instance) but, in the main, it's wonderful to be served a nice sit-down dinner with multiple courses and be able to walk away feeling satisfied but not stuffed.

I'd love to have the food pictured above for dinner tonight. :)

Captains should never ever be snotty. But many are, in some very expensive gourmet rooms. I believe there were two crew type talent shows.Sounds like you'll have a wonderful cruise.

The only show I wanted to see was the Elton tribute. I don't go to my own company talent show so passing on princesses would be the norm for me. My word! so only one crew show. ok the other was the princess dancers according to my husband who went and fell asleep.

To all the posters who feel the need to jump in and defend there cruise line go ahead this is MY personal opinion. I work in a high end Las Vegas property. Have dined in some pretty fabulous gourmet rooms. There was nothing at all in MY opinion fabulous about the food on the crown princess. My bed was not new and comfy it was old and lumpy.I asked my Stewart for a top sheet that is all I asked for. I must have higher standards and yes I think I will cruise Disney next time.

I don't think that having a different opinion is a bad thing as each of us have different expectations. I read your 1st CC post saying this is your 1st cruise experience since 2000 & a lot has changed since then on ALL mass market cruise lines.

To me that is understandable when comparing the prices paid nearly 15 years ago with today's affordable base prices. Sorry that you were disappointed & good luck finding another mass market not operating the same way as Princess. If I want the same experience as 15 years ago then I'll book a more upscale cruise line such as Oceania or Azamara. I cannot afford a luxury cruise such as Crystal but I still enjoy a Princess cruise by not having the same expectations as 15 years ago at today's affordable prices.
